We asked the clerk in one of the gift shops in Winslow for a restaurant recommendation for dinner. Ari suggested The Brown Mug Cafe. It's located a short couple of blocks east of the Standin' on the Corner park. The place was packed by locals on a Saturday night at 6 PM. A table had just opened - it was quickly cleared and we were seated within a minute of arriving. Drink orders were taken and we perused the menu that was surprisingly varied and long. We both opted for Mexican food. I'm here to tell you that we both agreed that it was some of the best Mexican food we've had anywhere. And the sopapillas (included with the meal) were light and fresh and a great way to end the experience. The restaurant has been there a while. It's not fancy, seats are well-worn and there are probably a dozen or so tables total. The servers worked hard, were attentive and friendly. Our meal cost $40 + tip - not bad for 2 meals, a beer and a glass of wine. Without the recommendation, we probably would have never stopped there. We knew when we walked in and saw the place packed with locals that we were in for a good meal. And we were not disappointed. I'm not sure when we will pass through Winslow again. We arrived with a few recommendations. The restaurant is tiny, busy. We were told to sit anywhere. We chose a table by the front window. All seats are torn. So old. The windows sill next to us was filthy, never cleaned, curtain tops have 2 inches of dirt. Never washed. The entrance door is half painted. The entire room, old, dirty. Food was spilled on floor, wait staff just walked over it until one of them kicked it landing under our table! My husband used the restroom, said it wasn't very clean. His taco & enchilada was ok, my ham& cheese sandwich was minimal. Jalapeño chips served, no other flavor. With the restaurant being so dirty, how could the kitchen be clean? On a road trip we stopped by a little hole in the wall, greasy spoon atmosphere, Mom and Pop authentic Mexican restaurant. The building is very old and small. Just a handful of tables available so be ready for close encounters. . The food was SO good!!!! Came across this gem on our drive from Payson to Winslow AZ. Small family owned cafe that appears to be there for years off Route 66. We shared the Navajo Taco as it was big with ground beef, beans and both red & green chile sauce. It isn't hot chile, but has a great flavor. Fry bread was soft & tender. So Good!! First time here and we're not from the area. We're passing through and my mom heard of this place from a relative. We sat ourselves in the early morning at 9 am. It was busy at the time on Thursday morning. We only saw one waitress. We placed our orders quickly! We got our drinks first. Our meal came soon. So overall, quick breakfast service. Pretty good. We got our food orders with the sopaipilla bread, which is a normal thing I noticed when I looked at the other guests' tables. However, the waitress forgot our chips and salsa, which is a thing they're know for, according to my relative. Again, it's our first time here . Waitress forgot my knife so I had to cut my huervo Rancheros with my fork. I didn't want to ask since it seemed she was pretty busy taking orders, clearing the tables and cleaning up. Again. We didn't eat anything but had a large coffee. The coffee was fresh and good. They have some different creams and sweetners. However, I drink mine black and hot. The service was outstanding. Our server, Ashley, was attentive and friendly. She told us the Brown Mug Cafe was opened in 1958 and is still owned by the granddaughter. The diner is old but clean and well kept. I grew up in Winslow for 14 years and I had never come here to eat until this visit. It's super small, which I expected based off the outside appearance but they have seating in the back so don't be shocked to find no seats up front but ask about the back. My husband and I ate here five years ago, and there have been zero changes-same signs, great food, and efficient friendly service, plus not a single painting on the walls has changed. It is still filled with locals at lunchtime who appreciate reasonably priced, large, tasty meals. The only addition is curbside pickup, so onstreet parking in front is reserved. My three fish tacos came with large chunks of crispy fried fish and loaded with lettuce and crema. Check all three daily specials boards because each one listed different specials. The Brown Mug Cafe in Winslow is a throwback to days of old. This roadside Cafe sprang up like so many others on the side of Hwy66. Good food, served quickly with reasonable prices, and few frills. With the modern Interstate siphoning most traffic away from downtown Winslow, the Brown Mug has survived by becoming a locals favorite. We first ate here because it sits across the street from LA Posada. We've come back because the food is good, the prices are reasonable and the service quick and friendly. The Brown Mug is high on my list of reasons to get off the Interstate and slow down. read more

I asked for a veg option for a sauce instead of red or green chili. I got the enchilada sauce. Very very good. Fresh chilies, big and flavorful. The sopapillas took me back to my childhood. Rude beyond belief. I am a 28-year Winslow resident. This place must be living on a reputation of 20 years ago. We have recently visited twice and have been distinctly unimpressed by the "who are you, we wish you weren't here" vibe. Today, a Wednesday, we and two out-of-town friends arrived at 11:30. A young couple was waiting inside the door and obviously had been for some time. With the four of us, the tiny entry was uncomfortably cramped. Another guy arrived behind us and was forced to stand outside. There were numerous empty tables, at least two waitresses and at least two women behind the counter. For at least five minutes, no one so much as acknowledged the existence of any of us, even the young couple. Not a word. Not the slightest pleasantry. It became quite unbelievable. We and the guy on the sidewalk finally just turned and left. Never again. There are much better places in Winslow than this little living-on-reputation hole in the wall. Hopefully the young couple has been seated by the time I post this. read more

Brown mug has been a decades-long staple in Winslow for good reason. I've been eating here since I was a kid and the food is consistently delicious. I feel extremely safe in this restaurant they're practicing safe practices out of the screen door for areas but you can sit inside if you wait at the door. I've heard a lot about this little restaurant in Winslow. Asked my friend if it was any good and of course being a local there she said it was. So I joined her for dinner. Atmosphere is definitely not the most appealing place in the world and the place was pretty cramped. The staff was friendly though. Prices are really good, portions are small, but the food was tasty. I got the red chili enchiladas with rice and beans. I did not realize that red chili only pertained to the sauce and not the fillng. It was a cheese enchilada with red sauce. This is my second time ordering take out here. I'm in Winslow for my sons wrestling tournament. Last year we used the order ahead feature and they brought everything out to the car. Today I went inside to order and the service was just as wonderful as I remember it. I've been thinking of the sopapillas ever since I had them last year. We arrived really late at night and were searching for something to eat in the area. It was hard to navigate Winslow at night - super dark - yet we stumbled upon this little cafe. I am so thankful we found such a great spot for Mexican food! The perfect "late night" meal after a long day of driving. The Navajo Taco was incredible! Some times you see reviews and think....what are people thinking? Why would someone leave a one star review because the salsa was hot? You are passing through a Hispanic/Native American area. The salsa SHOULD be hot. If the food is authentic then it's going to be the way it is! This place is not a 4 star dinning experience. It's very inexpensive south western style Mexican food! Some people's expectations are insane! I'm a small business owner myself and to think people can leave idiotic reviews and mess with a restaurant's livelihood is unfair. I ate here tonight.
