Also, they give you exactly what is needed to paddle in Trinidad so you remain warm & comfy. I was so impressed with our guides, Nick and Alex, and their local knowledge of seabirds, marine mammals, and intertidal species. Whales are cool, but there are also a lot of other really cool animals & birds in Trinidad Bay. And these guides know just where to take you. They were not afraid to take us into a little rougher waters, when we asked them to, likely because they are so skilled and experienced. I also really appreciated all of the paddling guidance they provided making sure I was using my core/legs more than my arms. I was with a very large group and the guides handled everything with such class and professionalism. It is a step above any outfitter I've ever paddled with. We are really lucky to have them in Trinidad to help us access some of the most fantastic coastline along the California coast. They also do a great job interpreting the California Coastal National Monument! All of those rocks and islands are part of a statewide national monument that runs from the Oregon border south to Mexico! Wow! What a treasure. I've used them…read morewhen working as a commercial rafting guide on the Middle Fork of the Salmon, Main Salmon, Hells Canyon of the Snake, Lower Salmon, Forks - Upper - and Lower Kern Rivers, Upper and Lower Klamath, Scott, Cal-Salmon, Illinois, Wild & Scenic Rogue... and privately on dozens and dozens of rivers throughout the western United States. I've been hard on equipment and seen stuff fail and break, but I don't ever worry about my oars. When I started my own river business, having to decide which oars to purchase did not even cross my mind. And now that we entrust and employ other guides to utilize the equipment we purchase, the return on investment is an actual thing that matters. After over 20 years of running rivers, I continue to look forward to rowing Sawyer oars down my most favorite rivers.

These lagoons are a collection of landlocked waters right on the coast but protected from the Pacific Ocean. You can rent kayaks and paddleboards at Stone Lagoon Visitor Center. My instructor was very well versed and accredited to teach the course. He was also extremely patient with us newbies and took into account that we each had different body types and physical abilities. I especially appreciated the philosophy of the importance of safety at every moment. There were certainly little nuances I would not have thought of on my own. Best of all, it was REALLY FUN! I got to shoot 21 different firearms and it facilitated my understanding of what works for me and what I'd like to explore more. I recommend this course for anyone who is new to the sport or even the old dogs with rusty skills. I'm now an old dog with new skills and appreciation.

It's about a 5-10 min walk from parking to the school so be sure to give yourself a little time if meeting them for a lesson.
