Excited to try this place until I received a lot of attitude from the barista. I had questions about the menu and he acted like he didn't even want to assist me. The coffee is mediocre and the latte is not very good. It tastes completely artificial and the notes of the coffee are just not it. Great lunch spot with very friendly and helpful service. I chose a pick 2 lunch combo and asked for an add'l cup of soup. The Health Nut salad was fresh and crunchy with the addition of sunflower seeds & almonds. The balsamic dressing was perfect. I could eat this every day! The half Italian sandwich was standard and the Florentine tomato soup was delicious too. I was surprised by how busy this little cafe was in small-town Plainview. 2018 May 4 Update: Things do change. Not bad changes, just different. The cappuccinos are now small, not Latte'ish. The Rancillo has been sent to the back 40, and a large, unknown make, chrome machine is now in its place. Maybe there wasn't any reliable Rancillo repair place nearby. I've added some photos to show the new decor. The latest photos (I've finally added a few) give a good idea of the interior changes. COFFEE & FOOD: The coffee varies from good to great depending on the barista. The women (though young), seem to be the best of them. This is a place that tends to make wet cappuccinos, that are very close to the good lattes that they serve. Just an observation. The espresso machine is a large Rancillo, if that means anything to you. Sandwiches are high quality, available in limited quantity throughout the day. The specials for lunch are just fine. ATMOSPHERE: The atmosphere is like any college coffee hangout from Champaign-Urbana to Palo Alto. Which is not a bad thing. This is the hangout for the community. I haven't seen the red hat ladies, but a group of older retired men meet here weekday mid-mornings. It's friendly. It has chandeliers. This place is welcome to fixies, iPhones, male facial hair and those with a touch of ironic clothing choices. Employees are an interesting breed of Wayland students, who I would describe as young, white, Christian hipsters. Is there such a thing? Well, they exist here. All of them have been trained to create nice designs in the coffee's foam. This shop makes you understand that the old down-town Plainview business area is beautiful and the rest of the retail growing out by the strip mall hell near the freeway is no competition for a pleasant place to hang out like this. So no different than anyplace else with a nice down-town. COSTS: Prices are higher than you would expect in Plainview, but the quality is high. So it's fine. MISC. OBSERVATIONS: The wifi is good in this shop, BTW. I've been to this medium sized metropolis in the panhandle dozens of times. Plainview has a great deal of public works architecture from the depression and a more prosperous mid-century in the down-town. This city has saved it's brick streets, incredible. I am not used to this area being called West Texas, even though North Texas is 350 miles to the East/South East, but I digress. Of course there is a bit of movie history about this shop & Plainview which I will not go into... But the photos throughout the shop will inform you of that history if you are so interested when you visit. read more

This place has character not found in Starbucks and other chains. This Saturday was my second experience waking up in Plainview. We have been traveling there once a month for my husband's grad program. I have discovered things about myself while waking up in Plainview. I become a water hog and abandon all water conservation literature I used to spout when met with the prosepect of unlimited hot water in the hotel shower. I do not like hotel breakfasts- not even the yogurt. I like that it is only 7:45 when we leave the hotel and it is as if we are the only people stirring. I have to have a caffeine IV to liven up enoough to begin studying while my husband is in his class. AND it is infuriating that there is not a place to get a decent (I mean drinkable) cup of coffee before 9 AM!!!!!! I mean it makes me absolutely IRATE! SO, I drive around and explore Plainview's east side. And then it is 8:15. So I park in front of the only coffee shop and pull out my boook and wait. and wait. and I see three other cars stop, look at the hours on the door and leave. but I wait. and wait. Finally, the clock strikes 9 and I go in. I ordered a mocha with an extra shot in my own cup. They use Ghiradelli chocolate, which was nice. The espresso was a bit over extracted (as my husband has taught me), but the milk was adequately heated and it all went together very nicely. I decided to hang out for a bit with my book and thoroughly enjoed the atmosphere. The place is nicely appointed in coffee house hip decor, vintage sofas, diner booths, large black and white framed photos of the town and hollywood glam chandeliers. But the jazz on the radio was what kept me there. It was perfectly comfortable. Oh and the jalepeno kolache was okay. Next time, I am going for a scone. read more

I basically grew up in Plainview and was a frequent patron of your predecessor, the "Quick Lunch" back into the 1960s through the 1970s. During August of 2011 my Japanese wife and I traveled back in Plainview (from southern California) to visit relatives in the area and also to avail her of the chance to "see the sites" (from my younger days), a process that took us downtown and to the Broadway Brew. Now, this was not only her first trip to the Broadway Brew but also my own. We both were delighted by the décor, the atmosphere and especially the java and lunchtime food we tried. The Brew is my favorite coffee shop I've ever been to. I started out as a regular customer during college, eventually becoming an employee. Now that I've moved off, other coffee shops don't compare. It's always a homecoming to visit the Brew. The coffee is of the highest quality. The drip is strong and bursting with flavor (especially if you order a French Press!). The lattes beat 95% of the other coffee shops around because they train the employees to actually steam the milk correctly. It's not dry foam or overcooked milk like they serve at Starbucks or other chain coffee shops. On that note, (if you really love coffee) try a traditional cappuccino at the Brew to see how truly wrong Starbucks does a cappuccino. They also have great breakfasts, lunches, art, and live music. This will always remain one of my favorite coffee shops out there. read more

The library is a great idea. Nobody under the age of 18 without a parent in that room is good, because people under 18 are generally annoying to see, hear or be around. Not all of you, but definitely the majority. Case in point: As I type this, there are 3 under 18's in the library, one is supine on the couch as his girlfriend (?) is sitting on his crotch, while the other reclines back in the comfy chairs saying empty apathetic teenager things. Now they're literally playing peek a boo as one hides behind the chair. Enforce your policy cafe, make sure that the employees are on top of it. This review gets a 2 star boost if I don't see these teens using the library portion as an unsupervised playground to tongue kiss and act like children again in the next two weeks. read more
