It took a while for Breadtop to reach Brisbane but judging from the number of these Asian style bakeries popping up everywhere, it looks like it's here to stay.
Hats off to the business owners of Breadtop Garden City, I honestly didn't think the Mt Gravatt demographic would suit the franchise. I wondered why they didn't open up at Sunnybank first (there is indeed now a Breadtop at Sunnybank).
The Garden City Upper Level Breadtop was popular from day one. Their product range combine some extreme Asian sweet breads (salmon floss bun anyone?) with some western/ European style fruit tarts and gateaux. They're really smart about catering for everyone. They have now expanded to a lower level Bread Top with a smaller selection but still just as good.
Even though their birthday cakes in the window look lovely, I draw the line at their cream puppy cake. How could anyone take a knife to it? Look at its adorable eyes. The strange thing is, every time I go to Breadtop, the puppy cakes are still in the window but I don't know if it's the same stock or it's been turned over. Are they being constantly purchased by someone with a puppy vendetta? Are they just realistic samples like those plastic sushis you see at Japanese restaurants? How long can a cream cake last otherwise?
With this hanging over my head, I always eat at Breadtop with a slight feeling of unease. read more
