As an avid wine enthusiast, I bristle at being misled by salespeople in boutique wine shops. My sole purpose for going to such small shops is to buy better wines, not commonly available in large chains; plus, and equally important is the recommendation from what I expect to be a knowledgeable salesperson. In short, someone who knows wine and is familiar with their store's inventory. Unfortunately, after two shopping experiences at Brix Wine and Spirits in the south end of Boston, I was not only misled but I am left wondering about how much the people who waited on me know about the wines they sell. One purchase involved a bottle of Cava, one of my favorite sparkling wines from Spain. Although I specifically asked for a "Cava", I was offered a $31.00 bottle of sparkling wine from Spain that was NOT CAVA. Fortunately, I checked the label and rejected the salesperson's offering and purchased a $17.00 bottle of REAL Cava from an adjacent shelf. The other instance is equally troublesome. I asked for a "decent" bottle of Cote du Rhone, which meant that I wanted something a little bit better that the ordinary. In making such a request, I am relying upon the salesperson's knowledge of the wines in their store. Sadly, after checking the internet about my purchase of the AOC "Cote du Rhone Villages" I discovered that this AOC denotes a lesser quality of Cote du Rhone. All of which begs the question: If I cannot rely upon the recommendation of a salesperson in a boutique wine shop, why would I continue to shop there? As such, these will be my last experiences at Brix Wine and Spirits in the south end of Boston. read more

Great experience! Knowledgeable, attentive staff and the wine was delicious! Definitely worth stopping in to get unique options from people that certainly know what they are doing. This place is very pleasant, handsomely laid out and for me has a very good variety of 'non-mainstream wines' the buyer definitely knows what they are doing. I go to BRIX regularly. It's a very good store with a great selection given their small space. I agree they don't have the best prices but there are other places to go for that. When we are having a big party we usually buy in those large discount places. But if you want a bottle or two of something it's hard to beat BRIX. I agree with some here that their wine tastings should probably be called "vendor showcases" which is a more apt description. That being said I think if they have some expertise they could have more "real" tastings that showcases a variety of their wines in a given category. read more

I only like it because it's here. There are only a handful of places to buy wine here in Boston without getting completely ripped off. I do like the style of this place, and they have all price ranges of wine to choose from. Not a HUGE selection, but space is money here in good ol' Boston. You know what drives me nuts? Their free "wine tastings" every week which ARE. NOT. WINE. SOME of their wine tastings are wine - but sometimes you will go in and it's really just a represenative pushing a new liquor you've never heard of. It's like being sucked into a mini infomercial. A great wine store - if you are looking to spend a decent amount of money. I've been going here for about a year now and I've noticed the prices of the wines have steadily increased. I thought it might have just been the caliber of the wine, but I've found identical bottles at other local stores for a lot less money. I've also found that the service has been decreasing at this place. I get the sense that the staff is starting to cater to big buyers and consistent high paying customers. They do have some great, hard to find wines, and some interesting tastings, but it doesn't always seem worth the price you are paying. read more

Being a pretty frequent customer of the Broad St BRIX, I was surprised to be treated a bit poorly at the South End location. I stopped by for a wine tasting and to pick up a few bottles and was given some pretty harsh attitude. A young guy walking into the store with a gym bag over his shoulder might not scream "serve me" but it doesn't mean ignore him and refuse to let him put his bag down to grab the wine he came for. I've really liked what BRIX has tried to do and for a while I thought the emails with specials and announcements were great. It's gotten to the point where it's silly. Latest email: "$55 Pinot Noir for $30... Really!" I open it up, intrigued, and see a rave review of a wine bursting with flavor which they will take advance orders of at the special price of $29.99. I take a look around and find a few other stores selling this for $22 - $24. How is $29.99 a "special price"? read more

You are contimplating what to get, but you don't really know much about wine... much less AFFORDABLE wine... What is a boy to do? Pop into Brix, obviously. Sure, they have a great wine and liquor selection, but no amount of good alcohol warrants condescending service. I really think this applies to one or two employees in particular, but I hope something does something about it. I've been in here several times, sometimes perusing and something purchasing. Brix is beautiful. The lighting, the shelves, the floor. The store is very inviting, the employees maybe not quite as much, but they are very helpful. Just a touch snooty. A few times I have come in asking for a little advice on wine and the employees always offer awesome suggestions once I ask. For Christmas, my department collected money to buy some booze for our bosses, so I went to Brix looking for a cabernet and a tequila to fit into a $50 budget. The gal working at the time helped me pick out my gifts and didn't judge my budget, then packed the bottles into bags with tissue paper. The lady working upsold me in a second by saying that my t-shirt reminded her of a bottle label. Done. Mostly wine, but they do have some beer in the back left corner. The people working seem to know their stuff (I saw her help other people while I looked around). I want to give it 4 stars at it all seemed a bit much for a liquor store (that IS what it is), but it does focus on wine AND it is in the south end, so it is what it is and it's beautiful inside. Love this place! Stopped by Saturday afternoon for a wine tasting. The guy pouring the wine was extremely friendly and knowledgable. They were sampling 4 wines and he gave us 4 very healthy pours, for a free tasting. He even suggested we could help ourselves to more but we were pressed for time. We ended up buying one of the wines they were sampling that day and purchased two other bottles. This is definitely going to be my new favorite place to buy wine. Friendly, unprentetious & helpful! Sheer knowledge of all things booze gets these guys 5 stars alone. Don't go to Brix expecting to pick up some Yellowtail and Absolut. This place is definitely high-class, and I don't think I spotted a bottle of wine for under $18. But they are AMAZING at selecting THE perfect wine for you. Also, they carry lots of incredible-though-obscure liquor such as some alcoholic potion infused with elderflower. I know. And believe it or not, they were sold out! read more

What's not to love about Brix? Probably the most knowledgeable staff around. Great wines that you don't find elsewhere. Prices are fine (not cheap, but not ridiculous) and I love that they support small vintners. And let's not even talk about the scotch!! I just went there for the first time today to purchase the Infusion Diabolique Bourbon. It's the only place in Boston that sells this local bourbon infusion and even though it's a bit out of the way it's still worth the travel. The staff there seemed a bit pretentious from how they were acting towards the other customers but what'd I expect... it's the South End. I stopped in with the hubby at Brix for a wine tasting last winter and wasn't ultra-impressed. First, when we walked in, none of the staff said hello to us or even approached us after 5-10 minutes of us looking around at their selection. I guess they didn't want to bother us unless we asked a question. Second, the wine tasting started late but that wasn't so bad. The theme was Spanish and South American wines so they served empanadas, which was a cute touch. But they didn't know what was inside them, which was a bit annoying for a vegetarian like me. Third, and this was the worst part, the guy running the tasting and pouring the wines seemed condescending to me. When the hubby and I would express opinions about the wines we were tasting, he would disagree and in effect tell us that we were wrong. Insulting a customer's opinions doesn't seem like the best way to get us to buy wine. If we hadn't experienced all the annoying things listed above, we probably would've bought some wine. But we left empty-handed and won't be going back. read more

I was going to let this go, and not write a review, having decided a while ago that, for me, Brix simply isn't the kind of business I want to patronize when there are others behaving more decently (even if the others aren't as convenient, as Brix is right next door.) But I feel the need to, as a warning, and I want to do it as well on behalf of my friend, whose purchase of a gift certificate from them definitely DID NOT have the intended effect. As I say, we live next door, and began going to Brix as soon as they opened. The owners/staff were never warm and fuzzy, but the wine selection was good for a relatively small shop, even if not in price range. A good friend and colleague (I had a business in the area, too) got me a gift certificate one year as a birthday gift. It took me two years to actually think to take the gift certificate with me and redeem it -- I just was always going on my way to or from something and didn't have it with me. They gave me such attitude, and at first weren't going to accept it, and after having to talk to both owners and the original staffer who looked at me like I had two heads, I finally got out of there (of course, having spent more than the value of the gift certificate) because one owner said to the other "Just take it so he'll go." It was baffling. Out the window went the modicum of friendliness they had mustered up because we were regulars, it made no sense too because they put no expiration date on it to begin with, and they had zero interest in the law around such things in Massachusetts. They were just pissed that I was redeeming something they probably spent the incoming cash on long ago. Way to ruin a birthday present, Brix. Seriously, do what you want for your own wine needs, but don't do that to a friend and in the process completely derail your best efforts to give a thoughtful gift. I had my first visit to Brix this weekend and found it to be a great experience. I had selected a list of wines online through Wine Spectator and Crush that I had hoped to purchase. Although Brix didn't carry every bottle, the staff was very willing to work with me and find close substitutes and even order a particular wine that they didn't have in stock. I love the feeling of the interior and that they have free delivery for orders over a certain size. Sure beats the Wine Emporium on Tremont - sleek modern interior vs. dark and smelly basement is worth any extra pennies you might spend at Brix. read more

They held a wine tasting/book signing featuring wines paired in our cookbook, One Dish - Four Seasons, and we fell in love with the store. I'm fairly convinced this is the best wine shop in town. Not the cheapest, mind you (though most of their inventory is ~$20), but the best. They don't have an overwhelming inventory, but the staff really knows it well. You can go in there and tell them you're making osso bucco, and they'll be able to recommend 5 good bottles on the spot. Very dissapointed. Like another reviewer, I come here because it is convenient. But, the prices are stiff, and the quality of offerings is highly variable. Brix is yet another in a line of "new style" wine shops, like Vinodivino and Best Cellars, that sells a range of wine brands not generally available from larger distributors. And that has its pitfalls. In the case of Brix, it has typically been a good thing. But, I was sold a chardonnay the other day - PIcket Fence - whose nearest competition is three-buck-chuck from Trader Joe. The difference is that I paid @ $20 a bottle for what is - essentially - cooking wine. Very, very disappointed, indeed! read more

I've been told that one thing you need in life is a good mechanic. Well, I'm not much of a driver, but I am a heck of a drinker. So, I say you need a good wine store. Brix is that wine store. Only thing is, they're a great wine store. Why? Three reasons: 1) Every wine they stock is good. You cannot go wrong with a bottle you pick up at Brix. 2) They give amazing liquor recommendations. I joke that I have my husband fooled -- he thinks I have flawless taste in choosing whiskeys. Truth is, I just go to Brix and ask. 3) They are happy to special order for you. I've actually got a fourth and a fifth reason: 4) They have great tastings; and 5) They have very affordable wines and are perfectly willing to give you recommendations that are less expensive than what you are willing to spend, even. Also, a story: I carefully researched a wine that I wanted to buy as a gift. I checked out wine rankings and wanted to get a very specific wine as a gift. Well, I went to Brix and I was tired, cold, and just didn't care anymore. So, I asked for a recommendation. They suggested two wines: one was less expensive than what I was planning to pay with my well-researched bottle and one was spot on. I bought the spot on one -- got home, looked at my notes: they had recommended the wine that I had carefully researched. The exact wine. They are awesome. Go here. read more

I have only been there once - so perhaps I need to patron there a few more times to make a decent judgment - the decor, a floor to celling exhibit of wines, could be intimidating but also a wonder of exploration for an aficionado. I purchased 8 bottles of wine - one a recommendation for my request of a Burgundy-like wine - and a six-pack of summer wines. The six-pack, for its price, did not match my expectations - in fact, I grimaced at one or two of them, but the rose wines in the pack were very nice. I was also disappointed at the recommended wine, but I might not have made myself clear enough in my request. When it comes to wine shops, Brix gets it right. It's a great space and when you walk in, the walls on either side of you are floor to ceiling plastered with a variety of wines. There's even more in the middle, including recommendations by the staff. And speaking of the staff, they know there stuff! My friend went to an event where they were serving wine from Brix, and they not only remembered what she was talking about, but they could look it up on the database just to be sure! They also have some cool liquors set up at what looks like a "bar" in the back, but it's actually the check out counter. The best part? Something for everyone. Brix is absolutely gorgeous. I love, love, LOVE the space and setup of this wine shop. If I could make my living room look like Brix, I'd be happy. And I'd be a wine-o. I wasn't overly thrilled by the service I received in here (she seemed a little too know-it-all and made me feel inadequate) but I appreciated how she gave me a tour of the store and helped me find what I was looking for. The prices? Well, if I were super rich I'd shop here. For now I'll be shopping here on special occasions and getting my wine at the Emporium or at Georgiana's because Brix breaks the bank a bit. Such a convenient location that it just can't be avoided. The wines are consistently good and you can find ones that are fairly priced. I usually go here when I'm in a rush and finding a bottle of wine quickly is really easy. Especially when you have what you want in mind. Interesting selections and store design, BUT.. the last 2 visits left a sour taste in my mouth. On this last occasion, a wine I had purchased here had very obviously started refermenting in the bottle - the cork came off with a lot of pressure, releasing gas - not a good sign. Just because I'm a wine guy, I tasted it anyway, to confirm that this was a referment, and the amount of dissolved gas in the wine confirmed it. Upon bringing the bottle back, the guy behind the counter refused to acknowledge that there was anything wrong with the wine, even though i explained to him that it had clearly started to referment, saying "this is the nature of the mencia grape". (Apparently the mencia grape will be bottled under 3 atmospheres of pressure and taste horrible, with a ton of dissolved gas) When I asked him to take a taste and see what I was referring to, he refused but eventually, begrudgingly agreed to give me credit, but still added "these wines undergo carbonic maceration, so the gas is normal". Really? Can his managers please provide the staff here with vinification 101? Carbonic maceration causes effervescence in a still wine ? that's your excuse for not wanting to credit a bad bottle to a repeat customer? Well, repeat no more. No amount of fancy shelving can make up for the combination of bad attitude and plain disinformation. read more

Beware...,prices maybe extremely inflated. Recently I was looking for a gift and decided to buy a high end bottle of Champagne. The sales person appeared very knowledgeable and I trusted her, unfortunately a big mistake. The gift was well received but later I looked up the Champagne on line and I could have purchased the bottle for less than half what I paid for it at Brix. This would have saved me over $100. Very disappointing...I should have done my own research before purchasing the Champagne , but fell into the trap of trusting the sales person. read more

How can you not love the Brix Chix and Andrew! I discovered Brix a year ago after they were featered in the Improper's Best of... Carrie and Claudia (the Brix Chix) are like bubbly bottles of Proseco and are so excited to share with you their latest pick. In addition, the mailing list is a must. Almost every Friday they have an in-house tasting from 6-8pm with an informative somalier or distributor that are free. Another great example of the great neighborhood feel the south end offers. They also have more formal tastings every 4-6 week for a fee and worth every penny! The spirit of the night, be it wine, vodka, whiskey or bubblies is always perfectly paired with a little bite. Bring a pen and pad of paper...the wino within will be totally overloaded! Cheers! read more

I like Brix. Their biggest draw, for me, is their six pack o' wine. They come up with a new one every month, it usually has a theme and, if I remember correctly, it's usually about $70. I've never had a bottle that I didn't like in one of these "value-packs". Keep in mind, though, that if you find a bottle you like in one of these 6-packs, you can't purchase it on it's own until the monthly promotion is over. They also rotate their stock quite frequently so a bottle you loved that you purchased there a few weeks back may never be in stock at Brix again. It's refreshing but can be frustrating for some who aren't interested in experimenting (I am, so it doesn't bother me). Lastly, I think this place is pricey. I've gotten the same bottle of wine at Liquorland for 20% less. I keep going back though! read more

Stopped into this quaint nice little shop in order to pickup a couple good bottles for a seder I was attending. The layout was a bit confusing, but i was greeted by a nice woman who explained the layout. They had some unique and interesting bottles, the prices are slightly higher, but the service and staff were very personable. Not a place I'd come to buy 15 bottles of wine, but a good spot to grab a nice bottle for a party or a nice dinner at home if you are local. I noticed this was a mini chain in the area. read more
