Gist's wine selection is impressive, and the owner is actually a sommelier which is not usually the case at a small wine shop (especially outside of major U.S. cities). They came in an Italian sausage sauce, thicker than your typical white wine broth, unlike anything I've ever had with mussels before. A little salty, but the mussels themselves were good quality and it came with bread for dipping. For the main, I had the rigatoni with chicken, which had a somewhat similar sauce with great flavors. Both dishes showed some real creativity in the kitchen. But what really sets R Wine Bar & Kitchen apart is the environment. This place has a vibe. I ended up meeting some cool people traveling through from Tennessee and had some of the best conversations I've had at a bar. Really friendly people all around. That kind of atmosphere can't be manufactured. The Verdict: R Wine Bar & Kitchen is the real deal. One of the highlights of the evening was learning about the building's history and hearing about the upcoming live music that performs downstairs in the cozy speakeasy. Overall, this was one of the most disappointing dining experiences we've had. For a restaurant at this price point, we expected much better food and better communication among the staff.
