Enzo is by far the best children's music teacher I have ever encountered and I have been an elementary school teacher/ nanny for over 15 years. If you have little kids & they like music, check this out! You'll also enjoy the music too. Enzo sings while he plays 5-string banjo, musical saw, harmonica, guitar, & accordion. He is quite talented & interacts well with little kids, & I would hope so, because he teaches classes for little kids (LMNO Music), but I can't comment on the classes because I haven't been to any. Anyway, if I had kids, I'd take them! Well, I'll have to bring any local kids that I'm "auntie" to....hmmm, I can think of a few candidates. I wish he'd do more shows for grownups, because I'd definitely go! I think he did one or two when I first moved back to the Bay Area, but I wasn't able to go. I initially checked him out because I like music & heard about him because his dad was one of my mentors at work in Michigan. I found out that dad had a son out in SF, which is where I was moving back to (close enough, anyway), who is a musician, so I asked more about him. I went to one of his shows in Bernal Heights; at the time he was playing at Progressive Grounds, a coffeehouse. I actually took one of my adult friends, because she's a banjo fan. Of course, after the show, we introduced ourselves to him. He wasn't surprised & figured that I'd show up at some point, because his dad had mentioned our conversations to him. After I saw him, I ended up buying some CDs to send to some of my friends' kids as gifts! I bought them off CD Baby online, where you can also sample the CDs. It looks like he currently usually does Saturday shows 10am-12noon at The Bernal Heights Neighborhood Center which is 515 Cortland near Andover ($5/person). Unfortunately the music class was too loud for our family. We stayed for just about 10 minutes and my daughter seemed uncomfortable and my ears hurt. I used a decibel measuring app (called sound meter) in the back of the Room for a brief moment and got an average of 94 decibels. I did not feel comfortable staying for even a short exposure period. My infant had on baby Banz thankfully but my toddler did not. We won't be returning. read more

I have been to see Enzo several times with my now five-month old. It is indeed great to be able to drop in to this music show. There is not actually any food or breakfast, but Enzo is quite a good musician and has some very good songs in his line-up. The show seems a little hit-or-miss. I've been to some excellent shows - and also to some that were really kind of lackluster. The biggest negative is that Enzo can sometimes be a bit of a grump. I was rather turned off about a month ago when I went to class and Enzo spent most of the time chastising some moms for talking too much. I am all for respecting the performer. He seemed to come down on these ladies kind of unusually hard though. He also got particularly ticked off at a child who wanted to touch one of his instruments. I went back last week and was having a nice time. At the end of the show, Enzo invited the kids up to give him a high five. A bunch of little ones walked up to him for their high five. I thought this was really sweet and fun. As I was sitting near the front, I stood up so that my little daughter could get a little high five too. Enzo refused the high five and told me, "Volunteers Only." Didn't I feel like an idiot!! I get that he doesn't want every mom bringing their baby up. I was right there in front of him though and didn't think it would be that big a deal - especially as it was the end of the show and most people had already left. read more

When my kids were small, we went to Enzo almost every week. It was a great way to see friends in the neighborhood, and they were delighted to run up and shake his hand at the beginning and end of the show. We have a lot of favorite songs from these days that we STILL sing. It's sort of like a kid rave some mornings. The best thing about Enzo is that he's not your typical kid-performer. He doesn't manufacture fakey energy or kiss up to the kids by being ersatz-goofy. This could possibly come across as lethargy to people who are used to Barney-style energy at kids' performances. My son, Jake, and I went to Enzo pretty much every Friday for 18 months until he started preschool. I even hired Enzo to play at my son's 3rd birthday party (which was phenomenal and extremely reasonable by the way). Let's get the obvious out of the way - Enzo's music is great. He's an extremely talented musician . Most of his stuff is original (or adapted) and thoroughly enjoyable. My son, almost 3 years later, still sings about sawing logs and two little bunnies. Enzo left an indelible mark in the best way possible. Now onto some of the comments reviewers have made about his personality. If you're looking for an over-the-top, in-your-face, saccharin sweet kind of performer, Enzo's not your guy. He's chill and he's authentic. What I love most is that he lets the music do the talking. For my son, that couldn't have been more perfect. We went to three other music classes where the teacher was trying so hard that my son nearly made skid marks looking for the exit. Perhaps he's misunderstood by the reviewers who make these comments. He doesn't do what he does, week after week, for the adults. He does it passionately for the kids. He's aware that music lives in each child and it's not up to us (meaning parents, caregiver, or even Enzo) to help them find it. They don't need us to teach them the words, be overly enthusiastic (unless of course we truly are), clap their hands for them, or bounce them up and down. Enzo Garcia creates music that engages children, teaches them motor skills and rhythm, and -- this is the important part -- is fun for adults as well. If you are ready to shove a pencil in your ear if you have to listen to "Wheels on the Bus" one more time, get yourself to Enzo. He plays a variety of instruments, ranging from the immediately recognizable banjo, guitar and accordion, to the more unique saw (played with a violin bow), jaw harp and Enzotar (an instrument of Enzo's own creation). His songs include some traditional pieces, such as Froggy Went a Courtin, or Frere Jacque, as well as a bunch of Enzo's own orignal tunes. And Enzo writes some pretty cool songs. Some of his stuff is extremely simple, with no music, just his percussive voice. On CD it sounds questionable, but paired with the hand motions he does with them they become captivating for kids. I know, Little Q first obsessed on The Pizza Song, a prime example of how simplistic lyrics and age-appropriate hand motions can engage a child. Enzo also encourages parents to let children learn at their own pace, and not force them to participate - knowing that kids will start to mimic what they see on their own time. His Breakfast With Enzo concerts are a wonderful introduction to the parenting community in San Francisco. When you have a child in SF you're told, "Good luck, you might as well move to the East Bay." Breakfast with Enzo is a great outing to take with your toddler on a Friday (Fort Mason) or Saturday (Bernal Heights) morning. My daughter is enthralled by the different instruments that Enzo uses and the variety of songs from slow to raucous! The big difference for me, as a parent, between Enzo and other music programs is that Enzo's show is given on a drop-in basis. So often in San Francisco, you are pressured to get your kid signed up for all the "right" activities. Often to do that, you have to sign your child up for a $400, 12 week commitment and get on a waiting list to even participate. It's refreshing that Enzo doesn't follow that model. My son and I are very happy to have found Enzo's music class! We were killing time in the Mission admiring a fire truck when a lady shared with us that there is a music show for children nearby. So we checked it out and have been back several times. Enzo is super talented and both kids and adults enjoy his music sets. It is also very affordable ($6 per person). Wow, Enzo is patronizing! In one class he chastised a mom for texting (I think she was actually taking a video of her kid), he instructed another mom on the proper way to use jingle bells (not kidding!), and he lectured the moms on not letting the kids touch his instruments. I understand that some of the electric instruments etc may be dangerous but if that's the case don't leave them out on the floor in front of toddlers! His music is cute but monotone, and I think the primary thing he has going for him is a rather large collection of props (bells, rattles and scarves). He didn't seem particularly friendly or warm. Kid music that wont make yo tear out your hair! Enzo is great with kids, and plays awesome music that adults can enjoy. He has a bluegrass feel to a lot of his stuff, and plays accordion, banjo, guitar, harmonica and about a million other instruments really well. I've been taking my kids to the Saturday morning Breakfast With Enzo for a few years, and we took an LMNO music class as well. I like how he connects with the kids. He knows their names, puts them in the songs, has them up and dancing; they really engage with him. We have 6 of his CD's and I enjoy them as much as the kids do. He can get a little cranky with the adults if you are chatting through his set instead of singing along with your kid (he is a performer!), so remember what you are there for. read more

The ongoing performance, which sprouted from a late-night session at the Mission Creek Café on Valencia Street in 2002, features Garcia performing traditional and original children's music -- accompanied by guitar, banjo, accordion, jaw harp and musical saw. TIMING: An early start "Breakfast with Enzo" -- which was coined by Garcia's friend Zoli Lundy -- first occurred at an after-hours party in the Mission. "It was at the tail end of a party and the DJs had stopped spinning -- as well as the heads of many of the folks in attendance," Garcia said. "I pulled out my guitar and began singing my songs to the remaining guests of the party. Zoli chimed in, 'It's breakfast with Enzo.'" A self-taught musician, Garcia, 37, arrived to the Bay Area after graduating from the University of Michigan -- at which he found a calling for playing to kids and families. "While living in Ann Arbor, I started a band with my friend and fiddle player Matt Combs called Drivetrain. We would play at cider mills in the fall during harvest and entertain hundreds of families. Enzo has been doing this for years and is amazing with all of the instruments he plays, songs to sing-a-long to, bells and rattles for the lil ones to shake and colorful scarfs to be visually stimulated with. Overall a great fun experience for my child and myself. I think his new standards and guidelines is well needed as some folks need a reminder on etiquette and behavior, especially towards someone who is entertaining and sharing music with you, babies and toddlers. I have to agree that Enzo's music is lovely but his attitude toward parents and children still just isn't. We've seen him a few times and it really is just too stressful for me, how on edge he is. Try it for yourself but I've found that for $12, I'd rather buy a nice pastry and coffee, sit in a park, and let my kid be a kid. Perhaps music appreciation will come naturally later. Breakfast with Enzo is a mixed bag- while his music was great and my daughter (9 months old at the time of our visit) really loved the music and watching the other kids, Enzo's attitude and heavy hand was very off putting to me. I leaned over and asked my other mommy friend for a Kleenex and then a wet wipe during the performance and was chastised by Enzo for "talking"... Also afterwards he asked if we had paid ( which we had) and given a look like we were stealing or something. I think the fee is a little high and I will happily go to a different music class where I don't feel like I walking on egg shells to appease the performer. Maybe I am just too sensitive but for a kids activity he just seemed to be pretty strict. read more

I recently took my 13 month old daughter to Enzo's at the sports Basement. We entered a jam packed room and our hopes were high........and then Enzo brought out his hand held and started reading his scripted speech from it LOL!! During his rather patronizing speech he proceeded to tell us how me must not have our children clap etc ; that it should come naturally blah blah blah Please Mr. Enzo stick to your music and let the parents do the parenting! Throughout the session he continued to call out on moms who's kids were just being kids and were merely inquisitive and walking around by themselves exploring or maybe touching his instruments in a harmless, inquisitive way. I dont know, his whole approach was really off; almost like he was putting up with the kids and just couldn't wait till the session was over. He did play some very good music. Unfortunately, he killed the whole experience with to his patronizing approach. I couldn't wait to get out of there. I have been to way more fun music sessions elsewhere. read more

Yay Enzo! I've taken my 3 year-old daughter to a few dozen performances at both Sports Basement and Bernal Community Center, since she was about 18 months old, and we have never been disappointed. Enzo is a gifted musician, arranger and composer. He plays some original music and many unique renditions of traditional and classic songs especially appropriate for kids. The result is music that kids love and parents can listen to repeatedly without being driven to want to pierce their own eardrums. More importantly, the arrangements are generally more interesting and often subtle than 99% of "kids' music" out there. I'd expect that this cultivates a more sophisticated interest and understanding of music than listening only to The Wiggles and their ilk. His performances are always fun, too. He has a friendly and understated demeanor to which kids seem to respond quite well. He definitely performs for the children, but often relays quick stories or dry one liners that are clearly intended for the adults in attendance. The performances are usually laid back, with a tolerance for wandering and babbling toddlers. This makes for one of few realistic performance options if one's kid is really small or in a particularly unfocused phase. Enzo does have expectations that the adults keep some control over their children and themselves during the performances, and will often remind the audience of this fact. He will sometimes address certain actions (texting during show, for example), but I've never seen him single out a particular person. Similarly, I've seen him very gently block a child from grabbing one of his instruments while singing and playing, but never unkindly or with a reprimand. He has reasonably asked that a oblivious parent ensure their toddler not grab and possibly break his expensive instruments and/or injure him/herself. The fact that he does this at all seems to have thrown off some reviewers, but it's important to realize that his requests regard safety and providing as enjoyable and enriching experience for kids as possible. When he asks parents to participate in the music or to refrain from texting, it's about modeling engagement for the kids rather than his own performer vanity. He's trying to make it a better experience for your kids and my kid, and isn't so concerned that he might appear "grouchy" while doing so. I have a lot of respect for that. read more

When I'm 64 and remembering my kids' childhood, Breakfast with Enzo will be one of my best memories. They love dancing to his songs and they love him. It's so nice to have an alternative to the inane "wheels on the bus" repertoire of most children's singers. I have taken my 2 young children to Enzo's show more than 50 times over the past few years. And we all LOVE him! He is an incredibly talented musician, he is interactive, he plays unique instruments, he takes audience requests and he loves what he does. His show is very reasonably priced and you can stay for two hours. I am surprised by some negative remarks on Yelp. Enzo has to set rules, not all parents are as respectful as they should be and he has a right to ask them to be quiet so others can hear the music. Also, he does have to ask the kids to stay away from the equipment, it's called electricity and it can hurt your kid. Besides, all music teachers set rules, we've been to Blue Bears and Music Together and they set rules too. My children ask to go back all the time and it's something we look forward to. Why my daughter loves Breakfast with Enzo - Enzo is relaxed, mellow, engages the kids, enjoys the music, and puts on a great show. The music is terrific and includes many original songs - and Enzo puts new spins on old classics. He also plays a wide range of instruments, which engages the kids' curiosity. Why I love Breakfast with Enzo - Including the reasons above, this is a low-key, inexpensive way to entertain kids on foggy SF mornings - and greatly enhances my toddler's appreciation of music. Enzo is at the Bernal Neighborhood Center nearly every Saturday from 10a - noon; I get to relax and listen to fun, diverse, non-cheesy music, while daughter gets a little workout singing and dancing and ends up tuckered out just in time for nap. About the low-star reviews here - While a little light banter is never an issue, having a cluster of parents carrying on a full-on conversation during a live kids' music show is a huge distraction/bummer. And it sets a rotten example for the kids about respecting the performance. Enzo's right to call people out on it. If you want to catch up with your neighbors, go to coffee after. I've never heard Enzo be anything but gentle with kids when they get too close to his instruments, but in a room full of toddlers it can get chaotic, and he has to have clear boundaries to protect the kids (cords and electricity) and the instruments. Again, assuming you are engaged, it's not going to be an issue. Finally, Enzo has a dry sense of humor. He takes a stand for the kids having their own experience, and he's not shy about commenting on parents' trying to steer their kids a certain way or do it for them. For example, he might say, "Don't operate your kids" to parents who are clapping their kids' hands for them or some such. He's a character. He's a performer. His style is unique. Both my boys, two and five, are big fans of Enzo! Due to our schedule we do not get to go every week but we always enjoy his live music. Different people have different opinions about music shows and music classes in the city, so this is my own opinion about this show. As a musician myself I appreciate that he uses several different instruments in one session and every time the song selection is different. I also like that it is a drop-in show and we can stay for the second session for no further fee if we want (we always go to Sports Basement Presidio location). Enzo mixes standard kids songs and his own fun songs in his shows. He offers kids and care takers bells, shakers and scarves there and encourages grownups to participate. In my eyes he is always friendly to kids. But he is a musician and not a music teacher, so if you are expecting him to act like one you may not like his shows. My wife, 2.5 year son and I really enjoy Enzo's show. Sorry to hear a few people didn't enjoy, but at each show I have been to the group really was having fun. I've been to "Breakfast with Enzo" almost every week since 2010. It's great to have a music class that all age children like to go, interact, learn, listen and sing. Friday is a very special day for all the children I've been taking care of. The children were always very excited to tell the parents the time they run up and shake Enzo's hand at the beginning and end of the show. Enzo always call the children's name and seems to care about each one. I just received an email from a family that I worked in the past and are living in Pensylvania now... The parents said the little girl is missing SF, me and Enzo =) A couple times I have to move from a family to another and Enzo always offered me help to find work. He posted a note on his webpage and I got a family with his help. I can not say anything "bad" about Enzo and/or his performance. My experience is always great and I really enjoy participating wen I can! Recently Enzo performed at our preschool. He did 3 back to back performances for children 18 months to 3 years and 3 to 6 years. The staff and children were extremely impressed with Enzo's performance! Everyone had huge ear to ear smiles all day. Enzo is great at regulating a large crowd of children, encouraging them to get up and dance then quickly can captivate them to sit down and listen. As a school it can be difficult to find a performer who is educational, high quality, and fun for younger children and Enzo hit all the marks! We'll definitely be scheduling him again in the future! read more
