We had that done, but the smell did not improve. After more troubleshooting, we scheduled an appointment with Northern Ben Franklin. I specifically requested a smoke test, given everything we had already ruled out. Their technician told me that "a smoke test would be complicated" and refused to perform it. Instead, he said he needed to start by inspecting all the P‑traps and the toilet flange. I agreed, even though I was confident this wasn't the issue. He began at the shower drain. After removing the drain guard, he said the water level wasn't appropriate and that he was "concerned the P‑trap was cracked." When I asked how we could confirm that, he suggested using a camera. He retrieved it from his truck, inserted it only a few inches into the drain, and immediately declared that there was no P‑trap. He then said he needed to "call the plumber out" to give us an estimate, which was confusing, because I thought he was the plumber. He did not continue the inspection he said he needed to perform. He never checked the sink P‑trap. He never checked the toilet flange. Before leaving, he also tried to sell me on having their affiliated water‑damage company come out and pitched a monthly subscription plan. I agreed to let "the plumber" come out, hoping for a second opinion. Instead, he looked around the basement, where the smell is not present, and told me our water heater is old and our sump pump is not up to code. These are things we already knew about and do not wish to repair right now. He then gave me an inflated estimate for tearing out the shower to install a P‑trap and replacing the water heater. None of this addressed the odor we originally called about. I felt completely unheard. We then brought in a second opinion from a different company. That technician performed the smoke test I originally requested. The result was clear: the toilet flange is broken, something that could have been diagnosed if the first technician had actually examined the toilet flange as he said he would and charged me $300 for. The second plumber also put a camera down the shower drain and confirmed that there is a P‑trap, exactly where it should be. When I called this company to request a refund for the diagnostic fee, since the diagnostic was not performed, they tried to tell me they would "send another tech out." At that point, we had already had two visits from them, neither of which addressed the problem or performed the testing we requested. Sending another technician was not a solution; it was an attempt to avoid acknowledging the incomplete and incorrect service we received. Frankly, my main complaint is that this company operates like a sales funnel, not a plumbing service. They will charge you for diagnostics they did not perform, provide incorrect information, and spend most of their time trying to sell you additional services, subscriptions, and affiliated companies. The focus was never on solving the actual problem, only on selling more work.
