I first visited the BRC when my son was three weeks old, and I wish I'd gone in sooner. People will tell you breastfeeding is hard, and that's sort of true -- but I'd call it strange. You'd think it's instinctual for both mom and baby, but it's tough for a first-timer to tell if things are going well. I thought we were doing fine, but my baby wasn't gaining enough weight. The pediatrician recommended the BRC for help.
When I called for an appointment, they gave me a few tips over the phone and I came in the next day for a consultation. The lactation consultant checked the baby's mouth and latch and helped with how to hold the baby. When we left, there was still a lot of work to do to increase my supply, but the consultant was very reassuring that it could be done. Sure enough, we've had a complete turnaround!
The BRC also hosts weekly support groups for moms, and these are great. You can ask questions of your peers, and there's an IBCLC around to chime in with expertise as well. All the staff is friendly and encouraging -- you can tell they love their jobs.
They also have a retail shop with pumps and nursing accessories (pillows, bras, tops) and they offer classes (first aid, sleep, feeding/weaning). Some items and services may be covered under insurance as part of PPACA. Don't be shy like I was -- come to the BRC early if you think you need help or support! read more
