OH BROOKLYN !!!!!
First off, I'm biased. I love NYC. It's my favorite US city and I'm not sure if (or why) that will ever change. I also love Brooklyn. I'm a huge Biggie Smalls fan and he hails from BK, so you can easily say I've been drawn to BK since the early 90s. I also love Bridges. Driving over bridges has always been one of the coolest road trip things to do, every since I was a kid. I remember being woken up on road trips just so I could see us pass over bridges. I'm not sure why I'm drawn to them, but I am. I love water so maybe there is something beautiful to me about being able to look and drive over water all at once.
With that being said, there is no way I could give the BK Bridge less than five stars. Every since my first trip to NY in 2007, I wanted to tackle the bridge. The first time I did, I felt like I conquered a bucketlist item. This last time, I felt like I was introducing a NY Virgin to one of the most unique pieces of NYC. The park is beautiful. I love that there is a whole park, including a dog park and a beach-like area where you can (and I have) write in the sand when it's warm out. The bridge sits over the Hudson River, so you can basically see everything. You will find that the George Washington Bridge isn't as far away as it seems when you're on the bridge. At the park, it's easy to end up right underneath the GW Bridge while looking back over at the BK Bridge. It's pretty cool and so is the Jane's Carosaul, which sits just along side of the Bk Bridge, in the park (or promenade as it is referred).
Walking to the bridge is pretty simple and there are signs everywhere to help you get to it w/ease. Once you get to it, you realize just how long the bridge is. It's a long walk and great for training, as many people do train there and ride bikes. Sometimes parts of the bridge are covered or closed for walking due to cleaning, repairs, etc. But for the most part, there is plenty of space for walkers, but there are also plenty of people. PEople stopping in front of you for selfies and glamour shots, people kissing along the sides of the bridge, of course the runners and bike riders, who have their own lane that you are NOT supposed to walk in. ...there are just people everywhere. All races, shades, accents, languages. It's such a loving walk across a piece of American history. The views are amazing....you see so much of NYC and BK and apts w/large life size clowns in the window (true story), as well as the love locks!!! People have left love locks all over the bridge, as well as their signatures. Make sure to bring a permanent marker w/you (or an ink pen will work). Sign your name or a tag or something to says you were there anywhere on the bridge !!!!!
If you need a picture of NY or a keychain, you might find a few vendors in different areas on the bridge tending to those needs. There are also benches for you to sit on and relax. My favorite part is the construction of the bridge itself. It's amazing !!!!! You look at it and can't help but think 'wow, someone's hands did this. They put these bricks together, got those ropes suspended.....so much work was done to make this bridge be what it is today and it's well worth the trip. Plus, it's free!!!!
What a great way to experience a great piece of NYC for no cost.....er, uhm...the cost of parking or riding the train to BK might be a cost, but other than that, you just walk up and let your eyes be in awe. read more
