I proposed with a 1.2 carat diamond & 1/3 carat side stones, in a white gold "halo" setting. She said yes!!
    Eric S.

DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER ***this is part 1 in a 10-part series as I count down to a very special 1,000th post. These are local legends, places of international intrigue, historic businesses, and unforgettable opportunities. All five stars, of course.*** I followed Beyonce's advice and finally put a ring on it. Maybe I'd known all along that I wanted to marry Nichole C, but after two years of dating an amazing person I felt that July 2019 would be the right time to pop the question (which I wound up doing in Tokyo at the international fireworks festival--more on that later). My (at the time) girlfriend had dropped plenty of not-so-subtle hints as to what she wanted in a ring, and more specifically where she wanted one bought from. I looked at other places for a cost comparison, and on 7/11/19 I made the decision to shop downtown for some sustainable jewelry. Brilliant Earth is appointment-only; you won't be able to access their showroom if you just waltz in off the street. Their Chicago location is on the Near North Side, on the 2nd floor of 34 E Oak St between Nico Osteria and Del Frisco's. These stones are grown in a lab, meaning that they're real but don't have any blood on them, so to speak. I arrived on-time and Thomas G walked me through all the steps, from choosing the right center stone to finding the perfect setting. I knew what I wanted for shape and carat, I had an idea of color, and knew absolutely nothing about either cut or clarity. He was patient and explained all the in's & out's to me. Ultimately, I went with a 1 karat center diamond with 1/3 karat side stones, in a 18K white gold halo. The stone's cut was 'super ideal', meaning it reflected the maximum amount of light. This thing really sparkles & shines! It was colorless and 'VVS1' -- the 3rd highest measure of clarity -- almost internally flawless. I won't divulge how much I spent (that's a pretty tacky move, tbh) but I will say it's less than what you might pay at Zales or Jared. The biggest difference is that these rocks are guaranteed to be conflict-free, so you can shop with a clear conscience. Suffice to say, it took her breath away when I opened that little wooden box in Japan. * TL;DR * Buying an engagement ring is a huge commitment, both financially and emotionally. I feel good about my purchase here and if I had to do it all over again, I would. I'll be recommending that my dude friends consider Brilliant Earth once they reach that stage in their relationship. Everyone wins when you buy ethically sourced jewelry. Fellas, do your research and don't settle for anything less than stellar. Trust me, she's worth it.

Lousy craftsmanship. Diamonds keep falling out with normal wear. Regret getting our rings here.

One day I finally had time and went out of my way just to come back to peruse this store. Upon entering, no one greeted me, which is not a great start. A simple greeting can go a long way to acknowledge your customers and to make them feel welcomed. I slowly scanned each section, and I noticed at one point one of the employees came to the section I was ogling, but still did not acknowledge my presence. At that time a couple of ladies entered the store and were immediately greeted with "welcome in! Let us know if we can help you with anything!" I made my way around the store finally browsing the area near the register. The 2 sales people at the register never said a word to me. Other customers were coming in, some getting greeted, depending on their nationality is what it seemed like. In the end I spent about 20 minutes in the store and might as well have been invisible. Hopefully they learn to be better and greet customers of all colors. Three salespeople and not even one "hi" is not acceptable. In hindsight it seems that the employee that came up to the section I was at was probably to making sure I wasn't stealing?

We were shocked, confused, and honestly embarrassed, in public for something we didn't do. They didn't ask politely or explain anything. They just assumed. No proof. No apology. nothing We cooperated and showed them we had nothing, and instead of admitting their mistake, they gave us attitude and let us go like we were guilty. This kind of treatment is completely unacceptable, especially when you treat young customers like criminals just because we're teens or don't "look" like your usual shoppers. We came to shop, not to be profiled or harassed. I will not be returning, and I wouldn't recommend this store to anyone who values basic respect.

She is on the phone. "Hi, may I take a quick picture?"…read moreI asked politely. The lady responded, "no photo, goodbye." While this short poem pretty much sums up my 30-second visit at Oriental Boutique, it is also an acrostic that describes the lady's attitude and the service. I was looking for a traditional Chinese dress (i.e. Qi Pao) for my girlfriend, whom I am going to marry. However, most of the designs cater to kids or tourists (that might explain why most positive reviews were written by non-Asian customers... just saying!) and very few of them are for adults. As someone who grew up in an ethnically Chinese background, I had seen and worn more culturally authentic and better designed traditional gowns and dresses. Many designs displayed in the store seem "oriental" in a western sense or as in what westerners think "oriental" should look like, but this is just my subjective observation and honest opinion. The lady was on the phone all the time, and when I asked her question, she literally answered, "no photo, goodbye." Okay. BYE. NEVER AGAIN! Wish I could have given a zero or a negative number.
