They have competitions on their website to win free lots of meat. Also, they have a Twitter page. I'm in awe. Most people however just know them as the king of butchers in this area for their locally produced/ sourced meat such as High Peak Lamb. This is how butchers should be and I hope their grand digital aspirations do not cloud this noble mission. They have gone the way of most forward thinking butchers and also provide small lunchtime meals - from salads and cold meat sandwiches to hot snacks like their pies. Another fine local business institution - a proper butchers shop with 3-4 different counter areas selling everything from meats to pies, fresh bakery bread and supplies to keep you going such as chutneys and jams. Now I'm the sort of the guy that come even a hint of chilliness in the air has to revert to Sunday lunch being 'Full English Roast' time and now we're into mid October a juicy piece of beef of pork was on my shopping list! I was impressed that at Mettrick's there were so many options in terms of what you could buy with me performing a full 180 and going for some oxtail for (1kg was £8 Oct 2014) a stew (my half made up West Indian oxtail slow cooked stew was awesome by the way...) The staff were friendly, said they could pretty much order anything I ever wanted in which was really refreshing in this day and age of cheap supermarket meat. A definite winner - hopefully I'll be picking up some bacon and burgers next time I'm in town!

Never had a bad cut of meat from here, (unlike the supermarket) very reasonable prices and no rubbish. They will cut you any size of joint, score the pork correctly, make there own sausages, cut you a crown, anything. You cant get that in a supermarket either. The meat is always fresh and the shop is kept prestine whenever you call in. In summer they do fresh bbq packs and all the trimmings, at Christmas they do the best pork and turkey I have ever tasted all localy produced meat. The guys in here are great, if they see you ones they will always say hello.

Lords of Middleton is a family butchers in my hometown of Middleton, in Greater Manchester, it is a…read moresmall butchers which has been in the town for generations, as I recall this was even here when Queen Victoria was Queen of England, which certainly is a long time ago as since then we've seen the longest serving monarch die and get another King (well four of them), and then his replacement become the new longest serving monarch in this country. This butchers is quite nice and for me stands out in terms of quality, although inside it feels a little small and squashed they do have a good selection of meat from cooked meat to chicken to sausages. They do also have gluten free sausages which they make on request, they are quite nice and it tastes like a good sausage in terms of quality, with a lack of fat too. One of my main issues here is the price, it is expensive but still you have got to pay that for the quality, but still I can't help but feel some items are a little pricey. The gluten free sausages are some of the best I've had, I normally ask for mine with extra herbs and black pepper, and they both taste and look fresh, with gluten free food normally not taking as nice, Lords do it on a whole new level to make it seem like a sausage which did contain gluten, but they are gluten free. The location is decent, yet it is slightly hidden towards the back/end of Middleton Gardens, opposite Wetherspoons in such a small spot, perhaps a bigger place to allow more customers to move about and to show their great range of products in a better manner might be something Lords should look to in the future. I'm struggling rating this place, on one hand I want to give a high rating as they probably do the best gluten free sausages I have tasted, but on another I feel certain issues with the room inside the shop and pricing mean it deserves a slightly lower rating, and because of this I feel Lords of Middleton for now deserve a very high three star rating, but I hope to move towards a four in the near future

That means that I am loath to rely on the anaemic slabs of water-pumped, antibiotic-addicted chicken that line the fridges of Messrs Tesco and Saino. Yeah, I'll use them if they're going to be smothered and pulverised in a slow-cooked stew or curry. But if I'm braising a lamb shank or searing a fillet steak, I want quality. Axons, my friends, is quality. There's no denying it. Back when I lived in ye olde Didsy-B, I would scrape my pennies and every now and then I'd pop to Axons and treat myself to a particularly plump breast of corn-fed chicken, or a devastatingly juicy sirloin. The venison on offer here (seasonably, obvio) is truly incredible. Dense, dark and just that right amount of dank pungency. I honestly haven't had venison that good since I ate at a weird hunting lodge in teh Czech Republic. I am actually salivating right now, imagining that meat. The meat here is obviously more expensive than at the supermarket, but not prohibitively so. Expect to pay about a quid more for your workaday meats such as mince, but seeing as their mince has less fat and crap in it, you're getting about twice as much real meat. When it comes to meat, you get what you pay for, so please pay for the good stuff. Your tummy will thank you (even if Bambi doesn't...)

Live a little! The majority of the produce sold comes from the Greeleys home farm, where they breed and rear a lot of their own animals. It does get busy during lunch time, but there are always plenty of staff serving so the queues don't last long. They also cater for outside events where they can provide a full spit roast pig etc!
