Our nightlife is what makes our city and I really hope the provincial and federal government get together behind some actual coordinated support for these crucial local businesses. I used to live near Hemisphere gauche and have walked by all kinds of different crowds gathered outside, it's so awesome to see how different kinds of communities can feel welcomed in live music venues and bars and I love walking by and feeling, not just unthreatened, but somehow welcomed in their midst. I've sat on the window ledge here and enjoyed a cheep beer and the people watching, and I've rolled in here with a crew of badass lady friends after another bar closed and the staff let us take over their karaoke set up and drink whiskey and sing all our frustrations out till closing time, no fuss.

Last night at 12:30 as people pushed around the bar the tough Quebecoise old school bar back kept up a smile and did a better job of keeping track of who was due their booze next than many a trendy cocktail lounge one might name, and cracked jokes and complimented the home made muffins on the bar to boot. Jameson at $5.50, bottle of water at a dollar, bag o chips a buck fifty, ie; no jimmyriggery in the prices of things had my adorable companion declaring it her favourite bar as she prepared for a long night of shows and shows and work on shows and shows... Speaking of the show: we left the bar and pushed up front to join the crowd at the "stage" by the window wondering how the sound would be. Not least because this was no solo acoustic set but the full DIY electro playfulness of a Fixture records showcase: open computer bodies and VHS tapes being played and layered over drum machines and loops and pedals, and you know from what I saw and heard it all worked out. None of the sudden tonal anarchy we were getting from the system at Cagibi earlier in the evening where, let's face it, the wiring is way too old for amps and keys and things. Beaubien held it down and made it's smiling old folks, hustling to bring in ice and serve the kids, well proud. I hope the rest of Pop is a mad success for them and they continue to be a space for great live music up here north of the underpass. Long live Beaubien.

Bar Le "Ritz" PDB at 179 Jean Talon O. is a friendly, welcoming, neighbourhood bar. Lots of dance floor room. I particularly like the Acid Dreams (acid/house/electro/techno) 100% vinyle + live set! event that is a fairly regular event happening once every month or two on a Friday night with DJ SARCASTIC and DJ INYOURFACE along with some special invites. Must be something about electronic music that attracts a peaceful, friendly crowd that enjoys dancing!

We should have recorded it. Other patrons were laughing so hard and amazed by our improvisation. I really appreciate the care and diligence the staff put into making sure I was safe in Montreal especially since I was a solo female traveler. Parking was easier than other Montreal areas. I was able to dine at a restaurant prior to the show. The bar didn't have food service. I will definitely go back when I revisit Montreal. I felt safe.

I was not happy with that but since I was there by myself maybe it was to be expected? The place reminded me of The Green Mill here in Chicago, another intimate jazz club, except they serve food here as well. I had eaten earlier so I only got drinks. I sampled one of the local beers and had a cocktail. The bartender was helpful and friendly. The Alex Bellegarde Trio came on and were great. Other guests came up for a jam session, one of my favorite things about jazz. The place was not easy to find on public transportation, but maybe that's bc I took the train and walked. The area was nice, artsy and busy even at 11:30 at night. I'd go back next time I am in Montreal, but maybe take a Lyft or Uber.

Wooden tables, friendly if un-hurried service, free wifi. They've basically expanded all the great things they used to offer and still have reasonably priced, delicious beers available. However, they have made one more important change. They have $1 tacos available on Tuesday. They're delicious. Sure, they're small and about all you'd expect for $1 but they're GOOD. Meat and veggie options are available and if you don't check it out you're missing out!
