This is one of those monuments that it is easy to take in as a few columns, water and then walk on. Whilst, there is an undeniable aesthetic to the memorial, I do think that it would present a more poignant message had it been a bit more to the point.
Whilst I would agree with India's annoyance at people using it as a paddling pool, I can see how those without the time to actually read the plaque of names could make such a crass mistake.
There used to be a neolithic stone circle in this area of the Old Steine, so I think that the location is a good spot for this acknowledgement to those that gave their lives during the Great War. Seeing as it was erected before Brighton had become the bustling city it is today, the monument would do well with a refurb of the gate and better information about what it is and why it is there being presented. read more
