Service was consistently poor, staff were mostly unfriendly and what was meant to have been a 'special' weekend ended up being a real let down. I hasten to add that none of the negatives we experienced were down to Covid-19. The only positive experience during our stay was the wonderful lady who served us drinks in the brasserie. Sadly for the Grosvenor, the service she provided only amplified how poor most other elements of our stay had been.

At around 11pm someone hits the 'off' switch and the courtyard becomes an area of serenity and calm, so as not to disturb guests and local residents.  So far so good, we arrived on a Friday afternoon at around 5pm. There had been a maintenance issue in an adjoining room so we were unable to use our room. At this point in my opinion it would have been a nice gesture for the hotel to maybe offer us a complimentary drink or two?  The room rate is not cheap, nor are the bar prices so although the hotel clearly has a captive audience with considerable disposable income, it's the little things that count in my opinion.  When we did get to our room there was a rather unpleasant odour which did eventually clear with the aid of an electric fan. The hotel has free wifi although this didn't seem to work in our 3rd floor room.  I was also impressed with the polished polite young waiter/waitress staff who seemed to be doing their jobs with pride. Special mention to Tom who served us drinks in the evening.  Discounted parking is available at the nearby NCP car park, which is secured between 11pm and 7am.

And after years of searching for a good, unique, hangout in Chester, I've finally found one. Tucked away behind beautiful architecture, it's a place reminiscent of a magical building out of a story book. Oddfellows isn't your typical bar/restaurant. It's not one of these five pounds beer and burger chain establishments, nor is it the latest minimalist trendy club. It sits quite happily in between these things, making for a slightly schizophrenic experience, it doesn't seem to know exactly what it is. However, this only adds to the charm. There's no other place like Oddfellows, which boasts a hotel, two restaurants and a bar area, as well as a beautiful outside garden. Some frankly bizarre decor adds to the whole experience; on your journey from the front door to the back door you will see a large pig statue, an upside down table stuck on the ceiling and a stags head on the wall wearing a rather fetching hat. The spasmodic approach to decor only serves to embellish just how unique this place is. The staff don't let the place down either, always polite and friendly and always available. The food is gorgeous too, I only ordered a sandwich but when it arrived it was more like a doorstop. Very reasonably priced too. So yes, Oddfellows, it's a brilliant place, so full of character. I love that it is one of the oldest hotels in Chester (since 1650), yet seamlessly incorporates all modern amenities. The lobby is charming! Lovely pictures of Chester around the lobby, beautiful wood staircase, and comfy lounge areas. The rooms are individually decorated. Some have some good views of the town. Lovely modern marble bathroom. However, it can be a bit small, but I did not mind. Breakfast was included in the stay, which is always nice Breakfast included tea, coffee, juices, fruit, yogurt, cheese, granola, cereals, pastries, and a choice of a menu item like hard boiled eggs and full English breakfast. Shout out to Ashley for making check in/out a breeze, able to store my luggage after check out (due to later train), and asked me how my night out with my friends was the night before.

It took me a moment to realize she meant a glass of ice and a lemon wedge, which of course I accepted. So I chose my entrée and paid and then sat. The girl who took my order was very pleasant. She brought my food and also checked on me a few times to make sure everything was OK and even offered to change the program on the television since I was the only person in the room. My fish and chips was piping hot and came with an assortment of sauces, including brown sauce, which I had never tried, but that was very good. I tend to read labels, so I was pleased to see that none of the nasty ingredients American food can contain were in it. The fish was cooked to perfection with the crisp of the outside and the tender inside, and the chips were really good. Peas were done perfectly. It came with an ample amount of tartar sauce or at least what I would call it. It was very flavorful. I would definitely recommend this to someone who enjoys a good meal and some live music, which unfortunately I had to miss due to my schedule. It appears they have live music often and the server said it gets busy in the 9pm hour. The cool thing too is that this place is also a hotel so you could stay upstairs as well. I regret I didn't take any additional pictures of the building because it looked historical and had some charm.

Literally a stones throw (even for those less athletically developed) from the train station, it's a reasonable facade, with what appears to be a little parking at the front- your only warning- this is only for loading and carries a pokey allotted slot of something like 20 minutes- you're actually better off parking in their carpark to begin with, as there is a door that avoids the long walk along the corridor and the lift to the majority of the rooms. Sorry if you're in the front rooms and you follow my advice! The check in desk is large, with friendly staff, and corridors shooting off to stairs and books, bars and lounges with ample seating, ample paintings and big fireplaces. We were here for the bestie's hen do- the booking process was a bit of a juggle- someone who we initially did things through had moved to another hotel, so we were left with a chap who didn't really get it, and in paying we were left with someone who didn't know what money was being taken, and well, it took around 30 minutes to pay a share, and then be sent a wrong invoice- I was a little worried about how it was all going to go down- but when we got there- there was nothing to worry about. The cocktail making was fab, a nice setting with green tiled bar, classic but strong cocktails. Slight issue that one of the cocktails was made with strawberries- an ingredient we'd asked to dodge due to the Bride's loathing of them. There was a cocktail making competition at the end- a bit of strange guesswork just having to pick one from the menu. Straight into afternoon tea- which was lovely, and they did bring out extra sandwiches- which were required really to soak up the sheer amount of alcohol from the cocktails. We were given the space privately, and it was big enough to host our large number. Things did run over- but that was most likely down to us... Our rooms were large, clean, and comfortable- nicely themed so they didn't feel like just another chain. (My roommate even had a nice bubble bath the morning after, having a night away from the kids). They set up our dining room, and left us to decorate it as we pleased, with a time slot beforehand to do so. They let us take our own wine with reasonable corkage, the bar however was reasonable with friendly staff. The food was great- a little crowdpleasing, but tasty, and well presented- the only issue I would say is the pastry was too thick- but they did give us a good menu range to choose from in advance. We had a disco and games etc in the room afterwards, they helped with the changeover- this was fab until they came into the room 45 minutes early and told us we were done and we needed to clear up- it was a bit of a dampener, but we'd had a good night regardless- I think they just didn't want to work much later. The bar was still open however, so we did have more drinks there too- the bar staff were more accommodating. The next morning, breakfast was fab, self serve, standard tiny juice glasses, and live music, which was a but odd, but seemed to work.

A lot of people would miss the oaklands as it is not in the city centre but that is a shame. The…read moredecor is fantastic since it's recent refit and the menu is huge lots of choice. Another pub that has offers like two meals for about five pounds (or about that) which is excellent value. The facilities are really clean and the open plan layout of the downstairs makes it light and airy which you can't tell from outside. There is also a delightful patio area at the rear overlooking the lawn must be lovely in the summer.

Rooms are usually clean as are the bathrooms. 30 mins of free wifi a night is just not enough though. I prefer a family room if it is at all possible, you get a couch in addition to the bed. The bathrooms also have an actual bath. Keep away from the lower ground floor rooms 1-15 they are at street level, very noisy and people can see straight into the rooms. Staff are nice, Very helpful and will go out of their way to help you. Breakfast is ok. I think i might be being polite by saying that, The mass cooked breakfast have a lot to be desired as does the stale and tasteless bread offerings. Location is very good, easy access to the station and the town.

We were a family party of six, my husband being disabled. On booking in , the receptionist noted this and promptly gave us easily accessible rooms without us having to ask. They were all smiling and happy at their work, ever ready with help and advice. Lovely spotless rooms with everything we needed to hand and lots of information if we needed it. We slept like logs! Comfy beds. +++++ I must say how much we enjoyed the food. ( Menus in our rooms so we could plan). The evening meal was superb , beautifully cooked and presented. Our waiter was a very energetic young man who was happy, helpful and made us feel special. What more can I say? Well done and Thank you Premier Inn Chester.
