The reason for adding this to the review is we struggled to find any interesting bars. This though is one I would recommend trying if you in the city and looking for something a bit more modern. Staff are not very friendly, but they do their jobs well enough. There is a decent mix of local draft and some strange bottled beers. I guess the two major plus points is they bring you 4 or 5 plates of nibbles free of charge to have with your drinks. Peanuts, olives, crisps, bread sticks and fresh bread all landed on our table and with a bottle of beer for under 3 euros, you can't really complain. Worth a looking and a beer if you find yourself in Trieste.

This place is a coffee and doughnut bakery but I didn't want a doughnut, instead I opted for Mille - feuille and a few small, fruit tarts with my espresso macchiato - macchiato means mark or stain so in this case the stain is the texturised, heated milk on top. Mille-feuille which is known as vanilla slice in the UK and Napoleon in the USA was delicious as were the small tarts. The last one I had was in a delightful French cafe in San Clemente California where it was Mille-feuille and not Napoleon. So the way it usually plays out for us is that I find a coffee place while my wife goes shopping. When I get pastries we cut them in two and we can try out a few different varieties and it's all very pleasant. Doing this with great coffee in hot sunshine is an added bonus. The service was friendly and prompt too. Downtown Trieste was buzzing with locals as it's not yet a huge tourist destination. We spent a week there and had a great time. I'm delighted to say that we are due to return here in November and as all time flies it won't be very long. And do remember we'll run out of time before we run out of money.

In the summer the courtyard is filled with tables and it's a joy to eat outside! In the winter the inside hall is huge and can host a lot of tables too. The dishes are amazing and they offer a few vegetarian dishes (make sure you tell them that you're vegetarian because they will sometimes use the meat broth to cook). Wine is also pretty good (you have to try their Vitovska!) and the staff is really nice and friendly. Desserts are really good and make sure you order some Terrano liqueur as a digestive. When you're done with the meal you can go visit the animals in the back yard: Pigs, dogs, geese, goats and horses!

Stop in for a bite to rest your feet and people-watch. Two floors, a big screen TV, nice lounging areas for small groups, and a popular outdoor seating area. The indoor seating was clean, attractive and recently upholstered. Don't think of sitting outdoors unless you're a smoker too. Our server was super hospitable and found us something to eat even though we had arrived prior to dinner time (7:30 pm). Apparently only drinking occurs in the late afternoon in Trieste, because we couldn't find any downtown restaurants serving dinner at the time most Americans want to eat their evening meal.
