If you are vising Chicago, this is one of the not to be missed iconic landmarks. The Buckingham Fountain is managed by the Chicago Park District is one of largest fountains in the world. It features impressive water displays and stunning architecture in the beautiful setting of Grant Park. The Buckingham Fountain was built at a cost of $750,00 and it was dedicated on August 12, 1927. Philanthropist Kate Buckingham donated the funds for the fountain as a tribute to her brother, Clarence who was an art collector of Japanese prints. Kate collected medieval sculpture, tapestries, and decorative arts. In addition to the Clarence Buckingham Memorial Fountain she also donated a statue honoring Alexander Hamilton in Lincoln Park and her family's art collection to the Art Institute of Chicago. Clarence Buckingham had been a governing member and a trustee of the Art Institute and Kate was influenced by his association with the institution. The Buckingham Fountain was designed by architect Edward H. Bennett in a classic Art Deco style out of pink marble. The sculptural elements were created by French artist Marcel Loyau. The fountain resembles a rococo style wedding cake and was inspired by the Bassin de Latone and modeled on the Latona Fountain at the Palace of Versailles in France. The fountain symbolizes the vastness of Lake Michigan, with four groups of bronze seahorses representing the four states bordering the lake: Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan. The fountain is able to propel 14,000 gallons of water per minute. At night the fountain comes alive with lights and dancing water jets. The fountain is known for being featured in the opening of the television show, Married with Children. The Buckingham Fountain stands as a symbol of Kate Buckingham's philanthropic generosity and her love for her brother and the City of Chicago. Stopped by Buckingham Fountain in Grant Park after seeing The Bean and Crown Fountain. The scale of it is impressive, with the water shooting high into the air and the city skyline as a backdrop. On a clear day it's a great place to sit for a bit, take photos, and enjoy the view. The fountain runs on a schedule, so catching the larger water displays adds to the experience. It's also lit up at night from what I heard, which makes it worth seeing more than once. Bathrooms are also available on site. A classic Chicago landmark that's easy to fit into a walk through the park.
Wow - amazing fountain - I think more amazing that it fits right into the surroundings of the Chicago skyline - like it's so belongs here! All I gotta say is you gotta see it to really enjoy it. It was donated by Kate Buckingham, who the fountain is named after of course. Is in the shape of a wedding cake spouting and cascading waters all about. Per Wikipedia one of the largest fountains in the world so wiki can be wrong but it's a damn big big fountain in a darn big big big city.
Buckingham Fountain is absolutely stunning and a must-see in Chicago. The size, but unfortunately it was closed and empty for cleaning. Nonetheless the skyline backdrop make it the perfect photo spot. Whether you visit during the day or catch it lit up at night, it's a beautiful and iconic experience.
It's a fountain! This reminds me of the grandiose fountain in Philly. I love it! The only difference is the lack of shade and park area. It sits right next to Grant/Millennium Park but it's well away from any trees. The fountain in Philly seems like it was built with every intention of constructing a park around it and having it hug the fountain. This place could be that but it's just wide open and sun baked. There are a few tree areas close by but you might as well be elsewhere because they don't make you feel like you're visiting the fountain. I was actually surprised by how empty it was around the fountain. It was in the mid-60s to mid-70s while we were in Chicago. It was perfect weather to be hanging out at the fountain but with little shade. Since this is further south in the park, I feel like it might not get noticed as much as Cloud Gate and things on the north side. Even without the shade, this is absolutely a spot worth trekking to.
Finally rolled through Chicago when the fountain was on and it did not disappoint. Shooting high in the sky and spraying people down on a hot Chicago day. I think this fountain was worth the wait. Yeah, I grew up watching Married With Children so there was a certain nostalgia that came with the visit but that is fine by me! Reminded me of that episode where Kelly was on the trivia show but her brain was full and every nonsensical thing she learned pushed on eof the trivia answers out of her brain. What an episode!
I really wanted to see the "Married with Children" Fountain so I made my way down here. I paid for parking at the Millennium Garage and walked a couple blocks down here to see the fountain in action......or so I thought. I got there and see a sign that says it doesn't open until next weekend (May 10th, 2025). Lame! I was a week early. Still cool to see though, and the park its in would be an awesome place to hang out and walk in if it wasn't so cold outside.
Super gorgeous fountain! We caught it at the perfect time when the spray was extremely high! The area around is large and spacious. This is the perfect place to walk! Just past the fountain you can take a water taxi ride back to your desired destination.
Popularized back in the late 80's to mid-90s in the opening sequence of the "Married with Children" TV show, Buckingham Fountain has been a historical landmark in Chicago since philanthropist Kate S. Buckingham donated it back in 1927. Almost in the center of Grant Park, it is worth a visit to observe as the mechanical jets manipulate the water into all manner of ariel acrobatics, with some water streams shooting water up to 150 feet into the air. There are benches lining the perimeter of the fountain to appreciate the spectacle; which also provides a nice respite from the hours of walking which tourists usually engage when in Chicago. We weren't able to return in the evening when decorative lights accompany the water show, but it was still lovely to visit during the daytime. So do as visitors and locals do and stop by, snap a few pics and then upload to your social media platform of choice.
I just love coming here when I'm in the Chicago area. It's been awhile but it's always awesome. Beautiful area for pictures. They were getting ready for the lollapalooza weekend so it was a busy area. I recommend visiting this area, there is plenty to do and see. Many shops, bars and restaurants nearby.
This historic fountain is located in Grant Park. It is eye catching an is located in a huge plaza area with benches around the perimeter to sit. It is a very busy, but relaxing spot, as you listen to the flow of the fountain's water. You may recognize this fountain from the opening of the show Married with Children or in the movie The Break-up. The fountain was dedicated in 1927 and added to the the National Register of Historic Places in July 1993. It was donated to the city by philanthropist Kate Buckingham, who named the fountain after her late brother Clearance. The fountain is billed as one of the largest fountains in the world. The fountain is constructed of Georgia pink marble and contains 1.5 million gallons of water. The fountain consists of 3 basins with the bottom pool of the fountain being 280 feet in diameter. Additionally, the fountain has 134 jets that are powered by 3 pumps. Luckily, I was able to catch the fountain operating during its final week of the season. The fountain operates from 8AM to 11PM daily, normally from early May through mid-October, depending on weather. It's operation was extended to the end of October this year due to the late warm weather they were experiencing. The fountain has an amazing water show which occurs every hour on the hour and last approximately 20 minutes, where the fountain's center jet shoots up vertically to about 150 feet. I was staying at a hotel nearby and the water show is what caught my eye and brought me in. This is a must see attraction if you are in downtown Chicago. You can pair it with a visit to historic Grant Park, where it is centrally located and make a trip of it.
An iconic Chicago landmark! The nicely manicured garden and grounds with Chicago skylines in the background for the majestic fountain is such a great spot to take in the view. We made a point to visit Buckingham Fountain again on this trip as well and it's just as impressive as I remembered. read more

This was my favorite part of visiting Chicago for the first time. It was such a BEAUTIFUL fountain and I love how much open space there is around it! Super cool for photos and even photoshoots! We luckily found parking on the street up front, otherwise I'm not sure where to park. The fountain is HUGE. Bigger than any I've seen and it was so nice and clean around it. This city in general is super clean and nice compared to LA. The surrounding view of the cityscape and old school hotels were incredible. This is one of the attractions in Chicago you should visit. I always forget how massive this fountain actually is along with the open space surrounding it. A great location for some photography especially with the skyline in the back west of the fountain or the open sky to the east towards Lake Michigan. Even if water fountains aren't your thing there's a lot to see over in Grant Park and nearby Millennium park to walk around and check out as well. read more
One of the largest fountains in the world (Built-in 1927 as a donation from the family), the feature boasts 133 jets that shoot water as high as 150 feet into the air during 20-minute choreographed displays (take place every hour between 8 AM and 11 PM). The last display of the evening starts at 10:35 PM. After dusk, the water show is accompanied by lights, a must-see if you are in the neighborhood in the evening. The fountain is the central focal point of Grant Park, Chicago's expansive public space with many attractions and smaller parks like Millennium Park, comparable to Central Park. Extra point for - the view from this place... one side, Chicago skyline, another side, the path to Michigan River.... so location wise- its top place. and From Skydeck Chicago- you can understand how strategically this fountain is placed. read more
"Love and marriage, love and marriage, go together like a horse and carriage" Ok, sorry, but the show Married with Children was my first introduction to Buckingham Fountain as a kid, and the intro song was going through my head the entire time I was visiting the fountain! Buckingham Fountain has also been featured in tons of movies that are set in Chicago, like Ferris Bueller's Day Off, The Fugitive, Blues Brothers, and a ton more. If you're a fan of movies or tv, you've definitely seen it several times. But no amount of seeing Buckingham Fountain on screen can compare to seeing it in person. It's a behemoth spurting tons of water in gorgeous choreographed patterns. During its daily show, it spits out over a million gallons of water 150 feet in the air, so you definitely want to check that out. After you've seen the fountain, explore more of Grant Park where it's located, because there's a ton to do and see there too! A fun, free day you can spend in Chicago seeing some monuments and nature all in one. read more

Review Visit: June 23rd, 2012 "Love and Marriage, Love and Marriage, go together like a horse and carriage, this I tell ya brother, you can't have one without the other..." If you have ever watched the classic show Married with Children, then you have seen Buckingham Fountain. The iconic fountain in the opening credits is located in Chicago, IL and it is quite easily accessible via the park there. Besides that, not much to say about it. It is a giant fountain in the middle of the park. I went during the day, so maybe they have some cool light shows at night? The area is nice and it was really cool to see an iconic landmark from a TV show in person. read more

I've been to Chicago several times, but always in the fall, so the fountain has always been turned off. I had high hopes going here, but it didn't rate five stars. The fountain is open 8 AM to 11 PM, May through October. There is supposed to be a nighttime light and music show, but the night I went, it was just the regular lights. It's supposed to be every hour on the hour, so I waited quite some time to no avail. It wasn't five stars for me for the following reasons: no light and music show as promised, no benches or seating (maybe it was moved for lollapalooza, but doubtful), and there were tons of those annoying cycle rickshaws wrapped in neon lights. They just kept circling around the fountain blasting Miley Cyrus. This is a neat display, and is one of the largest fountains in the world, so it's worth a visit, but the city could make it more hospitable to visitors with some seating and actually stick to the show schedule. read more

Buckingham Fountain is one of those quintessential Chicago images that you'll see in stock footage, on shows and films, and lots of people want their photo here (lots of wedding photos are taken here). This landmark is near the Queen's Landing, so named because on Queen Elizabeth's visit to Chicago, she alighted on the "pier" (concrete slab, really) across Lake Shore Drive. It is simply by happenstance that this fountain is called Buckingham Fountain, but I suspect it may have been part of the plan for the QEII to make her arrival here because of it. The fountain's namesake is Clarence Buckingham, and the fountain was denoted by his sister. Some call it "Chicago's Front Door" because of its location in Grant Park. Clarence Buckingham was a trustee at the Art Institute of Chicago, an association which was appreciated by his sister; thus she donated several things to the city and AIC, including this memorial fountain. She established an endowment as well for its maintenance at the time of its dedication in 1927. And since then it has been one of the most beloved and most visited places in the city. It is amongst the largest fountains in the world and was modeled on another at Versailles (and is actually twice the size of that fountain). Up to 15,000 gallons per minute cycle through. At night, lights and music provide accompaniment. The fountain also boats four sea horse sculptures in Art Deco style that represent each state that borders Lake Michigan. The plaza surrounding the fountain was once crushed stone. However, renovations in recent years have replaced that with pavers in order to make it accessible. There are washrooms just north of the fountain in the plaza. You'll also find lots of rickshaws around offering you a ride if you need one. There's parking along Columbus, and of course the CTA is nearby as well. The fountain operates from May to October, but you can of course admire the beautiful architecture even when the fountain is off. read more

Can't say that the fountain is a must see but most people will recognize this fountain because of little show called Married with Children, I mean only reason we came to check it out since watching the show on Netflix. what more can be said? not much really It is a beautiful big fountain you get a nice kick while checking it out. read more

An enormous fountain that has been in Grant Park since the early 1900s. Its construction was funded by art collector and philanthropist Kate Sturges Buckingham and its design was inspired by the Latona Basin at the Palace of Versailles in France. The fountain can hold up to 1.5 million gallons of water and uses up to 15,000 gallons of recirculated water per minute. It has a total of 133 water jets with one used to create a 150-ft tall central geyser. It's such a gorgeous fountain! Plentiful benches surrounding it so you can relax with this nice view. Not crowded here as the majority of Grant Park visitors tend to go and stay at Cloud Gate. I mean, I like "the bean" too but it seems like the fountain is overlooked by it. Definitely check out Buckingham Fountain as well if you plan to visit Cloud Gate (about a 15 min walk)! *Take note that the fountain typically operates from May to October read more

(I've always loved that show! lol) We walked over to Grant Park after enjoying our "Breakfast of Champions" (Deep dish pizza #2) at Lou Malnati's around the block. You will find the Fountain right in the middle of the park. I could hear the water flowing long before I actually laid eyes on it. It was a clear and sunny Wednesday afternoon when we stopped by and checked it out. It wasn't very busy, so it was quite nice to just take it all in without having a huge crowd around. You can really get some great pics here of the Fountain with that beautiful Chicago skyline in the background! I didn't get a chance to see the light show, but I am still glad I got to stop by and see this landmark. 5 stars. read more
I was born and raised in and around the Chicago area. I spent the first 30 years of my life in this area. I have been to see the Buckingham fountain numerous times and have always marveled at it's beauty! It is more then an attraction, more then beautiful... it is a work of art that is a part of one of the best cities in the world! 1 The Buckingham Fountain is one of the world's largest. 2 It is not named after Buckingham Palace. The fountain's benefactor, Kate Buckingham, dedicated it on May 26, 1927 as a memorial for her late brother, Clarence. 3 The fountain and its beautiful four sea horses, built by Marcel Loyau, are meant to represent Lake Michigan. Each of the sea horses represents the four states that border the lake: Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Wisconsin. 4 The fountain is constructed out of Georgia pink marble. 5 Buckingham fountain appeared in the opening credits of Married... With Children, and was the starting line for the 6th season of The Amazing Race. 6 The fountain is powered by 3 pumps that push 14,100 gallons of water per minute through 134 water jets. 7 The fountain holds 1.5 million gallons of water. The base of Buckingham Fountain is 280 feet in diameter. 8 The fountain is complete controlled by a "Honeywell Excel-Plus" computer located underground in the fountain's pump house. Until the 1994 renovation, the computer was located in Atlanta, Georgia. 9 Buckingham Fountain is actually equipped with a security alarm, which is monitored by a security company in Chicago's Northwest suburbs. I was looking out the window of my hotel room when I noticed Buckingham Fountain to my left; I thought to myself "wow, that's a really big fountain". Since I had the afternoon free, I decided to make my way across to the park, do some exploring, and check out this fountain up close. Located in the center of Grant Park, I decided to do a little reading up and learned that Buckingham Fountain is one of the largest fountains in the world. After seeing it up close, I totally believe that. The fountain is huge - it almost has a wedding cake design in the center with water spouting up reallllly high (it looked extremely high from my hotel room so you can only imagine). The pool that surrounds the main fountain structure is vast, and contains these seahorse-like sculptures that spew out even more water. The fountain sits in the middle of a huge open area, so there is plenty of room to walk around without being on top of other people. I didn't realize until after the fact that the opening title card to Married With Children has Buckingham Fountain in it, but hey, that's cool! MWC isn't one of my go-to 80s/90s sitcoms, but if you need me to spot out The Rusty Anchor then I'm your man ;-). It's definitely worth a stop here during your Chicago explorations. read more
My wife and I walked around this lovely city of Chicago at 78 degree weather. She was wonderful enough to allow Me to act like a tourist and take me to all the important "traps" that is a must see for anyone who does visit the Windy City. Granted we aren't done, but we l accomplished quite a bit. This phenomenon was a wonderful display of aquatics with an interesting history of being gifted from England. It's a must see.
