Let me tell you what. I was afraid to go to the dentist as a young adult, but I started going to Dr. Duchan back in 2001 and have been with him ever since. He is super attentive and you would be hard pressed to find a dentist who cares more. Dr. Duchan is a perfectionist and he dedicates his time to each of his patients. I have never felt rushed and he understands that dental care is of the utmost importance. Case and point, I had a dental emergency on Labor Day of 2018. He did not bat an eye. He saw me on Labor Day. I started seeing Dr. DUCHAN 2 YEARS AGO. I had not seen a Dentist in about two years because I was dissatisfied with the work of my last two Dentists. I felt that they were making things worse. Within a few visits over the next year Dr. Duchan meticulously repaired my problems and corrected the past work. My ability to chew food was greatly improved and no longer painful! Dr. Duchan is the first dentist I've chosen solely based off of Yelp reviews, and I'm so glad that I was able to find him. You can tell that Dr. Duchan loves what he does, cares about his patients, likes being a part of the community, and keeps up on the best dental practices from his charmingly retro office. He is always kind on the phone and in person, and remembers when I prefer to come in for appointments. When I've had problems with teeth breaking or crowns popping off, he makes sure I can get in to see him quickly, even if it means he stays at the office beyond 6pm. He is fun to talk to, and we usually talk about technology, travel, and funny stories about his patients. He doesn't do root canals, but I like the endodontist that he recommended to me. I docked a star because his office feels a little too outdated, and sometimes he seems to have problems with his machine for spraying air and water. He is also so incredibly detailed that it often makes my visits very lengthy. I've been in his chair for 2-3 hours several times for work on just one tooth. He's willing to get me in for any little complaint, but sometimes I feel like I'm having to come in too many times for a single tooth (says the girl with a very complex dental history). Also, I wonder if it's just back luck, but the last few times he's sent out work to his dental lab for crowns, they've had to be redone. That means an additional visit and 2 week wait to have my permanent crown. That being said, he is a perfectionist, and won't cement a poorly made tooth in your mouth. Doctor Duchan runs a no-frills practice in Royal Oak just down the road from the sweet factory at Pronto and Oakland Community College. You could drive by and miss the modest one storey building, unless searching for parking during one of the many festivals. But inside hides one of the nicest dentists I've met, and the sort of practice that brings in all members of the family. Doctor Duchan is a friendly, sweet-tempered man who comes out to shake your hand, to ask how you are doing, and to put you at ease. His attentiveness beats the brusque dentists who show up long enough to shove a drill in your mouth and mutter cryptic dental slang over the whir and squeal of machines. Never rushed in bearing and always ready to dispense a smile or helpful information, he personifies a style of dentistry that puts focus on the patient's needs. I imagine he's great with kids. I came for a check up and a periodic cleaning on my last visit, and expressed concerns about sweet/cold sensitivity in a filled molar. The x-rays and cleaning passed like a charm, all the while Doctor Duchan explaining some of the processes and options permitted by my insurance, possibilities for the tooth sensitivity, and a run down of good hygiene he'd like a young woman of my age to focus on. I had no idea, for instance, that I would be entitled to more frequent visits during pregnancy and post-labour. Not that I intend to be in the motherly way any time soon, but this is a useful tidbit probably buried in nine menus of legalese on my insurance provider's website. He's also a funny man, which sure helps when the drills come out. I'm nonplussed about dental work, but I sure like someone who can smile and tell good stories to help the time pass. He's got a light touch and his hygienist (whose name I cannot recall, but she was returning to school soon) was quick with the suction tube and a total sweetheart. What more can you ask for in a dentist? Best still, Doctor Duchan does much of his own paperwork and follow-up. He answers his own phones, leaves personal messages, and answers questions rather than letting an admin or hygienist field all the details when sometimes you need pertinent advice. Not that the staff isn't helpful -- they are an equally lovely bunch with the same down to earth, lovely Midwestern personalities I've come to appreciate so much. They help keep things running smoothly. He sent me off with a bag full of travel-sized toothpastes and was utterly apologetic for running out of floss, so I got several of those mini-flossers which are perfect to stash in a purse. My postcard reminding me to go for another checkup showed up a bit ago and when I had to miss an appointment due to an emergency work meeting, Doctor Duchan was totally understanding and great about letting me cancel without a penalty. Fine office, fabulous people. It may not be sleek and swanky with chrome and Apple-like white glass everywhere, but it doesn't need to be when you get quality health care at an affordable price, with a staff who knows what they are doing. Dr. Duchan is like your favorite uncle, if you have an uncle that likes to operate power tools in your mouth. So I broke off a part of a molar on a granola bar (yeah, so that happened...), and had gone to University of Michigan Dental School for a consultation. They took one look at my tooth remnant, shrugged their shoulders, and callously spat out the word "implant". They would have yanked out the rest of my tooth right then, if I hadn't stopped them last minute and asked them to dome it so I can consider my options. Fast forward to me sitting in Dr. Duchan's office after somehow stumbling upon his flawless Yelp reviews, and he tells me there's more than enough tooth to salvage. A few weeks later, instead of a gummy gap, I have a spanking new crown and a few thousand dollars saved to spend on more granola bars (just kidding.) Dr. Duchan is a fantastic dentist, and seriously the nicest guy ever. He's what you would imagine Bob Saget would be like, if Danny Tanner was a dentist. (That's FULL HOUSE-era Bob Saget, NOT raunchy comic Saget.) He will involve you in the whole process, put you completely at ease, and still find time to share funny stories with you. Yeah, his office may feel like it's from another era, but it's perfect for him, down to the giant neon molar with the smiley face in the window. Dr. Duchan updates what is most important: he constantly attends conferences and keeps up with the latest developments in his field. I do hope he finds suitable front-of-house assistance soon, but the fact that he's able to gracefully do all the office work himself makes him even more impressive. Dr. Duchan is always a pleasure, however, recently he was extremely accommodating when a filling broke off my tooth. He was able to fit me into his schedule with very little notice, and he did a wonderful job, nearly painless, fixing my tooth. Preface: People ONLY see dentists when they HAVE to. (Unless they're hypochondriacs.) Case in point: chipped composite filling on my molar or rule out chipped molar tooth. Hard to top my previous dentist review @ Smile Solutions Dentistry but in terms of service and quality, Dr. Duchan is 5/5. I went for a run around R.O. and stopped in just to make an appointment. He is a one-man-show running his front office, doing the dental work, and is the hygienist and dental assistant as well as doing cleanings and sterilizing equipment. He's also the front office dental assistant scheduling and confirming appointments, verifying and billing insurance co's. I'm sure there's a superman costume under his white coat! Anyhow, booked my appt, filled out the paperwork ahead of time so I didn't have to on the next visit, ran home and returned 2 days later. His office is like stepping back in Mad Men era circa 1960-70s. Nothing wrong w/ the decor or equipment as everything may look outdated but look closely my friends, it works and is in GOOD condition. (Ever see a garaged '68 convertible? Yeah, that baby runs and looks good.) I got my pearly whites cleaned and he did xrays and found that a portion of my composite filling fell out. He offered to numb it up but also gave me the option that its not that bad to require lidocaine. Also, if it bothered me, he'll stop and lido that jaw up! Rule #1 of a great M.D./D.O./ DDS...give your patients options. I work w/ Dr's & Dentists so I like that he gave me choices. Dr. Duchan is gentle, we had casual conversations about Michigan things to do and see and before you know it, finished. Never heard the phone ring once, but I imagine Dr. Duchan isn't the type to get up in the middle of a patient procedure to answer a phone. He'll just call you back (as there's no front staff). When done, he did the math and calculated my copay and I paid (accepts credit cards) and was on my way. None of this shady overbilling for services or Asian Dr's that don't charge you the copays but rather bill for other services. (Seem like a good idea? Yeah, no. When you need that filling on tooth #30 but can't b/c they billed for it but didn't' do it, you're screwed. And you wonder why we don't have proper universal health coverage. Shady, shady dr's and patients! Accountability!) Docked a star b/c in the end, I've worked as a front and back office dental asst and having front staff would help with his load. He could probably see more patients and not base his office hours on appts if he had more help. But then again, Dr Duchan said at this stage in his life, he's not out to be the most high-tech and get the most patients and turn a big profit. He's comfortable taking patients as they come and making his own schedule. Maybe I'll give him that star back. ;) read more

Take what I say with a grain of salt. I've only been here once but I thought I'd comment just in case others experience the same. I went in because I needed a dentist to verify I needed a wisdom tooth pulled and essentially get the prescription before going to the dental surgeon (not Duchan). I went in and the place was empty. He had no receptionist. It felt kind of odd. I sat in the chair for about 5 minutes. He looked at the jaw then took a metal-dental tool and whacked the tooth that I had said was in severe pain ALREADY. It was excruciating pain he had caused. I got my prescription and left. The guy is very tiny guy and I couldn't help but think the guy is some kind of sadist intentionally inflicting pain on a bigger man. read more

Dr Duchan is a great dentist. He is, as others have mentioned, a one-man army here. He takes appointments, checks you in, does all the work without an assistant, and checks you out and sends you your reminder cards. He remembered me by name when I called to make an appt even though I'd been MIA for a while. He liked up all my coverages and wrote them down before my appt, which was fabulous. His office is well located in downtown RO on Washington, and is quaint and calm with a mid-century modern vibe. He is affable and kind. He gives you tons of time, so appointments can be long, so just plan accordingly or let him know if you are pressed for time. Of course, then you won't get to hear his stories, so you'd be missing out. Hubs and I went to him 2 years in a row and were very pleased with our cleanings. I tried another dentist earlier this year, and felt the cleaning wasn't as thorough and generally felt they weren't up front with me and were recommending things I wasn't comfortable with, and I'm so glad I've switched back. He is up to date with all guidelines, and we discussed how many dentistries will just X-ray you willy nilly even though that's not recommended. He gave me lots of free advice on dental care for my new baby too. Oh, AND he lets me choose my toothbrush color and toothpaste ohhh yeah! Fully recommended. read more

Dr. Duchan became my dentist a few years ago when i had a dental emergency. Before this, I was still going to my old dentist in Clinton Twp., who i love! Problem was, i live in Huntington Woods now and getting out to Clinton Twp. for appointments were pretty difficult. So here's what happened, somehow i bit down on my front bottom tooth and hit it just right. It was SO loose, i thought it was going to fall out! i was headed to Vegas the next day and was so scared something was going to happen to my tooth. My boyfriend called Dr. Duchan (he's been his dentist forever) and although he was closed that day, he agreed to meet me there and check out my dental emergency. Dr. Duchan was SO nice, thorough and really took his time to make sure everything was done perfectly. He had to bond my teeth together and then smooth it out. I have extremely sensitive teeth, and he was trying his hardest to make me as comfortable as possible. My tooth was fine for about a week or so, and then the bonding starting coming off. I called Dr. Duchan again, and he fit me right it. He used a different brand of bonding and did the whole procedure again. He remembered how sensitive my teeth are, and again was super careful to not cause me too much discomfort. After this bonding, it stayed on and lasted for almost 2 years. Just recently, it came off again, and he fit me right in (and again on his day off). I absolutely love Dr. Duchan. He is such a nice guy, and really does care about his work. He is an amazing dentist. His office is super low-key and nothing fancy, but it's always super clean. Dr. Duchan also does the cleanings, answers phones, sets up the appointments, does the billings, etc. He does it all!!!!!!! I was a patient of Dr. Duchan's for three years and can attest to his top notch rating. He's one of the few things I miss from my days living in MI and wish he could have moved with me! Dr. Duchan has great patient rapport, will only charge you for what you need, and will give you good advice. As others mentioned, don't expect a fancy setting (for which you will pay if you go elsewhere). Instead, expect a functional setting that will get the job done at a very reasonable price. He will go out of his way to work with your schedule and will contact you only when you're due for a check up or cleaning. I never had an insurance claim denied and was happy that everything went smoothly every time I visited his office. I cannot recommend Dr. Duchan enough if you're looking for a dentist in the Detroit Metro area. He was worth the drive to Royal Oak from downtown Detroit (where I lived) and believe his past, current and future patients will agree with me. read more

I met Dr. Duchan at a health club, and decided to make the switch from our previous dentist to his office. First of all, I love the vintage decor. I don't go to a dentist because of fancy flat screens which might compensate for in-room performance, I go because I'm confident in their ability to take care of my oral health needs and help me prevent further dental work. Dr. Duchan treats every patient with an immense amount of hospitality and provides clear help and healthful steps to avoid cavities and other such dental issues. Like Kelly A. said, Dr. Duchan takes his time, from the exam, to exploring and explaining payment options. I've never felt more comfortable or cared for than when at 911 S. Washington to visit Dr. Duchan. The on-site parking is truly ideal, especially in downtown Royal Oak, where parking is cheap but requires change (which I never have!). read more

Moved to the area in October and wanted a dentist that was closer. Went today for the first visit, no wait and he said he does that so people enjoy coming to their appointment. So nice when most doctors cram their schedules to get more money. He did the booking of the appt, insurance phone call to verify coverage, and cleaning. Let my 2 year old sit on my lap the whole time and explained everything to him. He let him play with instruments and water and gave him a toy at the end. I've been through at least five dentists and was questioning if there were any dentists out there looking after the interests of their customers rather than lining their own pockets. Some dentists invoiced for more money even after insurance had paid for the cleaning but not Dr. Duchan. Some dental offices have poor customer service with dental assistants/receptionists - but no need to complain, not giving them business is enough said. So believe me, it's good that Dr. Duchan is a perfectionist who prefers to do things himself; he does have an assistant that works part-time but sparingly and good help is always hard to find. This is true of Dr. Duchan, who's really good at what he does and holds no punches at telling you the truth about dentistry and maintaining healthy teeth. I've learned a lot just by asking questions and he's a professional that I would highly recommend. For example, I was looking into orthodontic treatment and was given four references to call - glad I did because each had varying opinions and costs for the treatment; then I needed periodontal treatment, again Dr. Duchan gave references to check and in the end, I was happy with my selections because it was the best fit and big thanks to Dr. Duchan. If you're like me, who care about professionalism, creating value for customers and courteous to others then go see Dr. Duchan. I wrote a 4-star review for Dr. Duchan a couple of years ago, based on cleanings (and I reserve 5-star ratings for outstanding businesses). Now I have to up it to five stars. I lost a huge filling that comprised much of a molar, and was fearing root canal, crown, etc. In a one hour appointment, without Novocaine, Dr Duchan crafted a new resin filling that is so much better looking. He spent a lot of time ensuring that it was just right. And the cost, after insurance, is a pittance. He's very personable, and I much prefer his plain office to that of my previous dentist with high falutin' technology. Dr. Duchan's philosophy is to preserve natural tooth whenever possible. My husband and I moved to this area a few years ago. We started with a different dentist. She had a beautiful office and staff, but she would come up with procedures that were not necessary. Totally up charging our insurance company. So I went to my usual resource Yelp and found Dr. Duchan. He has been amazing to both my hubby and I. He is attentive and eager to explain his procedures without adding charges. He doesn't have a pretentious office with a fake staff.
