Last summer I was in Portland and found a few stores like this, however, the merchants appeared to be outside of their minds as they were all charging $20 for $5 worth of merchandise. Sometimes it's clear what you are selling isn't rare, isn't collectable and you just bought it at Goodwill or a garage sale in hopes of tripling your money. Most of what I saw here was priced accordingly. There was an item or two that had a vintage look that wasn't vintage which could have been less, but no matter where you go, someone is trying to pull the wool over your eyes. This place is entirely out of the way, but I did discover a great taco spot across the street, so when the weather changes, it's possible I'll make a day out of hiking, shopping and tacos. Kudos to this shop owner. It's easy for a place like this to charge lunatic prices and offend shoppers, but the reasonable nature of this store is clearly the key to its high ratings and strong business flow.

Subsequently, I lost some interest since I don't live nearby. While I was in Ballard on a recent Sunday, I rushed to the market to see if it was still open. Officially, it was not; they closed at 2pm. But they were still packing up. I believe they are not allowed to sell after the official closing time; I asked one vendor, they declined. The staff wants the streets to reopen as soon as possible. As I walked the two blocks, several vendors still have some items on display on their tables. With a bit of wink, wink, accidentally dropping cash on the table and accidentally taking things off the table, I walked away with goodies. I won't say what I bought to avoid anyone getting into trouble. Street parking was easy enough nearby on a Sunday.

Packaged items such as honey and chips were also available. The Hot Sauce Festival was the main attraction of the day so there was a food truck on-site as well. Blistering hot pepper starts of several different varieties could also be purchased for those with green thumbs. Unfortunately, that isn't me. After sampling several fiery hot sauces and marinades it was refreshing to be able to order and consume an ice-cold craft beer from McMillin Farms brewery on-site. Red and white wine is available for those who do not care for beer. Beers were pricey at $8.75 each; however, keep in mind that you are supporting a small and local business. A bit of everything. The staff were pleasant. The store can be a bit overwhelming. You really have to 'look' carefully to see it all. You could spend a few minutes or a couple of hours. Out front they had a grocery cart holding the door open filled with 'free' treats. On this date, lemon pies that were approaching their expiration date. Every plant died or was suffering a slow death. Specialty soil came our home and did a soil analysis. The results showed our soil was 76% sand with almost no organic matter. That explained why we didn't have any worms... no organic matter for the worms to eat. We also had a serious mineral imbalance. Early spring Specialty Soils mixed up a custom mix of compost to address our very crappy soil. By the end of summer... we had worms and our newly planted plants were thriving!!! Every spring we add a beautiful layer of specially mixed organic mulch and in the fall we add a layer of well cooked manure. This has been a very successful process for us. Our soil is faithfully amazing! You can have complete faith and trust in the products created at Specialty Soil. The clerk called a manager named Elizabeth and she said she could not exchange it without a receipt, which I never got and did not have. I explained the above and said that I did not want any money, just a simple exchange. She refused and walked away! So now I am out not only a watermelon, but my time to return it. This place made me happy, because everything here was nice and useable, and the prices were undeniable. There were a couple sour faces in the crowd and the women with the Trump case on her phone appeared to be unhappy with my dark complexion in her community, but guess what, I don't care. What does matter if my money is green, so be thankful I a spending both time and money in your community.
