To Improve: First, fire whoever's in charge of "cleaning" your pools and hot tub. They're not doing their job. In the last three months I have yet to experience clean water. Try removing algae from the main pool. Try getting more than two of the jets working in the hot tub. How long has it been since they worked? Try fixing whatever's wrong with the usually cold pool behind the hot tub which is now covered in slime, sludge, some moldy looking substance, leaves, and general debris. The members at the gym are friendly and warm. I have made a lot of friends there. But I give the staff one star for their poor service. Through the four years I have been a member with them, I always have a hard time with payments. About two years ago, my work discount with them ended. I asked if I could convert back to their regular monthly dues, but they told me I had to re-enroll and pay the new monthly fees. I was unhappy about it, but stayed for my friends. When it was time to cancel, they did not let me know there would be an extra charge for the following month, when I spoke to them ahead of time. If you decide to use this gym, be very cautious about their payments. They like to raise prices, and they do not appreciate their members. read more

I had called back in May to ask about swim lessons for my two young children and initially had a wonderful experience over the phone. The lady on the phone answered all my questions in regards to price, their policies, and about the outdoor pool which is heated. She told me to come in and fill out an inquiry sheet and they would reach out to schedule. Went down there a few days later to fill out my paperwork and again had a positive encounter. I waited a week before reaching back out as I hadn't heard from anyone and gave the employee my info again over the phone. He said that once they coordinated the times with the swim coaches they would call me. The call never came. I visit Modesto frequently and need a place to work out while in town. I looked all over for the best day pass deal, and had a terrible experience at another gym in town before I came back to the tried-and-true BAC - the very club where I learned how to swim and to play tennis as a kid. My family has had a membership here for over 30 years so I kicked myself for not thinking of coming here first. This visit (May 2018), I was training for a century ride back in Utah and needed to be on the bike every day but couldn't find any local places to rent and didn't want to lug my bike on the plane. I saw BAC had spin classes and when I called, the employee on the phone helpfully told me they offer day passes for only $10 (what?! Planet Fitness is $20!) and the pass is also valid for 24-hours so I could essentially get a two-day pass for $10. BEST deal in town, people. Also, since I wanted to use the pass every day, I knew I wouldn't make all the spin classes, but they also have two spin bikes in the side cardio room, AND with a view of the pool! Total win here. One of the bikes wouldn't adjust but the other worked great and I was able to get in all my training days during my visit. I visited one morning spin class led by an older gentleman and it was awesome. Great variety of music, a hard workout, and the class was only half full with regulars, so they all bantered and joked in between songs. BAC always feels like family and this class was no different. A huge weight room, two cardio rooms, with lots of equipment. I was here at all hours of the day - morning, after work, afternoons - and it was never crowded. It's not intimidating or show-offy and I like that there are separate rooms so you can get privacy if you want. The club has been remodeled, which was nice to see, but it's not as shiny and fancy as some other gyms, as some have mentioned. The bathrooms are a little cramped, but they have plenty of locker space and saunas in both locker rooms (love gender-separated saunas). The hot tub is right outside the restrooms. The lap pool is a lot bigger than the one I visited at another gym, and outdoor, which is way nicer than indoor ones, plus three smaller pools for the kiddos. Lots of lounge chairs and tables. The best part is that BAC feels local and friendly. There is no "upselling" or sales-pitching here. It's family-friendly, too, which means, yes, kids will probably be in the pool, but when you have kids, you'll appreciate a place where you can bring yours. This gym has a beautiful pool and outdoor swimming is wonderful. However for the last 5 or 6 years the pools heating system has been insufficient and the pool is not usable for a few weeks or more each winter. This is understandable if it happens once in awhile but not every year for 6 years. The same excuse is told to us over and over. "the part is on order" or the wrong part came in or the person that installs the part is not available until ???? The owner of this gym needs to make a serious evaluation of the ongoing. I am so sorry to be losing members that are transferring to In shape because of this and the treatment they receive by the manager when they complain. I hope the gym stays solvent but I'm afraid that the loss of so many of our aqua class students will make a big impact. When I first joined the gym for the water aerobics class I was told the pool will be 80 degrees. Over the years with all the heater breakdowns we are now being told the pool will be maintained at between 75 to 78 degrees. This temperature is not acceptable to many of us. I hope the owner of this gym will look at what is happening and invest in a better heating system. read more

It sucks because the staff is always nice and the people that train here are all respectful and polite. Overall good vibe and never too busy but this is ridiculous. I've been going for about 2 months now and I was told the pool was cleaned twice a month, but I haven't seen it cleaned once since joining. There's an insane amount of dirt at the bottom of the pool, and I've seen dead cockroaches floating at the bottom of the pool, wads of hair, and probably a couple wagons worth of loose dirt on the bottom of the pool. The only cleaning I've noticed is when they put so much chlorine in the pool that I can't even see where I'm swimming with goggles on. If this keeps up I plan on switching gyms. read more

I have seen 1 star reviews about this place but I still went to try it out and to support this business because i just live nearby. I enrolled and paid swimming lessons for my son and was told to wait for the instructor to contact me. 3 weeks had past and no one contacted me so i went there to follow it up. The following morning we were able to do the first lesson (30 mins). Since I knew that everyone was busy with their own schedule, I had asked their instructor to set a schedule for the remaining 7 sessions. I even asked this instructor to schedule my son twice a day, if able. But they were unable to produced the schedule. After two weeks, I received a text message informing me the instructor's availability, so we set the appointment. The day before the appointment, I texted the instructor confirming the appointment but only to find out that he's unable make it. I then went to their facility (BAC) to cancel the remaining lessons but told me to send an email to their payroll. I sent a cancellation request along with the proofs that I made efforts to schedule the remaining lessons to their payroll but they never replied back. Now, my creditor is representing me to get my money back! By the way, there was another upset customer at the front desk trying to cancel membership at BAC while I was waiting. AND, I noticed that the main pool was dirty. My son wanted to go to the kiddie pool after his swimming lesson but i did not let him. The kiddie pool was very dirty and there were rotten leaves floating around. Read other reviews before you go there! read more

Update, since my last review where I mentioned they needed to fix their tennis lights on the courts they actually brought someone out to replace them, too bad that took months of the lights being out and they didn't even replace all of them. Currently, there are lights out again and the light on court 2 has been out since last October which means it has almost been a year. This is absolutely ridiculous, this club needs to at least have properly functioning lights on the court if they are trying to market themselves as a gym with tennis courts. I have already had friends who have quit this club because they do not take care of their facility like the tennis courts. Also they started locking up the group exercise room when classes are not in session because apparently the group exercise instructors were tired of picking up after people. This is a dumb excuse, there is barely enough room in the gym during the non peak times and now they are closing off more room. Why don't you give people a warning to pick up after themselves before shutting down an area of the gym for people who pay for a membership. Another suggestion is have someone be designated to clean up equipment before the group exercising instructors arrive. This gym does not care about what their members want or the facility. read more

I have made a massage appt for my cousin from out of state, which means we can enter the gym without a entry fee. While waiting for the appointment, I took her to the treadmill for like 20 mins. This rude employee that checked us in was searching for us and told us that we have to pay $20. We were only using the treadmill for like a little bit. It's ridiculous how much prices have gone up for this gym. When I signed up, my cost per month is $35. It went up to $55 without letting me know and they wanted to charge me a Cancellation fee if I cancelled. This place consists of poor management, rude customer service, and dirty facility. My contract is up in April and I'm cancelling for good. I won't be recommending this place to any of my friends and family. read more

An aging facility that is currently not maintained as it was in the past. The men's locker room is disgusting, there are missing wall tiles in the shower, many areas within the grout lines have black mold growing. Missing soap dispense. The facility is great - we loved the multiple pools, yoga classes and Kids Zone. But the customer service is terrible and it's apparently impossible to cancel your membership. (Which is ridiculous in this day and age when consumers have so many options for health and fitness.) Brenda Athletics, if you want to stay in business here in Modesto I suggest you improve communication with your clients and stop charging an annual fee and multiple months of club fees to someone who has clearly stated they are moving to another gym. $10 day pass (apparently valid for 24 hours). Perfect for out of town visitors to Modesto. We were looking for a pool to enjoy and since the forecast was rain (but it ended up being a sunny day) we had the entire pool to ourselves! The pool is outdoors. The pool and locker rooms were decent but not as clean as can be. Definitely 4 out of 5 stars. I saw some rust on the pool floor and the changing room wasn't sparkly clean. The venue was clean enough but there's room for improvement. There are no life guards on duty and there aren't any kids toys for the pool so bring your own. They have a ton of fitness equipment and a large studio that you can use if it's free. For $10, you can't go wrong here. They have a kiddie pool as well as a sauna and hot tub. They charge an entrance fee for all ages so there are no discounts for kids. They also have a childcare option. read more

I highly recommend this club! The tennis clinics are great fun! I really enjoyed having another club member scream at me and threaten to hit me ... adds a extra layer of fun to the clinic. And the tennis pro standing there apologizing for the other person's bad behavior all the while doing nothing to stop them or asking them to leave - well that just adds to the excitement! And its definitely the place to go play tennis on the weekends - the alcohol consumption going on there is like no other! Lots of intoxicated adults hanging around while people are hitting tennis balls to their kids on other courts. The pool however - that is a different story. Nice shaded areas, abundance of lounge chairs, and areas for both the kids and for adults to lap swim. read more

I was a member for about 6 months. The equipment is older, but everything you would need is there. For a while, the 6:00 TRX class in the morning was a lot of fun. Then people stopped showing up, I think the trainer was okay, but I found it very repetitive and a group of younger adults left including myself. So why the 1 star review? I called last week about cancelling my membership and they told me I had to come in to do so. The following day I came in and filled out all the forms to cancel. I was told by the guy in front that it was too late in the month and that I would be required to pay for the next month's fees as well. I understood. I asked specifically if that would be all the fees and he assured me that would be it. He had my account pulled up on his computer screen and everything, no speculative response here, he was concrete in his answering of my question. I just got off the phone today (a few days after I cancelled) with another employee who informed me there would be an additional $100 charged to my credit card because I did not meet the minimum 1 year requirement. To me, this is incredibly suspicious. I pointed out to her the employee I cancelled with and how he assured me there would be no charges and she basically said he was unaware and she had caught his mistake. I don't like being misinformed and it's not good business on their part. I am convinced it is a ploy to get additional money from me. Even if they are 100% correct in charging me, though, you should not have an employee misinforming members. That is a direct reflection of the management. Not a singles bar atmosphere. Mostly older folks just trying stay fit, and enjoying themselves. Never super crowded. The pool is huge, and there is always room in it. I have been a member on and off of Brenda in Modesto for over 8 years and not by choice. It is the only gym with an outdoor lap swim pool in Modesto and it has or at least had the capacity of being used year round. Every year I have been a member the "year round heated pool" has broken down during November- February. Either the pump is broken leaving the pool unfiltered and disgusting or the heater is broken leaving the pool freezing and making people use wetsuits or the chlorinator is broken leaving the pool unsafe to swim in. Their pool maintenance team has changed up so much and it is obvious they DO NOT know how to maintain a pool to safely run aquatic programs. They also clearly do not know how to properly manually dump chlorine and soda ash into a pool when their auto chlorinator and ph feeder are down. Before change in management years ago the pool was maintained properly and was busy year round. Now it is disgusting. So sad to see such a wonderful pool go to waste. If you are signing up for the pool, I recommend not doing so. read more

My review at Brenda Athletics Club is for my swimming lessons experience. Although the prices are reasonable I suggest going somewhere else. The facility is nice and clean but run by twenty year olds and the most unprofessional manager I ever met. After having a bad swimming lesson experience after the first four days we wanted to cancel and be pro rated for the days we missed. Heres the reasons why. 1.The instructor was never on time, didn't know what he was doing (just winging it) 2. Did not get two instructors as promised (for level 1 and level 2 classes) 3. There was five kids during first day of class (was told only four kids per level) 4. Third class was canceled but didn't get a phone call (btw i live in twenty minutes away and i had my one month old with me) 5. Fourth class was a brand spanking new instructor (being trained during our 25 minute lesson) Its hard to make this long story short because there is so much to say about my customer experience. After numerous phone calls, messages, emails and a WEEK later trying to get ahold of the manager I finally get ahold Yesenia after reaching her at the Turlock BAC. She gets on the phone and apologizes for the circumstances and how the first week of lessons is not how she wanted to reflect on the company. She informed me that she would give us a FULL refund and she would call me back later that afternoon to get the credit card info after she gets back to the modesto facility. No phone call later I call and she's wasn't there yet. Call again and was told she was gone for the day. So first thing next morning i call and ask to speak to Yesenia. I wait for a long while on the phone and instead of Yesenia, Liz (the swimming coordinator) answers the phone and tells me my punch two punch cards (worth only $100, my pro rated refund should've been $178) were ready for pick up. By this time I was furious, I wasn't getting full refund as promised and now I was only going to get $100 back to use at this gym? I demanded to speak to Yesenia but Liz claims she was busy on the other phone, and I say I would wait. Finally she gets on and states that she is going to honor my husbands request to get pro rated and give us three punch cards worth $150 (from an email that she didn't respond to from a week prior) instead of giving my full refund. At this point i didn't want to get pro rated, and why would I. I waited a whole week to get this resolved and she NEVER called us back. She tells me that she talked to corporate and was already approved for the punch cards and that I couldnt get my full credit card refund and that she didn't know my husbands emails and my phone call from previous day were for the same situation (blah blah blah). I ask her for the corporate number which she gives me and after numerous phone calls and messages no phone call back either. So after a week of frustration my husband decides just to get the punch cards. In total the swimming classes came out to $285 for our three kids and we only got $150 back, losing $135 for lessons that just wasted our time and money. I will never step foot at BAC again, my husband and kids will be using these cards. This Modesto facility would be so much better if it were run by a manager who was more professional, who would respond to customers phone calls/emails in a timely manner, who doesn't have her staff lie on the phone that she is busy or gone for the day. Who doesn't have staff call customers for her or get on the phone pretending to be her. Who doesn't lie to customers. Honestly I feel bad for her staff. If this facility had a new manger that actually does her job and employees that know how to teach swimming lessons correctly then this would gym would actually worth going too. =P read more
