Fishing was slow but they worked hard to find some fish. They were also very attentive to the passengers.

Deep Sea fishing with Breakaway in Kauai was so fun! My family each caught a Skip Jack Tuna and then one of us caught a Mahi-Mahi!! It was delicious!! I just paid the observer fee and was the official photographer. (I recommend a sealed camera case around your neck). We launched out of Nawilliwilli Harbor. It was just our family and another couple on the small boat. I think there were about 8 rods in the water. John and Joe were the very chill captain and crew. We also saw a whale jump out of the water! Beautiful day! Highly recommended for those who want a relaxing, chill, fishing experience - not a touristy event. These guys were mellow and experienced fishermen. Not talkative but helpful- which I appreciated. Be aware that the sea was very rough. If you get sea sick, this isn't for you! The other couple on board spent the whole time upchucking overboard. We love the sea, so it was perfect for us. Our teens loved it because they love outdoor adventures. But young kids and feint of heart might want to pass. We were on rough water for 4 hours! read more

We thoroughly enjoyed our day with Capt. Jeff and his awesome deckhand Joe. We had six family members, four men and two boys 11yrs and 5yrs. We chartered a four hour day 10:30 to 2:30. We launched about thirty minutes late due to unavoidable circumstances. Jeff was great communicating with an early morning heads up text about the delay. We were quite lucky with weather and sea conditions. We had sunshine and about a three foot swell. We trolled for about three hours with no luck, the boys were napping. Joe was constantly on the fly-bridge searching for birds or any other indicators. Capt. Jeff kept hunting. At 15 to 20 miles out we tied into a school of skipjack and it was on!!! The first rod hit, then within 30 seconds we had five fish on. The Captain expertly handled the boat while Joe was coaching and gaffing. In about 10 minutes we had five 30lb to 35lb fish on the deck. Capt. Jeff spun a 180° u-turn and took us through the school again. Another 10-15 minutes and 5 or 6 more fish on the deck. We were having so much fun he did it a third time. We came home with 16 nice fish in the hold. Also, they sent us home with about 15 lbs. of fillets. I also need to thank Jeff a Joe for their friendliness, their sharing of fishing knowledge and local information, but mostly for how well they treated the boys. After being stood up for a long awaited fishing trip, we asked a neighboring boat for the captains phone number. We called the captain and he acted like he didn't know we reserved two spots month ago on his boat. Captain asked if we could reschedule the following day. We agreed and went the next day. When we finally made it on the water the trip somehow turned into a whale watching trip. No fish were caught. The captain told us he was going to one more spot. That spot was back to the harbor 1 1/2 hours early. All of the other fishing boats were loaded with fish and happy anglers, not us! I would not recommend this charter, there are others with experienced crews that will find fish. Shame on Breakaway for being lazy and not dependable. Boo! read more

A great experience overall. Guides were a bit quiet, but it was nice, in my opinion, just being out on the water with some music. We didn't have any bites for the first couple of hours, but I know you can't control it. Once we got into some fish, it was a lot more fun, only 3 in total. But that meant all the groups were able to real one in. When it was my turn and I was hooked up with a really nice yellow fin they just directed me and told me what to do, when to real, etc. But did not take over the real, which hurt physically but it gave alot more to the experience. Letting us come up and get as much as we'd like which is awesome. Would recommend if you want a chill relaxing fishing trip where lots of fish aren't guaranteed but you're on the water so who cares! read more

Not a great experience for our family. We brought an 8 and 11 year old with us. Woke up at 4:30am to meet captain Jeff. We were on time - Captain and boat were not on time. We then had to wait for captain to place boat in water and get prepared for takeoff. No friendly introduction. We finally take off and spent the next hour and a half in extremely choppy water - kids were green and feeling ill. Captain Jeff may have said 8 words to us. We had no idea what type of fish we were even attempting to catch and asked the captain only to be told, whatever type of fish gets hooked. We finally got to the fishing spot and as soon as we got there the captain said - want to head back? We gave up. Headed back. No fish. No bites. No one held a rod. My family went out with Breakaway yesterday didn't even get a bite - 4 hours on the water. We didn't see any other fishing boats for miles - not sure this location is good for fishing. The Captain and mate on the boat didn't talk with us much, we waited at the boat for their lunch to be delivered, then they were busy eating their lunch during part of our trip and one of them took a nap rather than looking for a good area to fish. Called the owner asking if we could be charged at spectator rate rather than fishing rate because we never touched a pole - no change to our charges no discount offer to go out another day - nothing. read more

Nice work Jeff! Was visiting the island with my wife and decided to try a little deep sea fishing, for the first time. Jeff helped make this experience a memorable one! There were 6 of us "fishing", with Jeff acting as both the captain and crew. He got us out to sea, got all of the gear rigged up without losing anyone and we managed to find a couple of Yellowfin Tuna along the way. Both my wife and I enjoyed our time on the boat, even if the ocean was a little rocky. The cost was minimal and the day was beautiful, so it all worked out for the best. Sadly we had terrible experience with Breakaway - my son went out with them as an local experienced ocean fisherman. He went with them as his regular boats and friends were full and they were only ones with room - no wonder. First the captain and crew were 45 minutes late. They did land on ahi and my son hooked and reeled a large one in over 1.5 hours. After return to dock, the captain refused to give him any of the catch - at all. Even tho he lives on island, has plenty of freezer space and appreciates the catch to share with ohana - he was told that's not how it happens - which is bs as you know legally the Captain retains all claim on any catch, however it's more than customary to share the catch with the person who reeled it in, especially Kama'aina who can process and use their portion. He confirmed that with the Captain before launch and their website even highlights that. He was ignored once he landed the fish on the boat and then told to call the fish market the next day - he called for three days and no one ever returned the call. Sadly we read that seems to be this operations standing op. At the least it taught our son to read the reviews! From what I gather locally is that this outfit takes visitors out as a way to pay for the fuel of their actual business which is commercial fishing. Once the cc has been charged, guests are by-catch and generally ignored. read more

Jeff and Keith are awesome! Jeff called us the night before to make sure the directions we had were good and then gave us better directions. He told us to call him in the morning if we had trouble finding the dock, which we did, and he navigated us to the correct spot. I have never been on the ocean before and was a little nervous but Jeff and Keith were detailed in their instruction, always there to help, and they were also fun and really easy to talk to. I would go back to Kauai JUST to go fishing with them again! It was my favorite activity during our two week stay. My husband also enjoyed himself and we each caught two Tuna. We may have caught more but the dolphins showed up to compete with us. Even though the dolphins "ruined" further catching, it was fun to see them doing flips around the boat. read more

Local guys who fish everyday. They have a 32 foot boat, very sea worthy, and good rods and tackle. Some sodas, waters and a couple of beers are provided. They basically do it all, put the lines in the water, gaff the fish, etc. All you have to do is climb into the fighting chair and reel it in. Two of us went and there were four other people on the charter. Plenty of room for all (6 customers, the captain and the first mate). Went on a morning charter (6 am) and fished from the moment we cleared the harbor until we got back. Caught two 25 lb Ono's. Since I was going to be on the island for another 10 days I ended up with a half of fish! Nothing better than fresh fish....... I would use these guys again. read more

Booked thru my resort a month before my vacation. Showed up at the dock at 5:30. Captain showed up towing his boat a few minutes later. The parking lot was partially flooded but we figured it had rained overnight. The captain was friendly and professional. No mate, which I figured was to cut costs. After we were underway as the sun came up we saw the water was muddy and full of debris. Only then did they tell us there was a tsunami from an underwater volcano erupting near Tonga. Of course the fish weren't biting so we drove around for 4 hours without a single nibble. Look, I know there are never guarantees that you will catch fish, but they knew there had been a tsunami and they should have canceled or given us the option to go another day. He seemed like a good guy otherwise, but this was kind of not cool. Then I had to look online when we were coming in to see what the custom is for tipping the owner. I guess you always tip the mate, but opinions are split about tipping the owner. He didn't do much since there were no fish, so I dropped the guy10%. I guess I'd use them again. read more

Worst experience on Kauai ever. My son and I just spent 4 hours on an extremely uncomfortable boat trip, chasing around dragging 7 lines with lures. 6 passengers on the boat. We caught no fish, no passengers even touched the rods. Huge disappointment. Booked the trip through the hotel, and did not speak to the company myself. I've been on several boats before, never on Kauai, and never experienced anything like this. If you're thinking of using this company, call them up yourself, ask them what their plan is for the trip. read more

We were skeptical from all the reviews but we decided to just go since we paid already. The ONLY bad thing was the sea sickness! The captain was straight forward and honest right from the beginning. He let us know the water was choppy and he gave us a way out before we got on the water. We decided to take anti nausea and continue. We fished for bait fish, which we caught RIGHT AWAY! Some of us fished while others tried to avoid vomiting (although 3/6 did). Then we used the fish we caught to fish for trolling. We caught 3 fish! One 40 lb, and two 10lb! We decided to head back after because my sister was not feeling well. These guys are excellent fishermen. They knew what they were doing and they were professional and helpful. The motion sickness was not related to the captain, i mean he warned us that it was gonna he like that. We've been on a few different fishing charters and (minus the vomiting and sea sickness) was much better! If it weren't for the motion sickness it would have been the perfect fishing trip! read more

Made an account just to give this a review. Let's start with the big one - you KEEP the fish. Not like other charters on island. Capt Jeff was phenomenal, friendly, and extremely experienced. We even had serious scheduling issues (on my side) and he was able to keep working with us to reschedule. He's got a smaller boat that cuts through the waves much easier than the other big ones and has been doing it for 30+ years now. I can't recommend Breakaway enough. I had some time on the islands! I scheduled with BreakAway about 5 days before departure! The night before, Jeff contacted ME. A repair on his craft took longer than daylight available. Things happen & BreakAway considers SAFETY FIRST!!! They have their priorities straight! I was delighted with his call & sense of responsibility! HE TOOK THE INITIATIVE TO LET THE CUSTOMERS KNOW BEFORE SHOWING UP AT 6 am! This goes a long way in my book! Being a military man, communication & responsibility are tops! Went out today! Great catch! JEFF PUT US ON THE SPOT! Don't let me second rate, deck hand, Keith! Keith piloted half the time while catching. Both worked well together attending all our safety, lines & reels. SAFETY WAS ALWAYS ON TOP! A great catch for all on board! Plenty to take home. Made my own poke & tuna steaks. I would go out with this crew anytime! BE AWARE! These fishing tours FILL UP at least a 2 weeks before they leave the dock. I am here 2 weeks & had I not called early, I would not have been allowed due to space availability. First time fishing in the ocean , and could not have asked for a better captain and first mate. We had our 3 children ages 17,13,and 10 with us. They made sure our kids were well taken care of the entire time . Very helpful in every way. Went out @ 6 am and caught 4 fish during the 4hr charter. The price is very fair considering all these guys do . Just show up and fish . Everything else is done for u. Even Got to take some fish home. Will definitely be back to fish with this crew . I found Breakaway when my charter fell through. Another captain I had called was full but recommended Jeff highly. I spoke to Jeff and althoough it was a shared charter and a full one (5 anglers) on only a half day (4 hrs) I decided that I wanted to gamble and fish anyway. I have fished charters from Alaska to Mexico and on Oahu, I know I'm not a pro but I know what I am doing and what to expect. This is a smaller boat but its a good one and they stow their equipment carefully. Jeff and Keith have worked together for a long time and it shows. Their job is to make sure you get fish, if you are after a specific species then better be prepared to assume the risk that that particular fish may not jump on your hook. These guys are professional and they have a job to do, so don't expect much small talk. They aren't rude, just focused. Typical for Hawaii you set you lines as soon as you leave the harbor and make your way out. Nothing bit on troll but once we hit the ledge they re-rigged and we put 3 skipjack on the decks. A few were cut for bait and then they rigged us for tuna, we pulled in 4 plus another skipjack. None of the fish were huge but even a 30lb tuna fights HARD. My only issue was that I was fishing a light rig and had hooked a pretty good sized skipjack, instead of gaffing the fish, Keith tried to lift it by the light line. It snapped the line as soon as it cleared the water. When I brought in my next fish, tuna, he tried the same, I thought about asking for the gaff but the line was 65lb and should have held. Snap, gone. My last fish of the day was a tuna and Jeff jumped in with the gaff before I had a chance to ask. He took a while to gaff it and I had to turn the fish twice along side the boat, but we got it. Frsh grilled tuna, yum. Take it how you will and make your fishing choice. No crew is perfect and these guys made mistakes, but these guys definitely put us on fish. In all honesty I would use them again but not as my first choice, and I WILL ask for a gaff next time. read more

Amazing crew as well the best deep sea fishing I have ever experienced. I went out today with my parents for a private afternoon guide. We were able to land a 160+ pound yellowfin and it was truly the best experience. The two brothers are extremely nice and want your fishing trip to be successful and enjoyable. Just know that fishing is called fishing for a reason. Not catching. So after 3 hours of waiting it truly paid off. 5 stars all around for the wonderful trip this afternoon. We caught a bunch of Ahi and Aho and other boats were not doing as well - nice gear on-board and well worth going. This company took me on last minute after my initial trip with another company was cancelled due to other chartered guests cancelled. Jeff and crew were very accommodating, and they were clearyly experienced, yet very courteous, answering all my fishing questions. When Keith (I think that was the crew member's name) told Jeff that a big Tuna was surfacing, and Jeff grabbed my reeled in bait and tossed it on top of the water to get a bite, that was something I've never seen, nor knew could be done. I have been on boats in around Kauai several times and the waves have always been fairly normal. I booked a fishing charter with Breakaway Charters for my 6 year old son and me during July 2012. My son and I along with 4 others boarded the boat and started heading out to sea through the harbor. When we came to about a quarter mile of the seawall, the captain told all of us to get under the cabin. We went the past the seawall and the ocean was rocking and rolling. It looked like the movie "The Perfect Storm". Within 15 minutes, 3 of the passengers were seasick, including my son, who wanted to go home. I am no sailor, but I looked at the waves and they looked like 14 foot swells. I asked the captain how big the swells were and he said 4 feet. I didn't reply, but after 15 minutes the guy behind whispered, "those look bigger than 4 feet". The captain was awesome though, he directed the boat through those giant waves until we got to the fishing spot and dropped anchor. I have never been seasick in my life, but the up and down action of the stationary boat almost got me. We all rotated on one rod catching fish, except my son who couldn't lift his head. We caught a skipjack tuna, cut it up, put it on the hook, and then used some for chum, and we all took turns catching yellowfin tuna. Heading back, the captain sort of surfed the waves back to harbor. In the harbor, the captain cleaned some tuna and let everyone take some home. I talked to the captain afterwards and he said the ocean had been choppy all year. Next time, I will try to get an idea of the wave conditions before bringing a young child on a fishing charter. read more
