The Bout Time holds up to 6, but we were comfortable with 5 guys who travelled to Brookings from Southern Calif to northern Oregon. This time, Steve took the Lighthouse Trip $255 - an all day excursion to the light house, 12 miles off shore near Crescent City, CA. It was a beautiful sunny day with almost no wind out in the ocean. I dropped Steve off at the harbor at 6:15am, expecting to have the ENTIRE day to myself until, at 12:20pm, Steve texted me and said to get ready to come pick him up because everyone hit their limit and they were already heading back! I had just started a reply to ask if he got the "elusive" halibut (just joking), and before I could hit send, he texted me to let me know - YES - he caught a halibut! It weighed 35lbs and Steve said he arms were so tired from landing it, that he could barely hold it up for the picks (I will try to attach to this review later)! I joined them at the boat once it docked and with Matt's assistance, we watched Captain Rich expertly clean and filet all of the fish for us (one guy caught a 5' Wolf Eel, which he shared portions of with the rest of the crew. We haven't tried eating this yet, but are looking forward to it). Turns out that halibut has 4 filets, not just the normal 2, so we gave Captain Rich and Matt of of them to take home. We dropped the rest of the fish (over 21 pounds of Halibut, Ling Cod and Rockfish) at the local fish store in the harbor and they quickly vacuum sealed it for us for the trip home. While waiting for the fish, I noticed that the current retail price of halibut was $32.95 per pound, so I think we got our money's worth on this trip!!! We're here for 2 weeks so Steve has already booked a second reservation with Rich for another fishing trip before we leave. You won't be disappointed going fishing with Captain Rich and Matt - they know so much about all of the fish in the area (really interesting info) and you can just tell, every time they start to talk about the boat and this harbor, they LOVE to fish!!!!

We had a quick stop back at the dock to meet with an ambulance and went back out to limit out. We felt like we were in good hands with this crew and they were very knowledgeable. We did expect to do some deep sea fishing however we had to stay close to shore due to weather however we were grateful to go out as this was the third booking that we made with this company. The first two trips were canceled due to weather.

My husband and I wanted to take our two boys (ages 3 and 4) kayaking on the Chetco this past weekend. It's early May and kayaking season for him doesn't really start until end of May. However, he made an acceptation and helped us out renting kayaks, gear and providing the shuttle service. Josh was warm, funny and extremely helpful. Because we have small guys we had to drive our car with the car seats to the drop off spot and he drove our car back to our campsite (Loeb park) while his wife took the shuttle car back. Josh even threw in some awesome squirt gun toys for our boys! It was so nice and turned out to be a highlight of the trip for our kids. Kept them well entertained.

Gabriel was prompt, friendly and provided insightful information about the fishery. Captain Jesus was an expert guide who spoke English and educated us on the fishery. Despite the unusually cold waters, he quickly got us onto two 15+ lb yellowtail and later helped us hook a 25 lb dorado on the surface. Day 2 was more challenging due to the previous night's storm, but we still enjoyed a scenic trip to the island, caught some quality rockfish, and landed a 34 lb pargo! My family also had an amazing experience, catching a striped marlin, several dorados, and more yellowtail. Baja Pirates is a first-class operation with seasoned captains and top-of-the-line gear. Next time, I'll leave my equipment and ice chest at home since Gabriel has everything you need right at the dock. Huge thanks to Leonard for an incredible trip--we'll be back! Just a reminder to everyone; fishing is unpredictable, but the Baja Pirates fish hard and will put you in the best position to succeed.

Phil soon started his own business. I have taken pictures of one his clients with a fresh 23-pound Smith River buck steelhead. I have caught many steelhead and salmon on both the Smith and Checto with him. My friend Rod Halperin won a belt buckle for biggest steelhead, a 37 incher, when we fished the Raider Derby with Phil. In the summers you can find Phil in Alaska fishing kings and silvers. I caught a 70-pound king on the Kenai with Phil and on one trip with Barry Brightenburg on the Kasilof Phil found us a dozen hookups on a single stretch as one boat after another went by as we rowed back to the top or put our rod tips in the water to hide the hookup. I know there are guides who know as much about the incomparably beautiful Smith as Phil. I don't believe anyone knows more. Want to have a good time with any guide? But it's an impressive walk through a lush green forest with these giant redwoods, gushing streams curving, and rolling over rocks. Lots of licken, moss, and ferns in this natural wonder.

Very fast, cabin to get out of the wind and plenty of deck space. Captain: Captain Clarence, really personable, helpful, great attitude, and knowledgeable. We had 3 first timers, two of them were 11 year old boys. The boys had a great time and looking forward to going again. The all around experience: We were the first boat out there. We were fishing within 15 minutes from leaving the dock. We limited on fish pretty quick with some real quality fish. He bled out every fish so when it was time to get the filets the fish was so clean. And to top it off he had plenty of shaved ice to keep the fish as fresh as possible. A quick glance at beaches not too far over the border showed Lone Ranch Beach as a quieter local favorite. Well signed turn off took us here right off the 101. There were only a few other cars. What a gorgeous, dramatic beach! Tons of driftwood, sea stacks and forest that comes right up to the water. Walking along here was a lovely, peaceful way to spend an afternoon on the coast. There were several picnic tables on the grassy area before the beach and it seems like a great place to spend the day if you're local. Very glad I found my way up here!

One of many beaches in Brookings OR…read more The beach is part of the Samuel H. Boardman State Scenic Corridor in Brookings OR, a little further drive down after crossing the CA/OR stateline. We turned in the parking lot but it was full, luckily, we found a spot (well, we kinda made our own spot) LoL! We attempted to walk down to the beach following a trail to the left but it was somewhat unpredictable and a little dangerous so we turned around. The path to the right has a better access to the beach but we didn't go. Instead we just took in the coastal views from atop and watched the crashing ocean waves hit the offshore rocks. The beach features many scenic sea stacks too. There is a picnic area at the site. February weather was exceptionally sunny, no rain in sight, but it was windy. Wish we had time to check out the tide pools but it was high tide when we went. Review #2525
