We had a connecting flight through Istanbul Airport on our way to Frankfurt, and overall it was a…read morevery positive experience. The airport is definitely very busy, so be prepared for crowds. That said, everything is well-organized, and we were able to make our connection in no time. What really stood out to me was the virtual information kiosks--such a great concept! When we arrived, our gate wasn't showing, and we weren't sure where to go. Within seconds, we connected to a live person through one of the screens, and they helped us right away. It made the experience so much less stressful. The airport itself is beautiful, modern, and full of options--plenty of shops, cafés, and restaurants to explore while you wait. And I have to say, the Turkish people we encountered were incredibly friendly and helpful. If you have a layover here, take a little time to look around--it's a great airport despite the hustle and bustle!

When we discovered that two of our carry on bags were too…read moreheavy the agent spent 5 minutes trying to talk us into buying another bag rather than checking them (he gave no reason- he just wouldn't listen when we said we wanted to check the bags). In order to pay for the checked bags we had to get out of line, go to a different booth at the other end of the terminal, stand in line there, and then that agent insisted on running separate transactions for each bags; each transaction took about 3 minutes to process). We were flying from Paris to Washington DC, and the agent gave us our boarding passes for the flight to Paris but wouldn't give us the second boarding pass because "AirFrance isnt open yet" (it was 10 am...). The agents were not knowledgeable of the airport layout or the systems they were operating (they could bot answered our questions or five directions to the gate) and one of the agents we interacted with seemed moody and rude. All around poor experience and we havent even made it to the flight yet.

This is a mixed bag for me. It was very very expensive for what it was. I had booked a queen room, which was a tiny pod of a room that felt like something from a space movie that didn't even have a window, just a glowing panel that was supposed to feel window-like. The real problem for me was that the room I was assigned had bed bugs. I always carefully check my hotel room when I first arrive, and I am glad that I did this because there were blood stains all over the bedding under the sheets, and there was even a squashed bug under the mattress. I immediately took photos and left. While this would be typically a 1-star experience, the men at the front desk salvaged things. They were so alarmed by my story and the photos that they immediately upgraded me to a larger room (which checked out to be clean, but I still kept my stuff packed and away from all soft surfaces just out of an abundance of caution), and they tried to offer late checkout or breakfast, neither of which I could do. I appreciated how seriously they took my complaints, but I definitely think this is a place you should approach with reasonable caution. Also, the hotel restaurant is astronomically priced. I had a plate of pasta, a bottle of water, and 2 glasses of wine, and the total was $87 USD.
