Quite a nice looking setting, located right out of spitalsfield market. Went there my first time today but unfortunately the initial impression wasn't great. My coffee was on the sour end and that's certainly not a good sign for a good coffee. This is the 'sour' taste that you generally experience with poorly extracted espresso coffee. My experience tells me that sourness in espresso coffee is most often the result of the grind being too course or over-extraction. Over-extraction, the extended length of time that the hot water runs through the ground coffee, allows the naturally occurring but bitter Tanic acid to be extracted along with the desirable coffee oils. In this case, I guess it happened today. Maybe it was just an off day, but unfortunately, sometimes first impression summaries the relationship status. At least it was a peasant environment and it looked like a pleasant place for coffee. read more

The snarky part of me would say "Brooklyn Coffee? You might as well just call it Hipsterville and be done with it". Luckily Snarky Rob only comes out to play on the full moon (2 days ago). Yes, Brooklyn coffee hits all the clichés (bar-style window seating...check; minimalist, vaguely industrial decor...check; hip-hop/something-electronic-you've-never-heard-before-but-less-terrifying-than-Haxan-Cloak...check; lumberjack shirts...check), but ultimately they're pretty good at what they do. Besides, hating on hipsters is so mainstream now, I was over and done with that yeaaaaaars ago. Brooklyn is in a fantastic location, a stone's throw away from Spitalfields Market - I remember all those winter's days I had to walk all the way to Brick Lane to get a coffee fix when I was in the area. No more. They offer Caravan coffee, Rare Tea Co tea, a small pastry selection, and Mast Brothers chocolate bars (on a side note, is Single Origin chocolate on the verge of becoming the next big thing?). I was rather pleased with my espresso, although the flavour profile was much better a few sips down. I don't know how regularly they change their blend but the current one is definitely to my liking as it's pretty strong from the off, but the flavour evolves nicely and the acidity doesn't linger. No complaints here. I know Peter S. has a little bit of a gripe with the staff, but I thought they were fine and generally helpful. It's not like East London needs any more good coffee shops, but they got one and (if I were still a local, or at least an honorary local), Brooklyn would be a firm fixture in my rotation. read more

A most excellent flat white. *bonus - open 8am weekends! (a rarity in and around Shoreditch). A small, austere coffee shop right on Commercial Street just north of Spitalifields. Austere on purpose of course. White walls, black finishings, excellent coffee -- it must be Brooklyn, right!? Despite the über hip vibe - the barista was super nice and friendly. For less than £3 I was on my way with a happy little coffee. I'm really sorry I really didn't like this coffee. Despite being a Londoner the price took my breath away and not in a good way (£3.90) for an Almond milk latte. I had to chuck it halfway as I couldn't hack the bitter taste (whilst simultaneously t citing my friends asking the what was the most they had paid for a coffee in London). Perhaps my tastes aren't mature enough but I really didn't look I'd it hear and it's way too expensive - sorry! read more

Brooklyn Coffee - Coffee & Tea Near Me - London, XGL

Brooklyn Coffee has been open for just about a month now, and already has a whole slew of coffee-loving regulars, including my fiancé and I, and for good reason too. Why do I love this place? 1. The coffee, made from Caravan beans, is most assuredly top-notch. 2. The design of the shop is delightfully minimalist - all grey, concrete and chalkboards - but very nicely done. 3. The staff - Bryan and Reina - are amazingly bouncy and friendly, which is such a refreshing change from what you might normally get in a Shoreditch coffee place. Prices are what you would expect in an independent coffee shop in the area - £2.80 for a flat white and £2+ for pastries - and they also have a loyalty scheme (buy 8, get 1 coffee free). It's more likely you'll get a coffee to go, as there's no real space for you to sit down and linger. There are a few high chairs facing the window, as well as a long bench just outside the cafe, but that's really it. Still, it's such a small niggle, and, quite honestly, despite its newcomer status, Brooklyn Coffee have pretty much nailed everything I'd like in a coffee shop. read more

One of the best things about Brooklyn Coffee is that they open early. Like, 7 a.m. early. Which, despite the majority of London commuters whizzing around by that hour anyway, is strangely rare. Its small size means that it's more of a grab-and-go outfit rather than plug-in-and-stay-there-all-day kind of place, but if you're a media (or even City!) type that works around Shoreditch/City/East London, it's the perfect stop off for a cup of joe. I should also mention that they serve Rude Health almond milk as an alternative to dairy, which is difficult to find in London. The barista who was there during my visit explained that they recently switched to Rude Health because it foams better for lattes. Really strong, smooth flavor. Staff were exceedingly pleasant during my early morning visit, bringing me a glass of water (without me asking) as I sat in the window to enjoy the rainy view and not minding as my umbrella drip-dried itself all over their pristine, polished concrete (or so I remember) floor. The pastries are worth a try as well: my croissant was perfectly ever-so-slightly crunchy on the outside and wonderfully fluffy soft on the inside. read more

I went to Brooklyn Coffee shortly after they first opened (years ago) and thought it was just average at the time. Clearly I was not in a right state of mind. Because it's AMAZING. Such a good iced latte. They use Caravan beans - or sell them at least - and their espresso has that slightly sweet note of truly great coffee. This is my go-to anytime I'm within walking distance of Spitalfields. read more

Rob H is right: I had a mini, grumbled hissy fit at the discovery that there is no discount here for only having a single shot in one's coffee. But such feelings quickly melted away when I took a couple of sips of the flat white unfurled by the baristas. The coffee is damn good. Yes, when one tours the top places in East London one begins to wonder if one should judge them by a different standard, but I don't think that's fair. Even with the surge in new cafes in London, the coffee found at Brooklyn Coffee is still clearly in London's premier league and thus fully merits five stars in my view. Particularly when the service was as good as it was when we were there, with welcome cups of tap water being brought unprompted to our table. And when the brownie was as delicious as it was. The surroundings are a bit clinical and minimalist, promoting short stays rather than lengthy ones, but hey, that coffee. It's among the best in the area. read more

The coffee really isn't to my taste here, I'm not sure what the roast is but it doesn't quite hit the spot. That being said, it's absolutely nothing to do with lack of quality - the team at Brooklyn Coffee do a great brew, it's just more of a personal taste preference! They have their own merch too, which is pretty cute and I'm a proud owner of the cool black tote bag they sell in the shop. They have a good selection of pastries and also sell Mast Brothers chocolate at a reasonable price, but this is more of a 'to-go' place as there isn't much seating at all. read more

Decor is all black chalkboard which gave this small coffee joint a crisp minimalist feel. The friendly staff serve strong coffee and delicious treats, and a nice touch is that they even write on their black coffee cups with chalk pencils. Unfortunately there are only two sets of two high stools by the windows, so there isn't much room to sit if you're more than two people, so if you're in the area and on the go, this is a great place to stop by to grab a coffee and snack. read more
