In St. John's (in their current location on Water Street), I found the Newfoundland Crafts Council store and had the pleasure of visiting it a couple times during our stay here. The selection did not disappoint, as I came away with a nice forged letter opener from the Green Family Forge (Trinity) and a nice St. John's house magnet from Northeastern Folk Art. I could have easily done more "damage", but it was early in our trip and I needed to pace myself.

Judge your time well and give yourself opportunity to check out all that there is on the various floors. It is very easy to get stuck in an area of the house which contains all manner of wonderous things - and then you lose all sense of time and before you know it you've spent an hour looking at the rug hooking kits and have less time elsewhere. True story! Happened to a, uhm, friend of mine.... Perfect place to get a gift for someone away. Or for someone local. Or for yourself. Follow them on Facebook. On Feb 10 and 11, Chef to Go offered one of the best 5 course meals that I have ever tasted. From the local smoked salmon and brie tarte, to the squash soup with carmelized pears on the bottom and stabilized beer foam on the top, to the melt-in-your mouth pork prepared by the sous-vide method, to the perfectly cooked white fleshed turbot on peas pudding ( with a hint of wasabi), to the beet ice cream --everything was supurb! And for the roughy 16 patrons each night, all served in a warm and inviting dining room . All this for only $200 a couple. A friend asked how we had "scored" an invitation to this dinner. It was easy--just check the website or call and ask Bob about his next dinner. My only concern about writing this review is that we may not be able to " score" a ticket for the next occassion. But something this good is meant to be shared.

I left the shop with a nice set of watercolor cards and a book featuring gorgeous Newfoundland scenery. I also learned a lot about Newfoundland itself and how to better approach Gayle and my visit. In the end, she was right. Our memories of Newfoundland were the landscape, the people, and the charming towns - as opposed to specific attractions.
