My mother and I had an excellent experience with Briggs as sellers of antiquities. My mom was downsizing into a smaller residence, and had to give up many precious antiques that she and her mother had collected for years. Everything that Briggs did to handle the estate was top-notch: from initial communication about the process and their pricing structure, to carefully packing and moving the items, to researching and assessing each piece, and finally, to selling the items with detailed, accurate descriptions, then providing a detailed list of what sold, for how much, and a check sent within a month of the last sale. Josie from Briggs was great both on the phone and over email (and in person, per my mom). My mom said she couldn't be happier with Briggs - even if some items didn't fetch as much money as we had hoped they would, we felt like everything was handled very professionally and fairly - and sometimes, antiques just don't go for as much as you'd think they would. First, some context. My sisters and I all have a background in the auction business. Birthday Twin has been a PA/NJ/DE licensed auctioneer for something like 32 years, worked at an art auction house for a couple of years, and now works regularly with a group that auctions antique/vintage dolls about 3-4 times a year. By way of Birthday Twin, FDC, The Patriarch, the Matriarch and I have all also been involved in various ways. The Matriarch helped set up the dolls and kept a second audit track of bidders at the auctions. I did clerical work. The Patriarch drove everyone places and muttered about how the ugliest dolls bring the most money. FDC was probably the least engaged, however she, too, would do setups and help make sales catalogs, etc. In short, none of us are newbies. Since Birthday Twin has been exclusively auctioning dolls for decades, there was little danger of me being a regular customer, as they're not my thing, nor are they FDCs. During the Age of Corona, however, FDC became interested in general auctions, such as Brigg's, and discovered their very well designed app they use to conduct auctions in this time. She introduced me, and one of us is definitely hooked (her) while the other has scored some nice things for herself and for resale (me). One of the things you have to understand about general auctions is that this is most definitely "caveat emptor", they are not experts and there is no catalog or provenance claimed. Everything is As Is, Where Is. Also, since these are online there's no real ability to inspect beyond the photos they provide. This is riskier than on-site auctions with previews where you can get a look up close, etc. It's where my nice infrared heater I scored turned out to be a box full of household items carefully wrapped inside. It looked like it was never opened, the taping was very industrial, and it had the right weight for a heater. Fortunately, there are enough items with some value that I will recoup my investment plus a little extra. Once we've won items, pickup is at their auction house in Garnet Valley/Boothwyn. I say both, because while the address is Garnet Valley, it's directly across the street from Booth's Corner, a mainstay of Boothwyn flea market culture. The Briggs building itself is very nondescript, no fancy signs or lighting. Lot is mostly gravel with some pavement. On pickup days you approach one door where you yell your name to them and someone looks up your invoices, they then tell you which door to go to for pickups. You then stand around outside and wait for someone to bring your items out and call your name. Note: They are very strict about mask wearing, even outside, even while waiting. If you want to stay there and take your mask off, you get in your car and take it off there. Otherwise they will nicely/pointedly remind you that masks are required. Generally, they are nice people, some funny, some perpetually having a bad day, but in general they are fine. Once they start to recognize you, if you become a 'regular', most of the staff warm up to you. Lastly, bring your own tools, your own packing materials, and be sure to measure. FDC is bad about that, leaving one load of some items she bought as a game of "Mini Van 3D Tetris" that had the staff so impressed they offered for us to come work for them. General item auctions can be a lot of fun, and you can score some very nice deals,. You have to understand that this is "as is, where is" and sometimes what you think you're getting (an infrared space heater) turns out to be something different (a box full of household stuff). Lastly, know the value going in, sometimes bidders drive prices way beyond auction values, I have seen some stuff go for seriously inflated prices because of this. read more

We didn't see anything we wanted though so we didn't stick around long. I bought plenty of stuff from Briggs over the past few years: cookware, furniture, etc. I can't speak to how the owner and workers are with handling the actual estates, because I never used their services for that, but I can say that they are always friendly at the auction. I used go to Briggs fairly frequently and they still remember me, which is always nice. My complaint though (which is no fault of Briggs), is that there alot of second-hand shop owners that go there to buy for their stores. That's awesome for them, but bad for a new homeowner like me that just wants inexpensive, nice furniture. I tend to miss out when the price goes too high. Oh well! read more

Its a tradition to go Booth corners farmers marker and Brigg's Auction on Fridays nights. since 1932. Family run business which spans at least 4 generations. clean cheerful and dog friendly. Decorator's Delight no matter what your experience level or taste they have all it all from colonial period , Victorian, arts & crafts era, art deco and mid century modern. I have never been to an auction where there was not a museum quality item show cased in the front room or a $2000 item buried in the back room like hidden treasure. Easiest payment terms in the tri-county. I sold items with no problems and its easy breezy and profitable. John Turner and Billy Briggs has handled multi-million estates like the Pat Croce estate and other famous people like M Night Shyamalan movie item's sale within the lat six months. So if you in the area come on to Briggs people watch, gossip a little, oogle and bid at the things you never can afford, laugh at John Turners jokes and buy one nice thing per auction, rather than eat out at boring chain restaurant. auction hint #1-If the auctioneer doesn't see you just scream out your bid, say you or hey like on the TV shows (storage wars or auction hunters) remember Briggs is the place to be seen on Friday nights jammed packed with many locals catching up on gossip or just watching "the sale". Just want to say one thing about Briggs. If you are thinking of calling, PLEASE DON'T. Just run. We let them handle selling the contents of an entire home (large home) with many antiques and valuables. I am too embarrassed to say the amount of the check we received. Not only did everything feel like it was stolen, they even deducted the amount from the pocket change check for picking up the "stolen goods" from our home. After posting my review they responded by saying the fault was mine for not calling in, despite my assertion that I had already made multiple phone calls after John Turner's visit. Reading thru the reviews I notice I am not the only person to complain about the auctioneers, or to call them unprofessional. And I didn't even mention the sick looking cat that lays on the rugs and furniture you are trying to buy. It's a 3rd class organization with a better than deserved reputation. As I seller, I would not recommend! They will not work to ensure that the best price possible is obtained and will not provide any sort of estimate of value. I would have kept some things had I known, and I'm pretty sharp about the value of items. I did much better selling things on my own on eBay and at garage sales than I did with Briggs. And I did much better with another auctioneer when I sold my parents' household. I also have a sneaking suspicion that some of the sales by Briggs, while legal, may not have been entirely ethical. I also did not appreciate the haughty attitude. If you do use them, BE SURE to keep your OWN list AND photos of what you send for sale because they will not do this. You will get a list with the check later -- and no way to prove what you actually sent for sale. (This is typical of auctioneers.) If I could do it over, no way would I use this company. read more

I've been in the antiques business for 24 years, and my latest experience with Briggs Auction redefines the term "caveat emptor". I purchased a chest on chest from their last sale based on a condition report and several photos. When I drove to Briggs to pick it up I looked around for it in the showroom, but they insisted I pay first. After I paid I noticed it had been broken down and the top half was partially covered by blankets. I didn't think too much of it as I could see the fronts of both halves and the side of one and they looked fine. One of their employees quickly helped me put the two halves in my Highlander and I was off. However, when I arrived at home and took the chest out I discovered a fairly large piece of the bottom of the top half had been sheared off. No doubt this had occurred during breakdown after the sale as the photos provided by Live Auctioneers (the ones I based my bidding on) showed a perfectly sound case with no losses. Emails to an employee and a call to the owner were met with general disinterest. I have little doubt that they knew of the damages and decided to not disclose them. If you buy anything from this auction house via Live Auctioneers or another on-line service, please assume the same fate could befall your item as well and bid accordingly, or better yet don't bid at all unless you can attend the auction in person. read more

Target master is making a killing off of your customers in which you do have control of. A transfer for a gun is 15$ they make $ 15 dollars off of each gun how does that not effect the price of the gun. I don't understand your point. You have control of who does the transfers. By saying this, you don't care if target master is gouging your customers. And as far as your point on your auctioneers needing to communicate I see your point. But the fact is they constantly sush people to the point it's to much. If I can hear the bids your workers can here them to. I do enjoy Briggs but I feel these things need to be addressed read more

My experiences have been positive: As a buyer, you can find an amazing range of inventory in their weekly estate sales that run the gamut of merchandise, including some treasures. The buyer's premium is fair. It's an active and very social auction....the Friday timing of the sale makes it a meeting place for locals who have been attending for decades, so you may need to shout or wave your hand to get the auctioneer's attention, but the vibe is great. As a seller I've been really pleased with the results. There's no way of knowing what any item will go for (such is the nature of auction), but if anyone was going to get you a good price on an item, it's Briggs. The seller's premium is also fair and they pay faster than most other houses in the area. Dog friendly, too! read more

Went to Briggs this past weekend and picked up a few nice antiques with no issues. However, I did notice that several other people experienced this past Friday what I have previously experienced, even with several people yelling out to the auctioneer.. I am raising my review to a 3 star because this past weekend was enjyoble with no issues for myself or my husband. However, other reviewers should keep in mind that the purpose of yelp is not to review other people's comments such as mine was but to review your own experience with that place of business. My parents used to take me to Briggs Auction and Booths Corner over 50 years ago. Over the past 30 years, I've had the pleasure of taking my kids there and my daughter thinks it's the greatest place in the world. How many 16 year olds would rather go to an auction on a Friday night than the mall. The amount of history Briggs Auction offers each week is amazing. I've never seen a better collection of war memorabilia or rock and roll memorabilia than I have seen there in the past few months. Some of items they sell belong in museums. It!s that damn good. Amazing! Have I had bad experiences? Sure. But overall their entire staff does their best to accommodate everyone, especially the nice ladies who give you your number. Don't get caught up in a bidding frenzy. Remember the buyers premium and the sales tax and you could walk out a winner. After a few visits, you'll know everyone there...the furniture guy, the coin guy, the train guy or watch guy. And if you stay long enough you may become that guy. read more

On a recent auction, they're auctioneer (Red Head Woman) closed bidding and the hammer had fallen, she took our bid number and called it out our number and instructed the runner to bring our item to us. Then another person says "hey you missed my bid". Keep in mind, this person (I think she was a favorite ,customer) made no such bids and was not paying attention to the auction at all. We able see that she had not been bidding. The auctioneer reopened bidding for her. They're auctioneer had earlier in the evening refused another individual who made claims of a missed bid. They were the first ever auction venue that I attended, and all of the individuals that work there were so helpful and willing to take the time to explain things to me. I have since been to many more venues, and Briggs is by far my favorite. I could not disagree with the negative reviews more; I found them to have exemplary customer service, the absentee bids are administered professionally and accurately, and it was very organized and fair.
