They also sell live carp at $4.99 per pound, but no shellfish or six plus legged creatures. Though I don't appreciate the fishy smell, I have mostly tasted fresh quality from my purchases. Salmon, Black Bass, and Tilefish are some of my favorites. The only item that has been a letdown was the Atlantic Cod, which has a slight ammonia smell. Jury is still out, but I will continue to give this shop chances and hope that was just a one time thing.

An employee (female 65 year old) relavitively new, came from behind the counter and approached me in an intimidating confrontational manner to take my purchases because I took too long to pay, ‍. She generally issues commands to customers from behind the counter but this is a first. The employee brushed against me and was intimidating creating a situation that could have escalate into physical violence. I'm not short or weak and that was pretty daring. As a customer, I found this treatment unacceptable. Customers should be able to conduct business without being subjected to intimidating or threatening behavior by incompetent hires. She's been there a few months and I'm sure I'm not the only one experiencing this . Most disturbing is that the business, while profiting, cares very little how customers are treated. After the incident, I attempted to contact the business at 347-238-1081 so that I could speak with a manager or the person responsible for the business and address the situation directly. They're never there, I was told, and it's no wonder. I was unable to connect with a manager or responsible person, and the call ended with the other party hanging up after hearing the complaint, probably already aware it's been happening. I called the business back afterward, but my call was not answered. I am requesting that the business investigate this incident, preserve and review any available security camera footage from approximately 12:39 p.m. to 1:30 p.m., on Oct. 2, 2026 and provide a response regarding how this treatment of a customer will be addressed. I left my number with the male employee. I am filing this complaint until I receive such response, to create a formal record of the incident and to seek accountability concerning the threatening and intimidating behavior. If you can afford to offend and and allow your associates to challenge customers who spend their hard earn money in your establishment, while your fish remains unsold, you should not be in business and should allow other more capable business owners to serve the neighborhood. We don't need to be threatened in our own community. The next person may not show restraint.

However, it was only recently where, upon preparing for a party I was hosting, and where I was making CEVICHE(!), that I realized I might need more fish (and was not about to schlep all the way back into Manhattan and Whole Foods, to get some more). So WHERE to go in Astoria, for some unquestionably good quality, fresh fish?? Hmmm...Yelp to the rescue! I saw the reviews for Blue Island, and decided to check it out. A man there approached me and offered assistance. I asked him what the difference was between the two types of fresh scallops I saw there. Once I explained my concern...that I wanted the best, freshest scallops possible...since I was making ceviche and all....he then told me he had a third type scallop downstairs. He said 'that's the scallop you will want to use'. I had a good feeling about this place, and this guy, just from the way he responded to me. He knew about making ceviche, and it was clear that he knew his stuff...that he was not just 'saying things', or telling me what he thought I wanted to hear (as is, sadly, often the case with some other places...where it's clear the staff know NOTHING about the product they are selling!) Anyway, I bought a pound of the scallops he recommended, and brought them home. As soon as I began cutting into the scallops (I was cutting them all in half for my ceviche), I immediately knew....'wow, these are going to be beautiful!!'. I could tell by the firmness..the texture...the appearance, etc. And indeed, in the end, the ceviche and the taste of the scallops was phenomenal! I'll be back again here, for sure. ;-)
