Being anal retentive, I have a tendency to follow some rigid patterns of behavior. For instance-- when I eat out by myself, I'll eat Italian on 1 occasion, Asian on the next, and deli food on the 3rd. Rinse and repeat. Italian, Asian, Deli, Italian, Asian, Deli...etc. etc. etc. When it comes to Asian, I like Szechuan Royale in the Hastings Square Plaza and usually try to coordinate things so that when I'm in Hackettstown by myself, it's "Asian week." This past week, though, it was "Italian week," and I thought maybe I should give Bruno's a try, especially since it's directly next door to Szechuan Royale. I had done my semi-regular "long walk" (not to be confused with Mao's "long march") in nearby Union Cemetery and was heading home. I figured it was a perfect occasion to give Bruno's a shot. Evidently, it's a family-run operation. The man in the back kitchen area (father?) does the cooking, the woman (wife?) assists, and the young man (son?) helps out front. More than 1 Yelp reviewer has described the owners as being 'friendly" or "incredibly friendly." I didn't get that vibe, but then again, I'm not quite as neurotic and obsessive about restaurant owners as I am about cashiers in a supermarket, cashiers in 7-11's, etc. If the food is good, if the prices are fair and the service proficient, I don't particularly care if the restaurant personnel are cheery, or friendly, or smiling, or chatty. Why is that? Why 1 standard for cashiers in a supermarket, and another for restaurant personnel? Probably for the same reason I love chocolate candy but dislike chocolate ice cream. In other words--- who knows? Who cares? Probably not anyone who has read the review so far. Anyway... The young man assisting me up front gave new meaning to the word "laid-back," but he took my take-out order in an efficient enough manner and told me it would be about 10-15 minutes. I went back to my car to wait, and to fiddle around on my phone with Ebay, Amazon, Facebook, and...of course!...Yelp. In 10-15 minutes, I went back inside and the take-out food I had ordered-- lasagna, pasta fagioli soup, salad, and bread-- was ready to go. It usually takes me about a half hour to get back to Basking Ridge, but there were a few detours on the way, and I wondered how the food was going to hold up. I worried that it would be cold, or at least only lukewarm. As it turned out-- everything went pretty well. The lasagna, in fact, was still warm, and actually turned out to be very good! As good as my late WASP mother made? No, but then I don't know that I've ever tasted lasagna that could equal Mom's (or at least equal my childhood/youthful memory of it). Also very good was the still-warm pasta fagioli soup, which was chock full of pasta, beans and flavor. There were 2 pieces of fresh bread provided, not just 1, as is usually the case. The salad wasn't particularly awe-inspiring, but then...for me...salads never are. All in all, it was a more than decent meal, and I thought the prices were reasonable. I didn't find the service "incredibly friendly," but it was efficiently competent and straight-forward (and I'm there, after all, to order food, not make "new friends"), and I was very satisfied with the food. I only wish they had provided me with more lasagna, but then that's probably just my latent gluttony making itself manifest. I don't know what the sit-down dining experience here is like, but I'm willing to give it a try, based on my 1 experience with take-out. Recommended. read more

Delicious cheese pizza just for me (IYKYK) or maybe a few others too! This small whole in the wall has really good pizza with fresh and high quality ingredients. service was very friendly and the zeppoles were tasty. We really liked the zeppoles weren't very greasy or deep fried and had enough but not too much powdered sugar on them. Prides and very reasonable as well. Worth a try if you live in the area or need something good passing through town. read more

Here's the deal: only visit here was to quickly grab a slice while in the neighborhood. Bruno's located in small strip of stores off Schooly Mt Road. Upon entering the place it was clean & vibrant . They even had a small section to grab coffee & 2 lounge chairs pointed at the TV so you can sit & sip coffee or wait for your order. The man (assuming Bruno) was friendly. Even asked how I wanted my slices reheated! From the eye test this small business is well run. The 2 slices & water/ soda $6.00 was very good. Crust had great texture and the cheese wasn't that waxy cheaper variety that sometimes is used. Love supporting small businesses!! I'd definitely order from there again or dine at one of their 6-7 tables . I'll bet their dishes are pretty good! read more

Ordered an eggplant parm sandwich for pick up. This is the second time that the bread was burnt on bottom & sides! Ruined the sandwich. Also, not enough eggplant or sauce - very dry. This place is a true gem!! The owners are from Italy and the food is superb but reasonably priced. We had the chicken parm and veal parm dinners- just delish!! The portions are large as well. We were able to sit outside on their veranda and enjoy the beautiful weather! Totally recommend this restaurant! read more

Warm Cardboard - Pepperoni Pizza Let me start off by saying that it's not my desire to destroy businesses through poor reviews. However, I do believe in keeping them honest. If you don't tell a business what they're doing wrong, they won't know to fix it. I don't go out often because I'm often disappointed. I can make crappy food all on my own. (I'm a decent cook actually and cook often.) Wanted to try a new pizza spot as I hadn't ordered out pizza for probably well over a year. I think most of the pizza joints in Hackettstown are fairly terrible. I make pizza every Friday and take it seriously, so I know pizza. You can think what you want in terms of the quality of my personal pizza, but it's a solid. Just wanted a change the other night. I'd give this place a 0 if I could. Had to be one of the worst pies I've ever eaten. Easily top 10. I'm always hesitant ordering a plain pizza or something simple like pepperoni because I have this fear that they could easily just reheat a plain pie, slap some simple ingredients on it if need be, and call it done. (Had it happen one time that I actually know of.) Not sure if that's what happened here, but that would be a much better excuse for this hot cardboard garbage. I got there and opened the box before paying just to ya know, check it out. There was ricotta cheese in several spots. I don't care if you like ricotta cheese or not, the order was for a pepperoni pizza - not a pepperoni pizza sprinkled with ricotta. I questioned it and the woman there told me it probably came from the pizza cutter. Um. Okay. I brushed it off and let it go deciding it wasn't worth my time. I was wrong. I should have abandoned ship there. I don't care WHERE it came from. How is that my problem? And why should I accept that? Answer: I shouldn't. You shouldn't. Got home with it. (I'm 5 mins away.) It was warm at best. It was burnt and overcooked. I could barely chew through the crust (I'm not just talking about the end crust. I'm talking about the crust of the entire slice.) There was no bend whatsoever. Those slices stuck out and hung there like hard cardboard, and that's exactly what they tasted like. The only flavor came from the subpar pepperoni. I should have taken it back. It was that bad. Unfortunately, I suffered through it out of the inconvenience of going back. Don't do what I did. Take it back or at the very least, call them. I ate the other 4 slices the following night cold. That was the only way to get through them. Couldn't eat the crust because it was rock solid. Should have thrown it out. So many people are content just eating garbage because I think they're just used to it. They've never experienced great food, so they're happy with crap. I'm not. Learn to cook, people. Restaurants are getting worse and worse. They don't care because people continue to eat their garbage and never say anything. Fantastic food, fantastic service, great prices! Got lasagna to-go, it was packed with care, to insure it would travel well. Everything was delicious. The only thing as charming as the hosts (owners, I assume?) was the home made Tiramisu. :) I look forward to returning often! The girlfriend and I stopped in tonight to get a bite to eat. Staff was super friendly when they greeted us. Literally everyone said hello! I ordered the cheese steak and she ordered an Italian sub and a side of cheese fries. Everything was amazing! Simply the best meal I've had in a long time. Cheesesteak was delicious and super tender. Fries were cooked perfectly and salted! She absolutely loved her sandwich. They even gave us two Zeppoli's stuffed with Nutella on the house. I haven't been to this place since it opened. We just finished playing airsoft at Stryker Airsoft and came across this lovely family true Italian restaurant. Initially, we were just going to grab a slice to takeout but the inside is clean and cute, so we decided to sit in and eat. Owners were friendly and staff was welcoming. The lady owner suggested their home made lasagne. It was delicious with a small little 'kick' of spice. Minced meat was soft and tasty. I think it was a combination of beef and veal. I've only had Bruno's pizza so far. The pizza is now my new favorite in town. It always taste fresh and the dough has a nice taste. The plain pizza is my favorite followed by their white pie and pepperoni. I don't usually like white pie but there's has great flavor and the right amount of ricotta; is very good. The staff is very friendly and have smiles on which is always nice. This pizzeria is a nice new addition to Hackettstown and definitely worth giving a try!!! Fairly new transplant and knew that feeding my Jersey born and bred boyfriend dominos was a warcrime. This pizza was on point. Huge, delicious, perfect thin crust, decent price and for the delivery, yesterday it was raining like "build an ark". This poor kid comes up to my door, rivers of rain running down his face, and is profusely apologizing that my pizza *may* have gotten wet (it didn't). Gave one star because zero isn't an option. Ordered two pizzas was told 30 to 35 minutes an hour later I call to find out where our food is and she says they didn't deliver it because we called from a cell number with a PA area code even though we gave her a Hackettstown address. She said she called the number back and the person who answered said they didn't order (our cell phone never rang so she obviously dialed a wrong number) she asked me if I still wanted our order to which I said yes (thinking mistakes happen) she told me they sold a few of the slices out of one of the pies. I assumed the point of her telling me that was to let me know they would have to remake them. A short while later when they arrived I found that they had thrown some fresh cheese on top of the pizzas and cooked them again. They threw in the slices they sold by topping some plain slices and reheating them as well. The treq in a tiramasu as a consolation for reheated pizzas when they should have remade them. The crusts were hard as a rock and the pizza wasn't worth anything close to the cost. We are new to town and never again will we order from here. I could have overlooked the delivery mistake but the reheated and pieced together piece was really bad service. read more
