I've been talking about wanting a new bike so I can start to ride some distance for several years now. A friend of mine has started riding century rides and other craziness, so I thought I would ask for his advice on what to get. Since he lives up north, he got his bike from Buck's about 3 years ago, so while visiting, we decided to head up and take a look. I kind of knew what I was looking for because I have a friend who does exactly what I'm wanting to do. I knew I was looking for an entry-level carbon road bike, but I didn't want to pay an arm and a leg. I had no clue what size, so actually being about to touch and get on the bikes was definitely something I needed to do, and Buck's was the place to do it. I arrived on a Saturday about 40 minutes before closing. There were a number of other people in the store, so we started walking around and looking at the frames. We looked for about 20 minutes, got bikes off the racks, got on them, and had walked into another area of the store before anyone even acknowledged we were there. Granted, they were busy and it was almost closing time, but I would have liked some form of acknowledgement, especially as we started pulling bikes off the racks. By the time someone came up to us, I had pretty much made my mind up on what I wanted and that I would do some research on the bike before I purchased it. Had someone come up early on and spent some time with me, I might have walked out with a new bike yesterday. My friend needed a new tube for his bike, and since they were right next to the cashier, she was extremely helpful. The store is well laid out with a great selection - almost overwhelming to someone like me who really thought there was only one kind of bike until recently. In all fairness, I'll be back here because it's a local business, they have a great selection, and I've heard you can wheel and deal on older model stuff. I'm also certain that they were busier than normal because it was one of the first nice days out and everyone else was shopping for a bike, it was Saturday, and it was almost closing time. I waited almost 5 minutes for a staff member to approach me while I waited in the showroom. Staff had no knowledge of basic information about their bikes-- size of the bike frame and bike weight capacity. And they tried to talk me into buying a much more expensive electric bike when I specifically said I didn't want an ebike. Crummy customer service and bad business practices. read more

Hit or miss if you get good service. If you know what you want or don't need assistance, this is the place for you. But if you need help, good luck; you are mostly left on your own. I went in for chain lube and asked for a recommendation and the person pointed to the area it was displayed on....couldn't give me a specific recommendation based on my needs. I also went there shopping for a new bike with kind of an idea of what I wanted and was steered in the direction of bikes I definitely did not want (too big & heavy!). On the first time shopping for a new bike and not really knowing what I wanted...first no one even approached me to ask if they could help. I was taking bikes off display to try for size even. I think I could have walked out with one that day and no one would have noticed me. I shopped for shoes once and again was led to the area and then left to my own. I did purchase some woman's cycling shirts end of season and the salesperson made me a deal on the price. read more

Wow, I got a really nice bike for exactly my age and riding needs. I bought a Giant Cypress that is was assembled by Bucks as promised in just a couple of days. The sales staff member was super knowledgeable. I don't remember his name, but had a big beard and was pretty patient with me (That's saying something). Bucks did a nice job assembling the bike. This bike has an actual seat on it that is comfortable and actually has a shock underneath. This seat is no 2" wide seat you commonly see on today's bikes, butt (pun intended) padded and wide. The front forks both have shocks and the tires are amazing. The gears shift easily and smoothly up and down. The seat, and both tires have quick release hubs. No screwing around with a ratchet set to adjust your seat or change a tire if needed. The frame is aluminum and is very light. Okay, another cool thing: the hand grips. They extend out toward the rider to allow you to rest on hands instead of just something used to hang-on for dear life. I had not ridden a bike in about 10 years, but this one lit me up. Okay, here's my profile: Age: 58 - My wife keeps telling me "2." Maybe I should have gone with the trike. Build: Square. I am about as tall as I am wide. My feet are flat too. Athleticism: Nothing left really in the gas tank anymore, which is why having this bike do all the work is great. Cost: This bike set me back about $540 bones during the pandemic including tax. I am handicapped and have a special attachment to my wheelchair. The attachment had a flat tire. I brought in the flat and was told that it would be ready the next day and would get a phone call when it was ready. To my surprise, I got a phone call telling me that the flat and a few adjustments were complete. The owner and his staff rushed the task since it was a wheelchair attachment. I want to thank Buck's crew for going above and beyond what was asked of them. I feel humbled, I did not ask nor assume any special treatment from Buck's. I tried to support local business but the service that was paid for was not completed and then Roger wanted to make excuses and argue instead of correcting the situation... I paid $220 to have them service the bikes and add a couple of accessories but when we picked them up, the bikes had not been cleaned and specific repairs had not been completed as asked. I give Buck's the "extra star" only because it is a clean, organized store and most of the staff are very kind and helpful, but their bicycle tune up is a sham. It took two trips to the shop to get them to complete part of it and we still did not receive the service that was advertised to us when we dropped them off, and for $80 each for a tune up this was unacceptable. I would gladly pay this to help support a local business if they completed the work that was suppose to have been done. we could have been customers for a long time but will never go back now. I would not recommend supporting this business because there are too many small local shops out there that would treat their customers with the respect that they deserve and paid for........ read more

This is not for your average mid class shopper. I brought my bike in for repair. In between the laughs, I was told it's not worth fixing but we can sell you a new one for a larger chunk of cash instead. Unless you have no concerns monetary,I recommend trying somewhere else. read more

By all appearances, this is a large shop with plenty of parking off a very busy street. The showroom is full of new bicycles and equipment neatly displayed. However, on this day I came in to price replacement tires and tubes for my 35 year old Trek touring bike. The woman I spoke with greeted me and asked if she could help. Her knowledge of the products was rather limited as she constantly deferred to one of the mechanics in the back of the shop for the products I was interested in. The tubes were kept on a shelf on the sales floor, but the tires were stored on the back wall of the shop, affording me little opportunity to see the different types available. At this point, I expected a mechanic to come out and speak with me, but he simply could not be pulled away from the rock music playing on the radio. I'm giving Buck's Bicycle Shop 3 stars because they clearly have a nice display of merchandise. Unfortunately, they do not know how to "work an up." This was an opportunity for them to learn more about me as a customer, my needs, and how they can be of service both now and in the long run. The salesperson I spoke with didn't seem to be interested in being there at all, and the mechanics wouldn't speak with me. I expected more from my first experience with this shop. It's really a shame. In an industry that is in constant competition with online retailers, customer service is the final frontier in determining whether a customer walks into a shop, or orders from a faceless online source. read more

I went in 3 days ago to look at the bikes. Joshua was very helpful and spent at least an hour w/me, answering my questions and explaining why he thought the bikes he showed me would be a good fit. I couldn't decide between two, so I got his card w/the bike info on it. I went back today. Joshua was helping someone else, so Jeffery helped me. I told him which bike I wanted. He checked in back and they had it, but it was I assembled. He asked when I wanted it. Today? I told him that would be ideal, but I would understand if it would be a couple of days. He said that if I didn't mind waiting, he would do it now. Wow! Really?!? It took about 45 minutes, which kept him past when the store closed. I've been coming there for over 10 years. Yes, they are more expensive than buying your bike at Walmart, but you get what you pay for. I bought a Trek mountain bike 1st, but didn't use it often...needed a road bike. They traded it in for me, and the saleperson directed me to a very nice comfort bike for road trail riding. I was amazed that they bought my old bike back for $250, as I had paid only $350 for it 4 years previous! I get my bikes tune-uped every two years...yes, you do have to drop it off, and it's usually done in a few days. Trick is to do that in March or April, as they get real busy in summer months. They're suggestions for everything from seats to cycle computers have been great. Oh...I really like seeing the old Schwinn bikes they have dispayed on the walls...so cool seeing those!!! read more

I visited Bucks on the 25th of November 2014 in the mid-afternoon. Overall I was very impressed with the shop, so much so that I'm bothering to review it. So here are some things to note: Environment: The store is spacious and clean. I did not feel cramped nor did I feel pressured by large advertisements. Overall, the layout is effective. People: The gentleman who helped me today was fantastic, he was attentive, knowledgeable and helpful. I spoke with two employees today, both of whom went well above and beyond. Value: Bucks is not amazon.com. However, everything I have purchased from Bucks over the last year has lasted and is still in good working condition. In my opinion, Bucks trumps every other Valparaiso bike shop. If you haven't been here, you must go here and experience it for yourself. I will use Bucks as long as I am in Valparaiso. read more

This review is for Bike servicing only. My road bike was skipping gears and had not been serviced in a few years so in for a tuneup it went. I was thinking I might need a new bike but it now rides like new again so will hold off on a new one for a while. Employees were also friendly, knowledgeable, and professional. read more

At least it's something, but definitely not the bike shop I want. Staff are generally pretty unhelpful, pushy, and uneducated. You don't get the feeling that they want to help you, only to make money off of you. Prices are always high here, even for bike shops. But if you live in valpo, this is the best we've got, so I do end up going for small equipment I need. Also, it's not in a very bike-friendly location. Almost everyone has to drive in instead of biking there. read more

Terrible customer service. I was looking at a Trek bicycle when an employee turned out the lights and said they were closing in minutes and I would have to come back later. My husband called a few days later for them to fix a bike computer they installed incorrectly. We were informed they were not sure when they could find the time time to correct the problem. read more

Very helpful and service-oriented staff. They don't take their customers for granted. I was in the store recently and had a tire pump that wasn't working that well. It had been purchased over a year ago and I didn't have a receipt. They gave me a brand new pump without any hesitation. They made my day! read more

If I could give Bucks Bicycle Shop a 0 star, I would. Horrible customer service. They do not treat you as fellow cyclists. They will not give you any advice, tips, or anything. All they want is your money. On multiple occasions, I have gone to them to seek help in servicing my bike(in which I would still pay them their outrageous costs) and instead of helping me, they say... "just go on the internet and search for videos on youtube". The employees are just not willing to help you in your best interest. And to top it off, when I ask to speak to the owner about these issues.... "the owner tells the employee" that he is just too busy to spare a few minutes in talking to me. To summarize all this up, I would rather drive 30mins to the michigan city or the chesterton bike shop then to go to the local bucks. read more

this is a great local business.my wife and kids decided to get me a bicycle for my 54th birthday.I had a mountain bike that was hurting my back.I wanted to get a comfort bike.went to Walmart and the other department stores and looked at their bikes total junk.all cheap bikes assembled poorly.went to bucks and talked to Joshua.he showed me the electra townie bike with pedal forward technology.took it for a test drive and it was wonderful.Joshua made me a great deal for the tall frame Townie that fit me perfectly.I have now had six months and my back feels great ride it everyday.took my wife's bike in and had new tires fenders and a basket put on it good price good service I love this place.if you're an old man with a bad back get a townie!!! and buy it it bucks read more
