a sandwich, asparagus, and rice

I've lived next door to brown bag for years and never tried it. I HAD NO IDEA HOW GOOD IT WAS!!! This is the grilled steak sandwich, asparagus and jalapeño corn casserole. All this for $11? TAKE MY MONEY!!! Can't wait to try more menu items!!!

Grilled chicken, jalapeño corn casserole, berry slaw, decadent brownie

"No school lunch next week, I'm brown baggin' it."- Young MC from the song "Principals Office" on his awesome Stone Cold Rhymin album, 1989. I knew I was going to have a good lunch when I pulled into my street parking spot directly in front of the restaurant and there was still 50 minutes in the meter. Thank you to the sad sap who is out $1! Very cold day here in Knoxville. Early morning temps below 30F and currently sitting at a bone chilling 42F. Too bad, because the outdoor courtyard would be a great place to have lunch and enjoy the sun. Instead, I am cooped up inside, staring outside the window like an abandoned puppy up for adoption at the pound :( The menu is filled with mostly healthy items. I always love that. I settled on the grilled chicken. Came with two sides: I got jalapeño corn casserole and berry slaw. The chicken was slightly dry but still good. The casserole was delicious with just the right amount of spicy, and the vinegar based cabbage slaw was enough to have a cooling effect. I added a brownie and it was perfect. So chocolates and silky with chocolate chips. Gooey perfection. I ate a couple bites and am saving the rest for later. Service was freaky fast™. I ordered, got my water, sat down, and my food was already ready. How did they do that? A solid lunch spot for sure. I got my entree with two sides and the most delicious brownie ever for $10. I call that a bargain.

This new restaurant is located in the First TN plaza at the intersection of Gay and Main. You order at the counter and their menu is written on a board above the cashier. They have a couple of meat dishes (chicken, steak, salmon and maybe pork?) and about 6 side items. You can either pick 2 or 3 side items with your meat. Or get 3 veggie sides. They bring out your meal to you pretty quickly. I sat out on the patio and enjoyed the beautiful beautiful courtyard. The meal was pretty delicious. I got the red skinned mashed potatoes, snap peas and berry slaw salad. All three items were deliciously yummy. So yummy that I will likely go back for lunch today. It is a little pricey. My meal cost about $9 including tax without a drink. They are open for breakfast at 7:30 and close at 2:30 pm. A great option for people who work downtown. Parking is somewhat of a pain since there are no city garages immediately close by. The privately owned garages charge a ridiculous amount ($1 in 20 minute increments). I recommend utilizing parking meters if you are lucky enough to find one open. Nice downtown addition. Comes highly recommended!

Grilled chicken with baby spinach salad and mashed potatoes. $8.50. Tasty and relatively healthy.

A very solid choice for lunch. Most of the crowd is business people from the office towers, but all are welcome. Order at the counter and they bring the food out to you quickly. The decor is minimalist modern. I got the grilled chicken with baby spinach salad and mashed potatoes as my sides. It's a lot of food. The chicken was tender and the grilling tasted good. The salad also has orange slices and cranberries. $8.50.

Great service. Good food. Ambience is nice and clean. Seems like a lot of government folks come here during their lunch break.

Worst and driest chicken I have ever had in my life. How can you ruin chicken that bad and then serve to customers?

Oh man, did I need this meal in my life. I was out way too late the night before, and this was…read moreeverything my heart could desire lol. We got the deviled eggs, southwestern Benedict, green tomato Benedict, and the breakfast burrito. Everything was great. I didn't have anything to drink other than water, which seems silly at a place that has beer in the title, but check out the brunch. The servers were mostly younger folks, but really attentive and professional. The vibe is clean and casual. A spot that the local college kids dig, which I wasn't mad about. I'm a kid at heart. My buddy got the ice cream cookie thing and the banana pudding taster. The ice cream cookie will make me quickly turn into the Michelin man, but damn it was good.

Brunch gives you access to a small buffet (fresh fruit, potato salad, chicken salad, pasta salad, brownies, and cookies) that you can help yourself to while waiting for entrees. I split a mimosa carafe which was delightful, their coffee is spectacular as well. While it was packed, I could still speak at a normal volume with my partner and enjoy our valentines morning! The energy and ambiance didn't feel overly hurried and it was overall very welcoming and pleasant. I ate the quinoa benedict and LOVED it!! For two entrees, coffee, and a large mimosa carafe we split about $50.

We had heard of this place for a while and wanted to check it out and we're so glad we did. The food and service were amazing. Walking in it's a narrow restaurant, that has a bar on one side and tables on the other with kinda a rustic feel to it. We were seated immediately and our drink orders were taken. Since we hadn't been there before we got water and then pursued the menu a little for drinks. I had a question between two drinks and the server was very good at describing the drinks and ultimately decided to try the Darryl Strawberry, while my husband got the Nor'easter. The drinks came out and they were really good. They weren't overly strong, you could taste the bourbon in each of them, but it wasn't overpowering. For food we got the OPA! to start and then the Billy for me and the Mother Clucker for him. The OPA was awesome. It's pan seared feta with honey and served with fresh bread. The honey added a little extra sweetness to the feta which went really nicely with the crusty bread. The Billy had goat cheese, bacon, onions and, a tomato jam on it. It was delicious. The creamy goat cheese with the bacon and smokey tomato jam all went amazingly together. I got onion rings as my side, which were crunchy hot and so so good. The Mother Clucker was also really good. I only had a bite of it to try, but was definitely impressed. My husband upgraded to the duck fat fries which were out of this world. Super crunchy, great flavor. Our server kept checking back on us the whole time making sure we were satisfied with our drinks and food, but we had absolutely no complaints. This is a great place for a date if you want good food or to hang out with friends. We will definitely be back.

I learned that Knoxville hosted the 1982 World's Fair, so we walked around the old fairgrounds and then down to the river. Beautiful area and a perfect day to just hang out. At Calhoun's, I loved our waitress, sitting out on the deck, my blackberry margarita, and the chicken tenders with honey mustard. The bacon-wrapped burnt-end brisket was tasty too, although a little dry. Maybe that's just part of being burnt ends. Honestly, I thought most of our food leaned a little dry for me -- except those chicken tenders. Maybe in Tennessee, the barbecue sauce is supposed to do more of the heavy lifting. Either way, great food, great weather, great company, and a very good day all around.

My wife and I were in town for a wedding and decided on Calhoun's because it was where we had our first date 32 years ago. This time was a little disappointing. Server and manager were overly concerned that our experience was not up to par and offered to cook another plate. They did take our entrees off of the bill, so kudos for trying to make it right. Sounds like Calhoun's needs a better kitchen manager. Front of house staff was great
