Doctors spend a fortune becoming doctors, and the only way they can pay that money back is to specialize; so too few become general practioners. Additionally, the computerization of our records was an essential step in appropriate care, but some doctors then spend their patient visits with their heads in the computer & not listening much to their patient. All that having been said, I have never been treated with anything but kindness and patience by the staff at NCFHC. Sometimes, someone might be having a bad day and not smiling, but their care has been efficient & their sadness or grumpiness has not rubbed off on me. It does take WEEKS to get in to see my doctor, and that's a negative; but it isn't the clinic's fault. Alternatively, they have a staff of urgent-care folks who can see walk-ins, so the disadvantage is ameliorated if my need is more immediate (though it doesn't work for refills! -- see below). My one agreement with other reviewers is how long it sometimes takes to get a refill on a controlled substance. I understand the need to "control" such prescriptions, but if you need to be seen before the 'scrip can be refilled & you can't get an appointment for weeks (always longer than a month now), then you will surely run out before you can be seen. Drugs that are supposed to be taken every day, consistently, are not helpful if you have to go off them while waiting for the 'scrip to filled again. You may go through a form of withdrawal, however mild it might be, and then a period of acclimating when you start up again. This sucks! Especially when it happens repeatedly. There must be a better way. On the whole, I like the service I get at the clinic. We're on "the Coast", peeps. It ain't like bein' in the Big City. And that's why we like it here. Generally.

Unfortunately, he moved away from San Francisco, and I have yet to find another openly gay doctor in SF who's matched his bedside manner, humor, and wit. I always felt extremely comfortable with Dr Goldyn, because he treated me like a human being, and not just another numbered HMO patient. He doesn't patronize you, and isn't afraid to joke a little. I have been on the same initial dose of opioid pain medication can for three year and have heard every excuse from New FDA regulation to his patients dying causing his ability to change in prescriptions frozen while under review. He tells me that he is not willing to try any other treatments other than to hit the refill button monthly. He doesn't care about my pain, suffering, this causing me to drop out of a doctorate program, and ruining my life. He has no sympathy or compassion. Appointments last about two minutes always recorded now where he doesn't care or even ask about my pain. I have been hospitalized several times for Tylenol overdose and GI bleeding due to this added stress, but still doesn't care. Choose a different doctor. My husband got a preliminary diagnosis from a provider for a very serious auto-immune disease --…read moreone that typically presents with permanent blindness or an aneurysm. Diagnosis confirmation is by biopsy. Dr. James told him she *knew* he didn't have that disease by looking at him from across the room, and claimed that what was an artery was actually a vein. With my husband under a local, she spent an hour attempting and failing to get biopsy material. He had a subsequent biopsy from Dr. Susman, and it was confirmed that that WAS an artery (not a vein), and that the original diagnosis was correct. (Looking on Wikipedia I was able to discern the location of that artery!) Dr. James is very personable, but had we stopped there, instead of getting care elsewhere, my husband might be blind or worse right now .Waiting for the initial biopsy and then for an appt. for a second one and for the results for that one set us back in getting a diagnosis by a week.
