WINE UP I wanted to grab a couple bottles of wine for my hotel room. I first went to the Trader Joe's down the street. It was really small and carried no wine at all. Shame on you Trader Joe! I then decided to check out the neighborhood and found this cute place. I loved how the store was visible from the street and down a staircase. The degree of difficulty was awesome, if you had pre-cocktail'd! I recommend you use the hand rail going down. Ha! When I walked in, the two guys behind the counter were very friendly. I wasn't sure if they were always like that or just seeing if my intentions were to really shop. Hey it's Boston and tnese guys don't take any chances. I walked around the store to check out the selection. One guy followed me to the back of the store. He asked if I needed help. Yeah they still had their eye on me. Ha! Near the front door, there were a few shelves of discounted wines. This was a great deal. Buy two two bottles, mix and match varieties for only $13. That's a great deal considering Eataly across the street can't touch that price. I found two fantastic white wines. One was from Yugoslavia. It was really good. I had no idea Yugoslavia make wine. I thought they only made that little car called the Yugo. Where's the Yugo? Personally I'd stick to making wine over cars. I would totally buy this wine again. The store had a ton of foot traffic. I loved how the taxes were all built into the prices of the alcohol. There a single beer cooler in the back where you can select beers from the broken cases. They have signs about not breaking six packs in the fridge. That's so old school. In the old days you could always break six packs but don't do it here. You've been warned. This is a great stop to stock up your hotel room with cheers, especially if you're working at the convention center. Don't pay the high prices of the hotels. I got two bottles for less then one glass of wine. Now that's a deal. Thanks for wining me up in Boston. read more

Bauer is my go to wine store! They've got a pretty complete wine and liquor selection, some craft beers. They carry local products too. While the wine selection seems sort of small, I've gotten anything from a German Riesling to a Spanish Rioja to some Australian wines and they're all great. I also believe there are wine tastings on Fridays. But overall, great recommendations, reasonably priced, cean and organized. If that isn't enough to convince you....they have a cat! read more

Staff is very friendly and accommodating. They can find you anything you may be interested in. If they don't have it, they will make every effort to get it. A nice little addition is the store cat. The first time I set foot in Bauer, about five months ago, there was a cat inside. I knew immediately I was a fan of the place. I've been back pretty much every Friday to pick up beers for my office's weekly team meetings, and the selection is wonderful. They regularly have new offerings that the staff are excited to tell me about, from Finback and Mikkeller to Night Shift and Kent Falls. They've also recently had Sip of Sunshine on offer! For the hop-averse, Bauer carries a wide array of ciders; the last one we tried was strawberry basil. And for the commitment phobic, they provide single cans for purchase at the front of the store. The liquor and wine selection is decent, with some fun surprises. A couple visits back, a co-worker and I happened upon some beautiful mini prosecco bottles for $4 that we snapped up for a special occasion. If you're in the neighborhood, I highly recommend popping in. read more

I can't believe I did not initially give Bauer's 5 stars. Bauer's is awesome. They are small but mighty. Crammed into this tiny store is a fantastic selection of wine across a range of price points, a great variety of interesting craft beers, and a well-curated collection of liquors. Combine that with frequent tastings, an adorable store kitty, and fantastic service, and Bauer's is clearly a 5 star establishment. OH! And also! They deliver! So apparently in Massachusetts, you can't get alcohol from a grocery store or convenience store. You actually have to go to a liquor store. Who knew? I found this to be terribly inconvenient. But we were pointed here after going to several stores and not finding any liquor in them. They have so many different kinds. The selection is way better than any grocery store. Prior to a recent bad experience I probably would have given Bauer 3 stars. They are expensive but well located and easy. A couple of weeks ago my boyfriend was searching for a limited edition beer: Founder's Kentucky Breakfast Stout, My boyfriend had called the distributor and was given a list of liquor stores that were getting the beer. He called Bauer, which was on the list, and they lied to him saying they weren't getting it. When he called them out on it they snootily said "Not gonna happen. We're holding it for our regular customers." Not customers who had reserved it, even. Which might have been fine if he were polite... but he wasn't. This place will not be getting any more of my business. read more

Ok. I normally don't review shops but Bauer was so good I had to. I was very impressed by the level of professionalism and the knowledge of the guys who work here. I was looking to send a birthday gift to a friend who is a very knowledgable about wine. John suggested that I put together a gift package that included a bucket to chill the wines in (Bauer's version of the traditional gift basket). I chose the large version and put in 3 different wines that we chose together. That is what impressed me. I know what my friend likes and John listened, made suggestions and gave me several options in the price I wanted to spend for each wine. It was perfect. I called, they delivered my gift that was beautifully packaged with a note wishing my friend a happy birthday, and I'm happy. They emailed me a receipt after the fact as well. Very classy looking liquor store. Friendly but not annoyingly so guys working there, a large selection of wines, beer, and hard liquor. Also they sell cans of soda for 75 cents which is pretty nice for a hot day on Newbury Street. Check out the beautiful mural they have painted at the bottom of the stairs before you enter the front door. See the little grey cat? Well there is a real one at the front door too so don't trip over it while admiring the art work. read more

This place makes me happy. And no, not just because they're selling me alcohol, though that helps too. It makes me happy because it's got everything despite the small size, it's beautifully clean and nicely decorated, and it has both friendly sales staff and a friendly cat. The staff has helped me with some odd requests ("I need a bottle of wine with a really funny name that still tastes good enough for me to bring to work"). The prices are surprisingly good as well: I never would have thought that this lovely little Newbury St shop would be cheaper (by a wide margin) than the slightly-closer-to-me but infinitely grungier mini mart frequented by the MIT frats. But I did a price comparison one day, and Bauer is definitely cheaper! I'm also looking forward to trying the free delivery when I stock up for a party soon. read more

To be completely honest, I have never purchased a bottle of wine or liquor at Bauer. However, I have purchased many bottles of craft beer from their fine selection. Bauer by far has the best beer selection in the Back Bay, making it a reliable stop for some interesting brews. When you drink a lot of craft beer, it is easy to run out of interesting options when it is time to restock your refrigerator but, Bauer keeps things interesting for me by always having a beer I haven't seen or the newest brews from my favorite breweries. I also like that they keep a good stock from local breweries which many stores pass over. The staff is always friendly and knowledgeable about their beer selection and several times they have helped me locate an unusual beer. I recommend Bauer to every craft beer lover! read more

They have a truly eclectic selection of wines and beers that are constantly changing. Overall, as a wine store that has spirits and a few craft beers this was a welcome surprise on Newbury. Friendly service and cute location/atmosphere makes it easy to remember. My only negative was that the craft beer selection was quite limited and omitted several very popular breweries (such as Founder's), among others. Employees did not seem knowledgeable about craft beer, did not know about several popular names, and politely informed me that if I don't see it then they don't carry it. This is one of my favorite liquor stores in Boston and not because they let us host our beer tastings there. The staff is incredibly nice and they really go out of their way to stock quality beer. The only downside to this store is that it is a little small so the selection at a given time might not be as large as some other stores. At the same time that's one of the reasons I love it. They do a great job of swapping out new beers each week. Every week I go in I find something new to buy. Not only that but they will gladly order something new for you if you ask. We live in the Back Bay because we love having great local businesses at our fingertips. Bauer is my go to package store. They have everything from great exotic wines to my husbands favorite beers. The entire staff is friendly and helpful and I love that Howie the owner is always present. The best part? They deliver!!! I have read that they may be a bit more expensive but when you factor in time, convenience, and the friendly local feel I think every penny is well spent. The prices are fair especially considering the location right on Newbury St. The staff are helpful and friendly. I also like that they regularly have tastings of wine, beer and alcohols. Awesome store, perfect for wine and beer delivery in downtown Boston. We went to Bauer for an office party and they were very easy to work with. They helped us pick out a good selection of wine (on sale = we got twice as much!), packed it up, and set it aside for free delivery the next day. They showed up on time and everything was in good shape. I suggest going in person so you can see their sales and pick out booze for yourself, but you can also order the phone if needed. read more

I went here strictly to check out their beer selection based on what I read. I was pretty disappointed. A jaunt to pick up a pair of jeans at Diesel (total name dropping, what a douche) turned into a beer status run. I figured they'd a least have a better selection then the Wine Emporium in the South End, but they really don't Perhaps I am spoiled, I used to live in Phoenix for a short time, (no means a beer city) and had access to 3 stores in 10 miles that had amazing selections. I've been to about 4 places in Boston and still can't find even close to the selection I found out west. I am hoping to find a beer store that satisfies my cravings for west coast, Belgian, and unique beers from the east coast and Midwest soon. I am a bit tired of seeing Magic Hat, Tremont, Harpoon's, Sam's, and Brooklyn everywhere. Granted those are "local", they just aren't that good. I really think the West Coast (including Colorado, and New Mexico) would destroy the East Coast in a Battle for the Better Beer Selection. I am sad to say I may have to drive all the way to Cambridge or Brighton to find my precious Beer. I guess a man has to do what a man has to do. read more

I'm a big fan of stopping in here whenever I'm in the area. While they carry more wine than beer, the beer they do carry is top-notch, diverse and appealing to a wide range of palettes. The prices are pretty reasonable too. You can find yourself a $1.88 stray bottle to pick up or a more pricey winter saison you've wanted to try but couldn't find... until now. Love this place. Right around the corner they have a nice selection of all over the country domestic wines. Their spirits are limited but they try to source as many as they can. Went here for the first time on Monday after reading some Yelp reviews. Such a great find! It was a long walk for me to get there but beyond worth it! The man who helped me(for the life of me cant remember his name), was very helpful, super knowledgeable and a total sweetheart! Good selection of wines and beer. Really well organized. Searching for a good bottle of wine can be daunting otherwise! For the most part the beer and wine where priced well but the hard alcohol was a bit on the expensive side, but still cheaper than some other places I have been into. read more

The thing that I've discovered on yelp is that a lot of stuff like, liquor stores, are rated based on location and region. While I'm sure that this store is awesome for the Back Bay / Newbury area, it's really just plain "ok" when compared what liquor stores should/could be. We popped in to grab some wine for dinner and was happy to see that they carry Cambria -- since we used to belong to their wine club but can no longer due to that MA doesn't allow shipments of alcohol... but anyway, that's something separate altogether. In any case, we were able to find some decent wines and they were friendly and helpful enough, but as far as being a "really awesome" liquor store, it's really just ok. read more

I am staying in the area and stopped into this great little shop on Newbury Street for some wine. They have a nice selection, good prices, and very knowledgable and friendly staff.
