I am forever grateful for the amazing hospice team in the Roseville Sacramento region. I signed my 83 year old mom up for hospice care for bladder cancer and Bristol followed up with the nurses, social worker, and bather. They reminded me to call anytime I had a question. Their accessibility made me feel supported and cared for. They immediately made sure my mom had pain management taken care of. I didn't have to be burdened with waiting in line to get medications. This was significant since I'm the doing all of this alone. The RN case manager, Antoinette, has been a pivotal support agent in my life. She has a very present, nurturing quality to her. I felt safe breaking down into tears in her company. Her compassion, knowledge, and understanding reached my heart as she sat with me as I had a moment of immense grief. She said all the right things during a time I felt most vulnerable. I know this team must have pragmatic tasks of the job dealing with paperwork, but when they are with you they offer their complete presence while also juggling documentation and ordering supplies. The level of authentic care and sincerity means so much to me. I know my mom can feel it as well. read more

I waited to write this review to make sure it was fair. My father entered hospice care about three years ago, starting with Bristol Hospice. While his nurse was kind, she did not advocate for him when it mattered most. My dad was in severe pain from prostate cancer, and despite repeatedly telling them his medication wasn't working, Bristol ignored his pleas. Anyone who has watched a loved one die knows that no one in that situation asks for more medication "for fun." About a year into care, Bristol abruptly dropped my dad in the middle of his hospice journey. Before doing so, they told me they weren't taking away his driver's license, yet shortly after we received notice in the mail that they had. When I called to ask about it, they insisted they had told me beforehand--which was untrue. This deception not only stripped my dad of something deeply meaningful to him, it also eroded any trust we had in their care. As a social worker, I know what healthy, dignified care should look like. The way Bristol treated my dad--ignoring his pain, failing to advocate, and being dishonest about critical matters--was borderline abusive. Withholding effective pain management from a dying patient is unacceptable. read more

My 93 year old mom fell at her assisted living facility early in the morning, possibly around 7 am, on 5/31, and was found unconscious by the assisted living staff. We had received specific instructions from Bristol Hospice that only *they* could grant permission to call 911 in the case of an emergency. We were told that if the family or anyone else, including the assisted living facility, called 911 that the services would not be covered. So, following Bristol's instructions, the assisted living facility called Bristol--3 times--and each time, Bristol picked up and then immediately hung up. The staff that called said they could hear the click of the disconnect each time. We finally called their Concord location and they reached someone in the Fairfield office finally after 1 1/2 hours. At this point my mom had been lifted off the ground and placed in her bed, she had hit her head and was bleeding from her hand. She looked like she was having a stroke. Bristol finally calls back and says ok go ahead and call 911. We immediately fire Bristol. No one from Bristol ever apologized and no one even bothered to come out and assess her. Fast forward to today, 2 months later. Here's the call "hey we wanted to let you know we reached out to your Mom's doc to find out why she's no longer in hospice". WTF. Don't call her doctor, you guys were fucking FIRED. Why are you making any calls at all?! And they say oh well you know we didn't know all the circumstances that contributed to you firing us but why don't you give us another chance? We're sorry your mom laid there waiting for an hour and a half while we ignored your calls ON PURPOSE. And anyway we have really good reviews! Yeah, well no way no how and thank you for triggering my anger again with your phone call today which compelled me to write this long overdue bad review you earned AND deserve. Maybe the picture here of my mom unconscious and on the ground will remind Bristol that their clients are actual human beings. When my wife was going to be released from the hospital she was going to be put on hospice. My daughter handled the hospice end as our medical plan was no longer taking hospice patients as they were full. So they referred Bristol and my daughter did a review check on them and was satisfied. By the afternoon they had everything set up at our house so we could bring my wife home. The initial person met with us to go over the information they needed from us, explained what was going to happen and recommended also getting things set up with what ever funeral home we wished to use. From there the nurses started coming over daily for around an hour. They explained how to give her meds to make her comfortable, check vitals and all the items they provided, diapers, pads, and cleaning products. The nurses were always kind, professional and knowledgeable in the job. The aides would come every few days to bath and clean her. They were also very caring and did a great job! If I had a problem after hours the on duty nurse was outstanding in helping me with my issue. They have a 24 hour phone line! My wife passed away after three and a half weeks(July 27th). The Roseville, Sacramento Bristol Hospice people were all outstanding, friendly and professional! I would know as I worked 32 years in the fire service. Specific to the Sacramento branch... from initial intake to our final goodbyes, the care team assigned to our family was absolutely wonderful. They were recommended to us by the facility he resided and together, they provided my family with the respite we didn't know we needed. Bristol's team always showed the care and compassion you hope for while still being professional about their work. Any concerns were addressed quickly and I felt that the care team assigned to us became an extension of our family. I am deeply grateful for them, including Margarite, Tina, Donna, and Corbin for their in-person visits and the many others that helped and manned the 24 hour phone lines... My experience with Bristol Hospice could not have been better. We were provided everything we needed to allow our loved one to die at home, comfortably with love and grace surrounding him. The nursing staff, specifically Mimi and Jesse, were responsive, knowledgable and very caring both to the patient and to the family. Within 24 hours, we had a hospital bed, a wheelchair, drugs, and other assorted things so that we could care for him safely and comfortably. We also had several visits from a social worker who was also extremely helpful. We would have had a visit from a chaplain too if our friend had lived long enough. I cannot recommend Bristol Hospice more highly. The efficient, professional and warm hearted care we received from them made our difficult time much easier to live through. The work and care provided allowed us to spend our last days with our dying friend focused on love, affection and memories rather than worry, pain and stress. We will always be grateful to Bristol Hospice for what they did for us. read more

The experience with the staff is very bad we are waiting for the antibiotic for my father since today early in the morning this is the 3rd time with the same problem and the pharmacy always bring the medication late and this is very important for his health. 1 star not even worth this. Thanks Dr.Husain for taking 7 days to sign my dads death certificate. You jerk. Burn in HELL. The incompetent staff, no DNR with them so we were told by Roseville care center they were required to "revive him with every measure" 3 days later, 13 hours before my dad dying we got the DNR from Kaiser. My dad screaming in the background because "they" didn't give him the morphine every 2 hours at the care center and the lack of returning 17 phone calls 14 house before my dad died SUFFERING June 20, 2022. His death, the last 2 days were the most horrific and terrible. Negligence on Bristol's side as well as Roseville Care Center. I'm currently in the medical field and have access to EVERY committee their license that keeps them open will be shut down! Bristol will endure the loss of Kaisers contract and it's coming in June. My brother was with another hospice and was placed at Westview in Auburn. He hated it there (that's for another review) so I decided to bring him to my house in Sacramento but would require changing to another hospice, so we were referred to Bristol. His condition was rapidly degrading so needed to make the move fast to get him here. Bristol got equipment out to my house within a day. After they dropped off and setup everything up I realized they forgot a wheelchair. I called them and they promised it would arrive next morning before I went to pick my brother up, and it was. My brother was extremely restless the first night at our house and next day the nurse picked up on it and adjusted his meds so he could rest easier. A day later he became bed ridden and the nurse was extremely helpful in showing us tips and tricks to care for him like changing the sheets. Another couple of days and he passed around 1am, the nurse was there within a half hours and was extremely respectful and offered sincere condolences. Today I received a sympathy card from them hand signed by all the staff. The helped take some stress out of a terrible event. read more

Bristol hospice representatives smiled and promised the moon and we got nothing when we really, really needed them. The patient died too soon because they would not provide all that they promised verbally, in their paperwork and brochures. I write this because I don't want this to happen to YOUR love one. They were able to accommodate us very quickly when other companies were needing a few days to take our case. The manager and nurse who did our initial intake was very kind and professional, they provided plenty of materials as well. However in hindsight I do wish perhaps they could have been more point blank about the process and how difficult it is (a nurse from the company later would say "its not like you see on TV unfortunately".) We also had an issue with the final nurse who assisted as she: 1. Called the house phone waking up the whole house in this horrible final moment rather than using discretion calling our cell phone as we had specifically asked. 2. She sat typing her notes literally feet away from the family as we were grieving around the bed rather than maybe stepping outside or into another room to type her notes. So I guess if I could rate just the initial nurse who did our intake and scope of service I'd say 5 stars but unfortunately the last nurse would bring it down to 3 stars at best. read more

We had such a good experience with Bristol Hospice. In this time of COVID 19 in home care is more difficult to find. Kevin Laferty was our Mom's nurse. He was wonderful. From taking care of her needs and giving us advice while she was alive, to pronouncing her death, bathing and dressing her after death, to taking care of all that was necessary after she passed. The intake/evaluating nurse is excellent, and you could not find a kinder social service nurse...But the follow-up nursing care leaves much to be desired. We had a couple of crisis episodes and had a terrible time trying to reach any nurse at Bristol for several days at a time. (answering service would take the message, but no return call) Nursing care was not up to expectations. We wisely changed to another Hospice service. Be warned: Not all Hospice services are the same, you have a choice. It's up to you. Ask questions and find the Hospice that you feel confident will meet your loved ones needs. Make sure that the comfort of your love one is the Hospice nurse's prime concern. Most of the time it will be...but if it isn't, don't be afraid to address that concern quickly and directly. If the matter is not corrected...don't waste valuable time, change to another Hospice. You have a choice! read more

My mother, Betty, was being serviced by Bristol Hospice Roseville for several months while living in an assisted living memory care facility in Elk Grove. I had the pleasure of getting to know Agatha who explained the services to our family which were delivered just as she said they would be. Jason and Jaymee were her visiting nurses and they were so loving and kind throught the many months of care. They both communicated with me after each visit and encouraged me to get in touch anytime. They treated my family like their family. Jaymee was there before my passed and came back later that day to comfort us and prepare our mom's body. Wish I could give negative stars! Our hospital Sutter Auburn Faith recommended this company for home hospice for my father. They explained how caring and well organized it would be. All we had to do was care for my father and spend loving quality time with him, so of course I we chose them. They messed up at every turn and caused so much undo stress. They were supposed to have all equipment and meds here and ready before my dad arrived home. He was on a lot of respiratory equipment and we were assured they could replicate that at home. The only thing that was here when my dad arrived was a bed. The respiratory equipment we got at 11pm was faulty and we didn't even get meds until the next day. We were on the phone the whole next day making sure they reordered equipment that he needed to breathe. They kept saying the driving would be there any min, that was at 9 am, no one arrived until 11pm again. We are already massively upset, tired and broken and we have to fight them tooth and nail to get what should have been here before he got home. One RN even left a glove on him that caused a wound. I get that they are in the business of death but we thought love, compassion and dignity would have been important to this company too. What should have been quality time with my dad was used fighting this company to make sure he wasn't suffocating and in pain. I would not recommend anyone using this company for home hospice. How dare they make this time in our lives even harder, who does that? read more

An outsource of Kaiser. No communication. No returned calls. No empathy for my Mom at all.

Bristol Hospice took my mother's case as an overflow to Kaiser's hospice facilities. I did not know what to expect as this was my first experience with hospice care. Bristol staff arrived that day and did the intake, the chaplain touched base with us the following day and we spoke with the social service worker over the phone. The team nurse, Christine visited my mother twice a week most weeks & if she wasn't there another RN took her place. The health aid came out twice a week to help with changing sheets and bathing and she was so kind and gentle with my mother it was very touching. The care we received was phenomenal and I felt very well taken care of. There was one nurse who filled in once that I felt wasn't quite on point and Christine took note of it and handled it. She understood that not everyone clicks with each staff member. When my mother passed, Bristol was there very quickly and took care of all the arrangements. They stayed until the mortuary staff arrived and then followed up with us afterwards. Thank you to all the staff! read more

Bristol hospice was the second hospice agency that helped with the last years of my mothers struggle with the horrible disease, of Alzheimer's. Bristol was hands down the better of the two companies. Everyone from the people in the office, social workers, chaplains, nurses, doctors, and aides were wonderful for my mother and myself. They made sure my needs were met as much as my mothers and trust me, if you ever find yourself in a caregiver situation, you will need someone to help guide you through. I would highly recommend Bristol for anyone needing hospice for a loved one. read more

Choosing a hospice provider is tough. Your choice will make the difference between last days and moments with your loved one that are peaceful and loving or horrific and stressful. Bristol will ensure the latter. My list of grievances with them is long, from errors in medication that were not corrected to the failure to provide the proper breathing equipment or even a bed that was long enough; however, the deepest wound they inflicted was the cookie-cutter 'medication' plan they executed in my father's last hours that violated our agreement. On the day he died, they gave instructions to the med tech to force the maximum dose of morphine down his throat hourly even though we had agreed it would be administered only when and as needed. Dad died while a final dose was administered, even though moments before he had been resting peacefully with me by his side. They'd had to remove his oxygen mask and with their fingers, smear the liquid in his mouth and throat. I wish you a better experience in the difficult journey ahead and, if you end up with Bristol or an agency like them and don't have time to change, stand strong against their pressure to apply a cookie-cutter approach to care that shreds the dignity of your loved one. To my everlasting regret, I did not fight them hard enough when I shouldn't have needed to fight them at all. read more

My dad first started care by Bristol Hospice back in December of last year and just died in April, these people were great, there were four people employed by Bristol that were my favorites and pretty much regulars that ranged from care givers to RN's and they were great with my dad, they made him feel at ease and tried to do the most they could do for him to make him comfortable, also a couple of them had great personalities which made him laugh, something he wasn't doing much of because of his pain and uncomfortableness. I would definitely recommend Bristol Hospice, very friendly and very helpful to you and and your loved one in need of care. Review of Bristol Hospice at Avalon Care Center in Modesto, CA. If you need ghoul service, call Bristol Hospice. They will feed on your dying body by billing for daily visits that do absolutely no good. Our family member was unfortunate to land at Avalon Care Center in Modesto with Bristol assigned to hospice care. Not only was the food horrible but so was the staff! Hand in hand with Bristol's visiting ghoul, Lawrence, was an unfriendly, mal content staff that take their sweet time to come when called and can be rough with patients. If I could give negative stars I would. I think hospice is a blessing. My father who is currently dying thinks it is a joke because Bristol is his only experience. Thus far they have failed to show up for appointments and did not call to say they would not be there. They did not update his binder, leaving the next nurse completely at a loss as to what is going on. My parents are elderly and have difficulty following all the medical jargon so they are not good at filling the next nurse in and I was present for one visit and the nurse was visibly snippy with my father, who is on morphine and oxy, for being unable to tell her his diagnosis and what the previous nurse had done. I understand these nurses have several assignments and that any given time one of these patients may be dying or in distress which may delay them or require them to miss an appointment. But I also know they are in a profession which requires them to CARRY A TELEPHONE. Like Sandra above we have had difficulty getting calls returned, even when we stressed that we needed medication. And when one missed visit was to deliver medication we were told they would call an order in to Wal-Mart and all we needed to do was walk in, give our name and we could pick it up, no payment necessary and no information other than my father's name. When we got there they asked how we wanted to pay for the medication. They asked for our "card" (not his medicare card) and asked for numbers and various other information which we were never given. The wonderful girl working there called around and he was not "in the system". Most importantly, they are not doing the job hospice is intended to do. Hospice is intended to allow the dying individual to go on their journey toward the end of life without pain and anxiety. I keep hearing how good they are at this and I believe they have to ability to be. Bristol, however is not. At the moment they are once again late, without phoning, for an appointment and my father is extremely agitated. To give context. The appointment was a result of our complaint and a supervisor was coming along. This was their last chance in my book. I am here because I was online researching other hospice services. They blew it. I will say that one nurse who came to our house Halloween night was fantastic I and would give her five stars. It's a shame she has to work for such a terrible organization. She deserves better. She explained the emergency kit, was clearly disappointed that others had not done their paperwork, was patient with my difficult father and - miracle of miracles - followed up the next day on something like she promised she would. read more

Not a fan. Very intrusive in families personal business. Their philosophy about how your family member last days should be handled is really not about quality of life in our opinion it's about keeping them drugged and masting symptoms that can be easily treated to provide your family member comfort while they can be alert not drugged for their last days. Know this do your research and talk to the different hospice providers before your hire them and know you can fire them if they are NOT in alignment with your idea for care and hire another company that is. Never allow hospice access to your loved ones primary care doctors. Use theirs. Less issues with the company. read more

I'm sorry the other reviewers have had negative experiences with Bristol, but I can say our experience was quite different. After my brother was discharged without notice from Snowline Hospice (a new medical director came in a week after he was placed in hospice and decided he was "too young" to be making this sort of decision and then lied to our family about my brother's treating physician saying there were other life prolonging treatments available to him), Bristol stepped in and made sure he was taken care of. We lived relatively outside their normal treatment area (El Dorado County), but we found the staff to be attentive and responsive. Perhaps the other reviewers should have requested a change in nurses if they felt there were problems. We did have several nurses that either didn't "click" with my brother or weren't listening to what he was saying. This was easily remedied by calling administration and requesting another nurse. The support staff was also wonderful as well. The chaplain and social worker assigned to our family were immensely supportive, as was the aide assigned. By the end of our families journey, they felt much like a part of our family. Like Sandra W. said, not all hospice services are the same. We came from a hospice situation that was terrible (which made my brother concerned for the duration of hospice that he was going to be "kicked out" as he had been with Snowline.), to one that was caring and supportive, but you have to advocate for what the patient needs, no matter which organization you choose. read more

HORRIBLE COMMUNICATION if your in the placerville area DO NOT use this hospice! I can't review the company as a whole but I can advise not to use them if your in the Placerville area. You will have little or no communication. They must be short staffed in the area and your loved one will never have the same nurses or staff that can update you on any changes. Due to this reason alone you need to have a stable staff that can identify changes in your loved ones health and behavior to provide proper care. My mother for 4 days has had SEVER changes in behavior, she is now delusional and even fell off her bed " trying to escape" but because we do not have the same staff, I receive a call stating my mother is just fine and no injuries at 830 pm, and she fell that morning and I was at the nursing home from 12-630 pm that day. The nursing facility called hospice 3 times while I was visiting my mother, while myself and my father calmed her down . I lost it on the nurse because I have seen the changes and they have no idea because this is the first time meeting my mother again!!! Hospice is supposed to provide amazing services to the family and loved ones at end of life. This is just a sample of what I have experienced in just a few moths .Bristol acknowledges at one point they would make changes and give them another opportunity. And here we are again and my time is very limited with my mother. I will be changing hospice services for my mother to seek the appropriate care and to help us through this journey. read more

Employees are excellent. They are a service provider for profit. The business model is dysfunctional but still serves their purpose to bilk Medicare. I refer to Bristol as 'In your face hospice care' You will have a Dr Smith prescribe medications etc without ever seeing the client or communicating with their family member to discuss options and preferences. They will deliver so much medical equipment and supplies it won't fit in the room. They never ask the client or representative before hand. The medications are morphine, heavy benzodiazepines and stool softeners even when there is little pain or anxiety and there is consistent loose stools. Their slogan is keep them doped up and loose. One size fits all medicine. My mother was remove from hospice for a fractured hip caused by an assisted living facility but was declined to return. They would prefer keeping the patient in a stupor with morphine till she passes months later with pressure sores rather than ending the pain by repairing the fracture. Mom was dying of cachexia caused by colon cancer. There is no concern about the cachexia or quality of the life remaining. Just dope her up and let lay there to die in a stupor. It was advantageous that the fracture be repaired. Being able to move about without pain. The dignity of using the bathroom. And less work for the health care aids. Bristol won't outright decline you. They just say your not ready for hospice. You'll receive the long drawn out spiel about failing organs till you get so feed up you tell them to stuff it. If possible don't sign on for hospice care. Your doctor can prescribe the medications and home health care. Hospice doesn't provide much of anything but problems and limitations. In the Yuba Sutter area Rideout Home Health has the best staff and organization in the area. Their nurses and therapists are professional and caring. A personable home town feeling. . read more

Bristol Hospice called my 87 year old mother's insurance company to notify them of her death, the only problem was that she was still alive. My mother was released from hospice due to improved health, not death. She was without insurance for 7 weeks before this came to my attention. She ultimately was without her meds. If she had not needed meds I don't know when I would have discovered what had occurred. If she had needed hospitalization she would have been out of luck. I spent 4 hours on the phone sorting out the mess they caused. The insurance company is filing a claim against Bristol for damages.The director, Mary Kay Walters of Bristol would not speak to me. After 5 hours of attempting to contact her she passed me off to someone else. They acted as if it was insignificant, were not apologetic, not worth their time, it was appalling. My mother may very well be on hospice again, but it will not be Bristol. Update: The Director of Bristol Hospice was finally willing to speak with me, she offered no apology for their error or the chaos caused by their incompetence. I am shocked and would never higher this company. I am a care provider and have been taking care of elderly man with dementia 24 hours a day for the last fifteen months. He's bed ridden but still has a big appetite three meals a day. No problems swallowing. Is on soft foods due to no teeth or dentures provided by the family.
