Sessions largely focused on validating feelings without providing structure, tools, challenge, or actionable guidance - all of which I repeatedly asked for. Given that this therapy was priced at the higher end of what we've seen, we expected a much deeper level of engagement and clinical depth. I consistently expressed that I did not feel understood, and that concern never felt meaningfully explored. The turning point came when JT continued asking the same questions and implied that I wasn't going deep enough. When I asked him to take a different approach and ask more thoughtful probing questions, he responded by asking me what I thought he should ask instead. That felt backwards. If he is the trained professional, I don't believe it should be my responsibility to determine how we get deeper in session. He also seemed dismissive of modalities like the Gottman Method and Nonviolent Communication, as well as the self-work I was doing independently. Despite repeatedly asking for homework or guidance between sessions, none was provided. We were looking for stronger direction and more skill-based, structured work, which is why we chose to move on. We're very happy with our new therapist, who also practices EFT but brings a broader, more versatile approach rather than relying on a singular method.
