Top Hat Bar - Bloody Mary open container specials for the 4th Parade! Uff'Dah!

If you've ever flown into Winnipeg, and looked out the right window of the plane at exactly the…read moreright time, then maybe you've caught a glimpse of Park River, ND... which is your loss, because this is one of those little towns on the high plains with the familiarity of a thousand others and a unique charm all its own. Nestled amidst the shops and cafes along the main drag through town, right across the street from the post office where the gal behind the counter knows everyone's name, is the Top Hat Bar. You'll recognize the sign by the larger Budweiser sign just below it, hanging out over the hundred year old sidewalk. Not sure if this was the same guys who ran the Top Hat Bar in neighboring Pisek, but I didn't ask. Inside, it's what you would expect of a small bar in a North Dakota town: quaint, comfortable, a mix old signs and pictures on the walls, probably a photo of someone holding a walleye in here. The usual offerings are served up here with hospitality to slake your thirst. Cold beer, a full bar, and a friendly sort of vibe, even if you're from Kale-ifoornya, dontchaknow. On July 4, the parade heads right through town in front of the bar, and it seems local law enforcement (most of them are in the parade) are lax about stepping outside with your Bloody Mary in a plastic cup. Uff'dah, you betcha. Great place to stop in if you're out exploring the high prairie, and need to wash the dust outta your throat.

Opened in February 2007 by a Scotland born husband and wife team who decided that this growing…read moreMennonite city needed some British influence. Located on the main drag, this cozy pub serves as one of the popular locations to grab a few drinks with your mates or dine in for a quick lunch with co-workers, and dinner with your family with more drinks in the evening. In the summer months they open up a small area on the sidewalk for your outdoor dining enjoyment. Right when you walk in, you have the bartender mixing drinks and tending to the few occupied stools at the counter and those playing darts. The hostess will gladly seat you at one of the tables along the windows or booths along the far wall in their restaurant "section". I use " " because the restaurant portion for this pub, for all ages, forms an L-shaped seating plan. The 18+ section is separated by a short black iron fence in the middle that holds a few more tables and larger booths. Sawney Beans is like any other pub with their weekday Pub Grub specials. One of the favorites is Tuesday for Pub Poutinerie Night - How Canadian of them ;) Another favorite are the Irish Nachos (Waffle fries, loaded with tomatoes, jalapenos, green onions and cheese with the option of adding chicken or beef for an extra charge) It's a small kitchen so they have a lunch menu that changes at 5pm for dinner. The lunch menu is small and not really British authentic but when i'm craving their delicious Chicken Quesadillas, this is the time to get them. Their dinner menu features more British Pub eating with titles like: - Bangers and Mash - Roast Beef dinner with Yorkshire Puddings - Shepherd's Pie - London's Burning Burger (ok not authentic but still yummy with a little heat) For a sweet tooth my favorite is: - Sticky Toffee Pudding with vanilla ice cream Another interesting option would be their deep fried Mars bar The bar serves up a variety of British ales as well as some domestic bottles. There's a decent wine list and a variety of British mixed cocktails and ciders. My personal favorite - Cider and Blackcurrent (Floundry Cider with a shot of Blackcurrent cordial) Two glasses in and I'm walking home feeling warm and tingly from my head to my toes! Steinbach, once a dry town, has succumbed to the British invasion and given the residents and surrounding communities a great place to eat and wet their whistles. The first time I went we were put in a booth that had higher wallsand I felt very claustrophobic. The second time I went I went with a group of 8 and felt like they could barely accommodate us. It was very tight. We barely fit. Go elsewhere if you are more than 4 people. The other thing is that the music can be pretty loud. But it is supposed to be a pub. So that can be expected. The food tastes good but with higher prices, I would rather go elsewhere where I don't feel like a sardine.
