Shortly after I first moved to Edmonton back in 2004 I remember reading an article about a fish & chips shop (or chippie, if you will) in town. I remember thinking that the food and authenticity of the experience sounded amazing and I couldn't wait to try it. As someone who hadn't traveled much at that point and had certainly never been to England, I was so curious to try a real version of fish & chips. That restaurant was Brits Fish & Chips and I have been enjoying them ever since. (I have also now been to England twice.) The original location opened in Coronet Addition Industrial, which is the opposite of a flashy part of town, although they have since opened a second location downtown. However, I only ever visit the OG restaurant, which I feel a strong loyalty toward. VUE Weekly voted Brits #1 Best Fish & Chips 2018 and Edmonton Journal awarded them Best Fish & Chips Restaurant 2020 and Best Fish & Chips Restaurant 2021. After all these years, they're still quite possibly the best place to get fish & chips in the city. Pulling into the parking lot, you'll notice their recognizable logo and signage immediately. (It's kinda hard to miss a fish with a mustache and a monocle.) Walking through the doors, you are met with the most glorious aromas of fried fish, salt, and vinegar. The space is meant to look a lot like a chippie in the UK, with wooden beams, murals of old-timey men fishing on the River Thames, and my personal favourite; posters of old Mersey Beat covers featuring The Beatles on the walls. Normally the music playing is also exclusively The Beatles, however on my recent Saturday evening visit this wasn't the case. The atmosphere is warm and casual, certainly not bothered with too much flash. The first thing to do upon entering is to approach the counter on the right. This is where your order gets placed and where you're able to gaze over the chalkboard menu. Not much has changed since my first visit 18 years ago and it's nice to see that the classics have remained the same. Obviously they serve fish & chips - they have six different types of fish to choose from. But they've also got traditional English pies and other specialty items like Cornish pasties, battered sausage, and haggis. You don't have to search long for a truly authentic UK experience. But also deep fried pizza?! I like to start by hitting up the coolers and checking out what sorts of imported sodas are on hand. There's usually tons of Irn-Bru ($3.76) available, the pop beverage of choice in Scotland. Described as having a fruity cola taste, I find that it tastes a bit like a cream soda. It's bright orange in colour and a fun treat when looking for the right beverage pairing for fish & chips. Once ordered, you get to stroll into the dining room to seat yourself wherever you want. The food usually doesn't take very long and a friendly staff member will deliver it right to your table. I've been ordering the exact same thing from Brits for a long, long time. It has always gotta be The Works (2 cod, 2 haddock, 2 chips, 2 sides, onion rings - $41.50). If you're sharing with other person, this is the way to go. You'll get everything that you need for an excellent, well-rounded experience. When this heaping mountain of golden-brown deliciousness gets placed before you, you will know that you are in for something special. Unfortunately, they aren't allowed to wrap the fish in newsprint like they do in England but their cute checkerboard paper is a nice alternative. There are six sides to choose from which include; mushy peas, gravy, homestyle coleslaw, sliced bread and butter, sweet curry sauce, and a pickled egg. I always go for the coleslaw (to get something "vegetable" into the mix) and I can ever say no to a pickled egg. Other very important components for a great fish & chips experience include; salt and copious amounts of malt vinegar on the chips (and maybe some ketchup on the side), a squeeze of lemon over the fish, and plenty of housemade tartar sauce for dipping. Once everything is dressed up to perfection it's time to dig in! Starting with the HUGE pieces of fish, the quality and expertise is evident. Fried in an imported deep-fat fryer, the batter is the most ideal example of golden and crispy, however it isn't too much. Inside you'll find gorgeously moist white fish. The cod is super meaty and it feels like you get a whole lot of fish within each piece. The haddock is very juicy and flavourful, providing a bit of a different fish journey. Both are wonderful in their own way, so having one of each is a great combination. One thing that I've noticed is that in England they leave the skin on the fish and we don't do this in Canada. I'm assuming that this comes down to a presumed regional preference. But let's just talk about the tartar sauce at Brits for one moment because I'm fairly certain that it's the absolute best in the city. First of all, they give you a massive squeeze bottle of the stuff on your table - it's unlimited a

    Deep Fried Oysters

Starting off with an order of deep fried oysters, they came out piping hot and perfectly fried to a beautiful golden colour. The batter was nicely seasoned with a nice crunch. The fish was amazing here from start to finish. Again much like the oysters they came out fried perfectly with a great consistency and flavour. they also give you a nice wide selection of fishes to choose from. Even though they were all fried dishes, it didn't feel overly greasy. The side coleslaw was nice and crunchy for a good contrast in texture and seasoned and dressed well. The gravy was a little thinner but with good flavour. So depending on your personal preferences you may like this or not. The sweet curry sauce almost tasted like some Japanese curries and was an interesting alternative to the house tartar sauce which was good as well. I haven't had mushy peas in recent memory so I don't have much to compare with but they were a nice side to try. On a side note, the draught beer was a little warmer than usual so I assume this was done "British style" so if you're expecting an ice cold beer this might not be your cup of tea. But with that said the beer selection on tap was a nice selection and tasted fine a touch warmer. If you're looking for an ice cold beer they do have some canned beer as well. Definitely one of my favourite places to go to for fish & chips!

Wonder chill jazz music and smooth tempo music going on well sitting down to the biggest pieces of fish I can get in town. Not only are they the biggest pieces of fish in town but I find it to be the best tasting. There is a solid crisp that comes out costing the fish. It's just stunning. Probably takes the lemon juice about a solid 10min to soften the batter coating it's done so well. The fries are one of my favorite. They are so gawd damn crisp! They don't have an amazing amount of flavoring to them. Just a basic fry but I love it! You can cover them in ketchup resulting in the classic matchup done right. Done even need to add salt (personal option ‍) Hungry for lunch? Wanna show off to your homies with "I can eat so much order the 3 piece and try to finish it by yourself!! The prices seem to be unfair tell you get a basket packed full of fish and fries. Worth a stop! A medicated stop and I still struggled to get everything eaten. A good medicated stop as wel

    Clam chowder

The hubby and I finally decided on a dinner item, fish and chips. So, it was time to search the wonderful world of yelp for advice. This place seems to have a lot of good reviews, so here we were one Friday evening craving greasy comfort foods. It's a place where they take your order at the counter, and someone brings the food to you. You also grab your own drinks. Nothing too fancy. We ordered clam chowder, deep fried oysters, and sole and halibut fish and chips. The clam chowder tasted like they put too much parsley or thyme in it. It was very herby, which I didn't care for. The oysters were kind of bland, but the batter was light and crispy, which made me excited for the fish. The sole was very thin, and it felt like you were just eating the oily batter. But the halibut... wow... that was meaty and tasty! I had a side of coleslaw that tasted fresh and had just the right amount of mayo. It was 1pc and fries, one side, and a drink for $20. Seems reasonable. I really enjoyed that meal, but the others... not so much. Maybe I will come back again... just for the halibut

Menu - they do deep fried pizza!

You know that way when you get a craving for some greasy comfort food from back home in the UK? Well, I guess a lot of you here in Edmonton won't get that feeling, but I did. So I headed to Brits Fish and chips near my home to indulge myself. There are a few Brits locations in the city but I have to say this one is now my favourite, entirely due to this one thing. Pizza Crunch. Now, some of you may be wondering what a pizza crunch is, well in short it's amazing. Take a really cheap cheese pizza, batter it, then deep fry. Definitely not good for the arteries so I'd caution against eating one every day, but boy did it hit the spot. I was instantly taken back to my high school years in Scotland. Memories! As for the fish, I'm a fan of the cod, it always seems to be nicely cooked here. Chips (as always in Canada) aren't quite how I like them, always a little to thin cut and not that fluffy potato style that I like. But as that's a problem for all chip shops here I'll give Brits a pass. I enjoy the fact you can get pickled onions and mushy peas on the side, really adds to the experience. I'll for sure be back to tickle my pizza crunch itch on another day...

2 piece haddock meal with a side off mushy peas
    Kym D.

Visited Brits for the first time on recommendation from my family! Neat little place - no decor however. As you enter, you are asked to order your meal and then select a seat in the dining room. I ordered the two piece haddock meal that comes with bottomless pop (needed more syrup/over carbonated) and coffee / tea. It also comes with fries and a side. I tried the "mushy peas" however I believe the coleslaw may have been a better choice. The fish, batter and fries were great! I would definitely come back.

Really good fish and chips. Best this side of St Johns. Kind of expensive, though. $42.45 for 2 fish and chips and 2 pops.
