I've been in here about two times now. Both times for fairly minor purchases. Both times, the staff were genuinely appreciative that I shopped there. The last time, in particular, the clerk stated that "after 70 years in business, you take nothing for granted" and offered his business card. The fact that the store has been there that long, in addition to surviving COVID and the encroachment of two big box sporting goods stores in the same city, says a lot. Bucksport is an institution in Humboldt County. From the large murals drawn outside to the slightly dark interior stocked with all sorts of anything you need to fish, shoot, hike and more. The folks here are incredibly friendly and knowledgeable. "What's the fishing like on the Mad River?" "Oh, I hear they are biting on salmon eggs near the mouth, but not so much near the hatchery. You might try the Eel river" Love this place. It was part of my growing up in Arcata. Now that I return annually with my son to fish, I have to stop by just to have my moment...and stock up on lures and get my fishing license renewed. And for the record, I am a soccer/fishing/hiking mom, who gets to return to her roots with her kids annually, and I feel totally welcome here. If I don't know I just ask and they are helpful. I'm from Chico ca, and came up here to fish with my buddy but his boat motor took a crap! I purchased $151 in gear then my buddy called me after I layed down all this mula!! I went back to the store with all the gear and the receipt and the awesome gentleman who helped me didn't even bat an eye in giving me my money back!! Because it would've added insult to injury if I got stuck with all this gear I can't use!! Got my money back and shook his hand and looked him in the(which is rare these days) and left the store! I've just gotten into Cowboy Action Shooting and Bucksport has been the only place in Humboldt county that can set a shooter up with traditional single-action firearms. I'm talking about having the guns in stock, hunting down the guns you are interested in, or sharing information that they get from trade shows, like the SHOT show that they just got back from in Las Vegas. They are always friendly, even to a guy like me that would keep bending their ears with question-upon-question about period reproductions. Here is one thing to to bear in mind, they don't sell junk. Bucksport has a store full of top quality sporting goods, not knock-offs. Give Bucksport a try. P.S. Only place in town I go for fishing gear and advice. These days it's hard to walk into an outdoor store and talk with people who are passionate about the sport (fishing, hunting) and passionate about the products. I often find myself going in there for some hooks and hanging out and telling hunting and fishing stories for half an hour. That's what it's all about! They reward their loyal customers and they know their stuff! Don't waste your time anywhere else. read more

The people here are friendly and helpful, even if you are just in an archery class and you're not out to hunt anything....yet! They have bait, abalone gear, and contests. Best local biz in town for fishing supplies and outdoor hunting supplies. A little pricy on fishing supplies but it is better than giving your money to Walmart I guess. read more

Bush league!!!... Try to spend some money at a local store.... The first day I try to use what I bought there the product obliterated... I bring it back in and I was told I must have put it on wrong.... How can u put two screws on wrong???... Then I leave my rifle there thinking they are doing me a solid only to come back and find out I was charged again for the same product I just bought 48 hours ago, also they charged me to install and bore sight it , so bill goes up!... I never even asked for anyone to do that, but yet I get charged.... they found a way to take more, best friend when trying to sale u something, after that u don't matter... so much for the local store.... But I guess it must have been my fault cause it's pretty hard to put 2 screws in... Even though I do it everyday for a living on a much larger scale... charged twice, and how can u charge for something that I never even asked for or mentioned?...bush league is all I have to say!!! We we're driving up to Oregon to do some Salmon fishing when I remembered we the line in our fishing reels were too light and should be respooled. So while driving through Eureka we found this shop and got everything we needed plus some great advice on what to use for landing some nice fish. Prices were fair and they respooled each reel for about $6 and did it quickly. read more

I live in Santa Cruz and visit Eureka 2 to 3 times a year. I don't leave town without visiting Bucksport. What a great store! In my area, I would have to visit 5 different stores to find what they have under one roof. Myself and family members have all been given a polite welcome when we walk in and great service. Having not purchased any firearms for about 20 years and being money ahead I wanted get a 3 1/2" semiauto duck/turkey/etc. shotgun, family business, long time business, Bucksport was my choice, after about 1/2 hour my choice was a Mossberg #935, at the register I told the young guy "you sure know your stuff" without missing a beat "ya, it's mostly bs". My confidence was dashed, 2 weeks pass, take the gun home,load, fire, NO ejection, pulled the ejector back and the shell jamed, had a hunting buddy try it out, same thing jamed spent shell held by the new shell going into load. Sent the 935 to Mossberg, Louise the teck at Mossberg called to say "it will be on your front porch Monday 2-13-2012 " what was the problem? Someone took out the spacer piston tube, wholesaler or dealer I asked, hard to say Louise said. After 45 minutes talking with him, I needed to call Bucksport about the defective gun, oh and also the 935 was shipped from Mossberg in 2007, durchased late 2011.Called around 10 A.M. " Greg Rice will get your message and will call back, the youngin I talked to was evasive, no call by 3 P.M. called again "Got you note right here you need to get off we only have one line. OOOOKKKKAAAAYYYY "You judge a man by how he treats thous that canot do anything for them, so mutch for man to man talking I guess spending $755.99 is not a big woop for them. I've done business with these guys several times, and I must say that they run a great store. They know the products they sell because they use them. I've bought dive gear and hunting gear from them, and they can answer any question you have. Now, I will admit it is possible to get some of the things they sell at other stores for a slightly lower price, but I choose to spend my money here because this is a solid and respectable local business. Very poor customer service! I called down and asked if they had a part for my benelli and was told "I don't know, I might have one in the back", I said well, can you go check?? He came back to the phone a few minutes later and said "Yeah, I got one". I was there within 10 minutes and the individual that I had talked to on the phone had already left and the next person could not find the part discussed. On a seperate occassion, my brother and I went in and asked to see some handguns when the guy behind the counter began using profanity like we were old friends off the block. Just not a place I care to re-visit. On the other hand, if your looking for great service "every" time, I would try Pacific Outfitters. aka/ Pro Sport Center.
