Tucked away in a nice part of town on the corner of Baldwin and Stephen streets sits this old-school gent's barber. A bit smaller than some of the others in town but no less charming. Toni and Marco are two Italian gentlemen who, well, style hair. It's a standard price for most styles of about ten pounds give or take a bit. They also offer a very fine wet shave and some of the best John Cleese-esque dry humour I've encountered since leaving boarding school!

I find this stretch a bit of a time warp - there's three shops in a row that have a slightly rustic feel (the italian, this barbers, and the tobacconist next door), which would probably have gone out of business a long time ago if they were situated anywhere else in town. Toni's a pretty nice guy, and will give you a good cut, and interesting (rare for a hairdressers) chat whilst he's giving you a trim. It's a pretty straight up barbers shop, with no frills or pretentions, just make yourself look smart and get on your way. Decent shop with decent prices.

Located on North Street not far from Bedminster Parade, they are open from 7am so you can pop in on your way to work. The staff are always cheery and they usually have a good selection of Newspapers/magazines to read while you wait. Can sometimes be busy at lunch times.

Nice, friendly, and they care about what they do. Other places nearby are charging twice the price, and you'll get a bad cut as they're too busy playing with their new wireless music system or watching the horse racing on the TV (both true experiences). But at FNS they keep it simple. No distractions, no silly theatrics, they just get on with cutting your hair and making sure you get what you asked for. For a good honest barber cut, this is the place to go. Trust me, I've pretty much tried them all now.

A waiting room, for starters, with a fine selection of men's magazines and comfortable seats. A few good chairs line the walls with big clean mirrors to catch up on a spot of vanity. The brushes and scissors are kept in pots of steriliser that smell of Top Gear and London Pride. Then the memories flow back. The red and white spiral column out front, or the conversation with the gentleman - so much more than the trivia spilled in most modern hairdressers. And the price? The price is just right - about a tenner. What more could you want?

So saying that Kingsdown Barbers managed to get this right isn't really paying them too much of a compliment. With that said, everything else I saw of the barber (e.g. the haircuts they were giving everyone else) suggested that they would have been able to deal with a more difficult assignment. The salon is clean and pretty sleek. There wasn't much of a wait when I went along and the staff were chatty without any air headed 'So you going somewhere hot this year?' you usually get. The prices are pretty good, especially considering the pricy surroundings. It annoys me that far too many barber shops seem to add loads of bells and whistle in order to justfy putting a couple more quid on the bill and thankfully this isn't the case here - you just get a decent hair cut but for a fair price.

From the outside, Kingsdown Barbers looks really small, but it does go back quite a bit inside so don't be put off. The decor is really modern and clean, and I really like the red walls. The name 'Barbers' innitailly put me off as I assumed they only catered for men but this is not the case. In fact when I visited, there were far more females than males in there! The hairdressers are friendly and chatty but do not bombard you will questions which is nice! At only £17 for a cut and finish, it really is a bargin. I haven't however experienced what they are like with perming or colouring so I am reluctant to rate it too highly. They also don't take card payment so bare this in mind when visiting as there are no free ATMs locally. In general though I would recommened going here for your hair dressing needs.
