The Thrifty Mountaineer - Mothman chips

One thing I've learned so far visiting West Virginia: This part of Appalachia is obsessed with…read morecryptids. Mothman, Bigfoot, Sheepsquatch ... the gang's all here in West VA. The community really leans into myths and spooky legends, and you'll find restaurants, shops, food and drinks named after these cultural conspiracy theory characters all over the place. The Thrifty Mountaineer is the place to visit in Morgantown if you're into cryptids, because there are so many cryptid items for sale! Plushies, t-shirts, books, keychains, patches and so much more available. Mothman is THE cryptid of the state, and there are lots of Mothman things here. We picked up some Mothman potato chips, because we were curious what Mothman chips would taste like. (Turns out, Mothman tastes a lot like barbecue Lay's.) The store is also an overstock and liquidation store, a notary public and a place to get financial coaching. I can't even make this up. This store is so cool and random, and there are surprises around every corner. The people who work here are hella chill. But you'd have to be if you own and operate a friggin' store dedicated to cryptids, right? If you sell soap that smells like the Flatwoods Monster, you can't take yourself too seriously. These guys like to have fun.

Such a fun place to stop while in the Morgantown area! They have a decent sized parking lot and…read moresome fun signage outside. The inside consists of two rooms full of cryptid merchandise, general thrifty items, clothing, and your typical touristy gifts. They have a thrift "bin" which is essentially a table full of random stuff for $2. We found an unopened 6-pack of Hanes boxers and some replacement inner tubes that would fit a dirt bike. They have very fairly priced shirts for men, women, and children. I left with a $3 Bacardi tshirt and a $.50 corkscrew in a velvet drawstring bag. The staff couldn't be more friendly or helpful. They were so pleasant. There are two comfy chairs in the middle of the main room where you can relax while the rest of your party shops around. I'll definitely be back to share this experience with others.

My husband, adult daughter, and I visited for about an hour on a recent Monday. We weren't looking for anything specific but just checking it out on our way to the nearby Food Lion. There was much to like about the store. There was an eclectic selection of items for sale -- including, but not limited to, furniture, antiques, artwork, electronics, collectables, jewelry, books, coins, stamps, clothing, shoes, etc. Staff were friendly, greeting us upon arrival and informing us that fashion items were 20% off. We were also offered the opportunity to sign up for their Rewards Card, that gives a future discount upon accumulating enough points. The shop was clean and generally well-organized on shelves and racks. Access to the shop was easy from Good Hope Pike (there's a traffic light) and parking was more than sufficient. Prices were generally good, but somewhat inconsistent. My daughter bought two pairs of sweat/lounging pants for less than $7 for both given the 20% discount. Unfortunately, she realized only upon reaching home that the pocket zipper on one of them was broken. I looked primarily at the books, as well as women's skirts -- but unfortunately I didn't find anything that I wanted to buy. I considered getting Memoirs of a Geisha (hardcover) but didn't like the $6 price tag. A David Baldacci hardcover was only $3, but I already owned that specific book. Sorting through the clothing racks for skirts was a challenge. Categories of clothing (shirts, pants, skirts, etc.) were mixed together on over-stuffed racks, as were sizes, so it was hard to easily find items to buy. Shop hours (late Aug, 2025) are: Mon-Thurs, 10 am-7 pm; Fri-Sat: 10 am-8 pm. Closed on Sundays.
