There is plenty of parking spots and good to see no non sense going on in the parking lot. We have been to a few skate parks where there were shenanigans going on in the parking lot. We stopped because I used to skate and it cool to watch the different levels of skaters having a great time. I'm 56 now and no more skating, I do have a super cool RC truck that I normally bring to the parks, I didn't have it with me on this trip. It was good to see skateboarders , bike riders and scooter riders all having a good time together. Sometimes the younger scooter riders get a hard time from the older kids. We sat in the shade for about an hour and watched tricks being practiced and tricks being pulled off, it brought back a lot of great memories. It was a surprise to see that not everyone had a helmet on, I know it saved my head more than a few times. Side note, just as we were leaving the police pulled up in the parking lot just to do a walk around. This is a sufficient, safe place to camp. It seems safe, quiet, and secure. There are a lot of trees and bushes blocking the view of the freeway. The campground has paved roads and paths but otherwise is very dusty, dirty and super hot in July. We had a site that did not have a sewer in loop F. They have a dump station at the entrance. There was no easy path from the campsites in loop F to river access. The path to the river is behind the other loops. Once we found the rivers edge, the current was way too fast to use the river to cool off. The location was very convenient to Grants Pass and Medford. This is a fine place to stop for the night but we were glad to move on and wouldn't choose this as a destination to camp at in the future.

We collected multicolored rocks and explored the tide pools. The misty morning atmosphere was ethereal and relaxing. It was a high low tide day so we didn't see much sea life on the shore but we enjoyed the amazing views of the sea stacks near and in the distance. For those who might find the rocky climb down a bit challenging there is an easier access if you take the road to the beach.

This is one of my favourite "hidden" beaches along the Oregon coast. Closer to California than to…read morePortland, Whaleshead is part of the Samuel Boardman Scenic Corridor and it's not terribly well-marked so you have to keep a lookout for the turn-offs off of Highway 101 to get here. This is not a swimming beach, like the other beaches along Oregon and Northern California, the water is way too cold and turbulent and there are probably sharks in the area (since they like cold water). This is more of a walking and exploring kind of beach. Both times I came, I basically had the entire beach to myself except for some seagulls and the odd turkey-vulture that showed up on my path. You can walk, and walk and walk and not see another soul. Along with the setting sun against the sea haystacks, the photo ops and atmosphere here cannot be beat. With forested pines running along a cliff behind you, few beaches are as wild as this one, without a development in sight anywhere. Let's hope it stays that way because the natural beauty here is truly pristine and overwhelming.

A quick glance at beaches not too far over the border showed Lone Ranch Beach as a quieter local favorite. Well signed turn off took us here right off the 101. There were only a few other cars. What a gorgeous, dramatic beach! Tons of driftwood, sea stacks and forest that comes right up to the water. Walking along here was a lovely, peaceful way to spend an afternoon on the coast. There were several picnic tables on the grassy area before the beach and it seems like a great place to spend the day if you're local. Very glad I found my way up here!

One of many beaches in Brookings OR…read more The beach is part of the Samuel H. Boardman State Scenic Corridor in Brookings OR, a little further drive down after crossing the CA/OR stateline. We turned in the parking lot but it was full, luckily, we found a spot (well, we kinda made our own spot) LoL! We attempted to walk down to the beach following a trail to the left but it was somewhat unpredictable and a little dangerous so we turned around. The path to the right has a better access to the beach but we didn't go. Instead we just took in the coastal views from atop and watched the crashing ocean waves hit the offshore rocks. The beach features many scenic sea stacks too. There is a picnic area at the site. February weather was exceptionally sunny, no rain in sight, but it was windy. We happened across this dog friendly gem by accident and it was a great find. First there's a…read morebeautiful, dog friendly beach. It's certainly off the beaten path and during our time here only saw three other people and only one other dog. And they were pretty far away. The beach is a little unusual if you're not from the area and is made of this very small (most pieces were 1/16th to 1/4 inch) smooth rocks. It was really nice to walk on. Right along the waterline are very jagged rocks that look pretty hard to walk on, so it's probably not the best beach to plan on going for a swim. Besides the water is cold. There's plenty of driftwood and larger rocks to check out. The path from the park is a little steep and it could be a little slick when it gets wet. The walk up and down the hill is worth it. If you don't feel like taking your dog down to the beach there's also a large fenced in dog park on the other side of the parking lot. It's pretty bad, but we didn't see this at first because we thought the beach was so cool. We saw more people and dogs in the enclosed dog area than we did on the beach. If we're in the area again we'd definitely go back.

It's a pretty beach to walk a few miles on. Visitor center is a cool looking building, but not sure what's inside because it's closed for winter. Will reopen in March. Park also features a walk through the woods to the Winchuck River and the wetlands.

This beautiful beach in Brookings can be found by using a beach access trail from the water…read moretreatment facility parking area (indicated by a public access sign as you turn into the parking area). I wouldn't call this a hike as it can't be longer than a mile to get down to the beach, and most of it is paved. It is only accessible up until a certain point, then turns into gravel, eventually sea-smoothed stones, bits of logs, and sand. Our party of six adults and two children were looking for a beach to explore along the Brookings coast, and this ended up being a great choice. There are some extremely cool points of interest along the way, like panoramic views of the point and surrounding coastline, and a lookout trail that splits off and carries one up a steep cliff. None of the people in our beach going party opted for this, but it did look like a fun photo op. I wasn't sure if my dang back would allow for me to get up there. Maybe if I ever return. It was instead onward to the beach to set up chairs, let the kids make sand castles, and wander about looking for shells and tide pools, of which there were many! Hmm I'm just now remembering I left the teeny sand dollar I found at the airbnb. Aww. Our day was bright and sunny, which a friend local to the area told me is rare. Personally I was looking forward to an overcast chilly Oregon coast day, but I can't complain about sun and a gentle, cool breeze compared to the over 100 degree weather my friends and I left behind in California to come up here a couple weeks ago in September 2022. The water was not too cold to swim in, or at least wade in, which is what I opted to do. Salt water healing, yes please. This is a great beach for watching wildlife and observing native plants. One of the kids found the chonkiest bull kelp I have ever seen in my life, which needed three other people (okay maybe not needed but it made a cute picture) to help carry it across the beach. I would definitely come here again and try that steeper lookout point, should my mobility improve. Otherwise there is always the sweet beach access trail. Plenty of parking can be found, and though we saw bathrooms on our way down to the beach when my friend tried their door handles they turned out to be locked.

We didn't take advantage of the beach access, but got to meet some of the really friendly staff, who were eager to share their love of Oregon. Learned that in this area, many visitors will continue to travel up the coast to visit the various lighthouses, many of which are open for tourists. Will need to do that next time.
