They never changed my dad. They never bathed him.. If my mom didn't go everyday he would be sitting in filthy clothes and feces... If your loved has dementia I would definitely not have them go here. After 3 weeks of being there they sent him to a behavioral health facility and we couldn't visit at all and he got covid and sepsis and then basically passed away in hospice a month later. I guess if you want your loved one to pass away send them here. They know what to do.

I have read so many terrible things about how the elderly are treated in these kinds of places and thus I was really worried, especially when I left them there and moved home to California. During the pandemic, and even up until today, Alexian Village has a very high level of staff turnover at all levels, which usually indicates a management issue. However, I don't know the real cause. But as my "parents" have now been there for months, I've noticed that most of the people who serve them seem to be decent people who really care about the elders in their facility. Especially Helen at the front desk, who is a remarkable, wonderful person they are so lucky to have! (Beware of the other front desk woman, though. She seems to hate everyone and everything!) I've also learned that the dire situations my parents report are often not so accurate when I actually investigate what's happening. I am learning to give Alexian Village much more of the benefit of a doubt in these situations. They are, after all, doing a job I was no longer capable of doing myself. The ideal of course in an AL is that your relative is supremely happy, relieved and delighted. That's not likely to happen, no matter how angelic your loved ones are or are not. (That's a new realization for me!) Moving into an AL means that the party is coming to an end, and that's got to be hard for any elder to accept. Now that I have less concern about mistreatment, lack of food, lack of services, mean staff, stolen items, stolen clothing, unavailable healthcare and all the other things mine have complained about, I see that a lot of the drama is really just their unhappiness to be in AL in the first place. I believe Alexian Village is doing the best they can under the difficult circumstances made more difficult by the pandemic. It's irrational to expect this to be easy on your elders or yourself. It just won't be. Breathe. PS - There's one very bad review here, with one star. It talks about how often they change her mom's diaper. I think that poster is messed up, because Alexian V. is an assisted living, not a nursing home. Only nursing homes provide that level of nursing care. She may have posted in the wrong place?

Call lights were not answered that she finally just got up by herself . They felt that waiting 30-40 mins when you have to go was fine and many times she ended up been a mess. I have never been in a facility like this where you never see a nurse or cna in the halls. THey are always telling you they are understaffed and overworked. I could go on and on . Lastly , I don't understand how they feel that a shower once a week is sufficient. Please find another rehab place for you or your loved ones. I couldn't wait to get her out.

He started in Rehab after a hospitalization and then transitioned to Long Term Care. This is a wonderful place that I highly recommend. The nurses are wonderful and have taken great care of him. Everyone is very friendly and very kind to my brother. The food is great, his room is always clean and my brother is always clean and well taken care of. This is a great place!

But after several different facilities, we were lucky to land at Autumn Leaves. From the start, AL has been more interested in solutions rather than problems. Each new challenge in dealing with my mother's dementia is met by the staff in a caring and responsible fashion. We are very happy, and frankly blessed, to have found this facility. Pricing is competitive, but the staff attitude makes this a steal in terms of results. My mother is happy and is treated with the level of respect we'd expect to give her ourselves. Mother has Parkinson's and father has Dementia. The staff are caring and tend to both mom and in their own unique way by providing very different levels of comfort to each. The staff is genuine and caring and truly provides a "home" to each resident. They engage the residents in daily organized events and reach out to everyone individually. Each resident has different needs and the staff not only recognizes this and comforts each in their own way but they also have fun doing it and this shows! The staff is generally nice but overworked. Several slips in care occurred but one was unacceptable and caused me long term problems. One night my Dad needed help going to the bathroom and no one came. After 3 hours, he couldn't hold it anymore and wet himself in the bed. When the morning staff came in, he was wallowing in pee. The experience was obviously humiliating. Devastating to his long term care needs, he now refuses to be " put in a home" and will only return to his house. He will not even consider places outside The Moorings.

The Nurses, Caregivers, Activity coordinators, especially Kristi, Issac and the kitchen Staff all the way down to the laundry gals & the maintenance man Alex. I wish I could name them all. They take such good care of their residents, They get to know the families by first name. Kept me updated at all times. They helped me have a better understanding of Dementia and the behaviors that come with it. Gisela and her staff deserve a metal, they are all so compassionate. The last few months she was in hospice (Suncrest Hospice) Red contacted me weekly and her hospice nurse Gloria are the best of the best. Gloria took such good care of her. Dressing her up so pretty, lipstick and little color on her cheeks. The day she died she looked so beautiful, you never would have known she was 96 years old. She went very peacefully and I know deep down she appreciated each and everyone of you at the Waverly by making the end of her life so wonderful. Thank you, Susan S

New Perspectives, Long Grove has provided great care for my mother. My mother has been a resident…read morein the memory care wing at New Perspectives, Long Grove for over 2 years. She entered just after Covid, new ownership transition along with a transitional Executive Director. There were some noticeable rough spots when she first entered, however the core staff was present which did not diminish high quality care that my mom received. Shout outs to the excellent care takers, activity directors and Katherine, the Health & Wellness director, for exercising great skill and compassion during this transitional period. There has been a noticeable improvement with current Executive Director Kirsten (in place since July of 2024). Kirsten is fantastic and maintains strong leadership in providing a high quality of life for the residents. Don't be distracted with the "Shiny Brand New" facilities that are popping up. It's the staff and the care that they provide that really matter - New Perspectives, Long Grove continues to provide excellent care for its residents.

Caring.com put Harbor House in touch with me and from the moment I spoke with Savannah, the executive director, I knew this place was special. Savannah actually did the assessment at the big, fancy, expensive nursing home and confirmed what I already suspected. We moved her out of there and Savannah actually drove out there and helped me move her stuff and my mom (I was visiting mom out of town). Over the next few days, I got a very up-close look at Harbor House and how the staff interacts with their residents. I popped in at unexpected times and walked through the adjacent buildings. I never saw a deviation from the excellence of care I saw the first time - not even once. I never saw residents mistreated or spoken to condescendingly, like I did at the other place. The caregivers are amazing women. Sam, Becky, Brittany, are really hands on nurses. Sam spent tons of time with me, discussing my mother's medications. The doctors call you and I spoke with Dr. Ernst about my mom for an hour! I couldn't even get the doctor at the big, fancy place to return my call! The place is small and it's warm and cozy - like a previous commenter said, it's not like an institution at all. It's like a home. My mom has an adorable sunny, private room with her own bathroom. She's always got someone there to help her. All I can say about this place except is that it's exceptional. I have learned that big, fancy nursing homes are usually understaffed and can't manage the needs of their patients. This place CARES for their patients. I don't need crystal chandeliers and big lobbies. I need individualized care with people who treat the elderly like the human beings they are. Harbor House does this. My mom lives in the Northwest Suburbs and we finally decided that she could no longer "do it…read morealone". We had gone through a lot with my dad before he passed away and so we knew what we wanted and what we didn't. Unfortunately, the informal network we used for my dad didn't have women caregivers so we were back to to square one. After doing a lot of research with the local senior center and online we called For Papa's Sake, which is based out of the town next to where my mom lives. From the very first phone call I suspected we had gotten lucky. After a couple of calls and some group discussion between me, my mom and a For Papa's Sake senior person we decided we'd try them out. And am I glad we did. They listened to my mom's and my requests, likes, dislikes, deal-breakers etc. and they never batted an eye. They did say it might take a bit longer than usual (given our needs) to find the right care giver, but they called back in less than 5 days and we had a care giver within 10 days to 2 weeks of that 1st main discussion. That care giver has worked out so well. It has really improved our lives and I can go days without worrying about my mom...what a relief. That's what For Papa's Sake provides: relief! If you are looking for an alternative to a nursing home or aged care facility or whatever you want to call it, For Papa's Sake really cares and I would encourage you to give them a call. They have worked out great for us and I would not recommend them for something so important if they weren't doing a great job.
