It's true. There is…read morenothing in the world quite like a kugelhopf. I expected it to be like a bundt cake, dense and juicy. Rather, it was a contrasting experience from beginning to the end. The outside was crispy, almost flaky while the inside was soft and sort of stretchy, like it almost wanted to be a croissant. The rum raisins and nuts were a surprise but the best part was the syrup on the bottom of the kugelhopf, which gave it even more juiciness just when you thought it was getting a little dry. We ate this every day of varying sizes while we stayed in Paris. We had the individual size, which my hubz liked the best, and we got the mid ranged one, which I liked the best because I tend to like salty things while my hubz likes his food sweet. The bigger it is, the less sweet it is, since there is more of the saltier stretchy inside. LOVE. The millefeuille (aka a napolean), is also out of this world, with a thick custard center and flaky layers. The baguette is good, the croissant is good, and the financier is so moist and almondy you're going to kick yourself in the behind you didn't get it until the very last day (i did, anyway). I love the kugelhopf so much I made a video about it on my food blog. check it out http://seekingfood.blogspot.com/2011/06/honeymoon-day-1-paris-france.html here is a video of the place in case you would rather watch vs. read: http://www.tripfilms.com/Travel_Video-v78280-Paris-Vandermeersch_Boulangerie_The_Kugelhopf-Video.html

Fair warning, it will be hard to get another baguette after this one. It's just perfect. They ask you how you want it: well done or not and it's always a hit. The place is extremely clean! I appreciate that a lot. Finally: they also sell big loafs of bread you can to be sliced individually, so if you'd like a rustic more country-style bread, you can literally ask for a slice. This is perfect for couples who just want to have a slice of fresh warm bread in the morning for an avocado toast or a simple almond butter toast with honey. The bread is literally OUT-of-this-WORLD. Oh, now, finally: the pastries are just to cry for. I'm not a sweet-type of person, but when you see some of the cakes they have, you just can't help yourself. Their pistachios EVERYTHING are just incredible. Their madeleines too for a quick afternoon tea. Out of control. I can't recommend this place more. It's a staple in our neighborhood. So lucky to have this close-by.

Further, they are absolutely scrumptious! We've had many treats, savory & sweet, and will definitely return for more. Their chocolate croissant is pretty darn good and 1,20€. I could do with a little more chocolate -but they have plenty of other chocolate sensations.

I eat about half of it there on the stand up tables (if they're available.) Ok,,, it's one of those no frills joint that I like so much. You walk in, you bark your order to the cashier. She sets you up with your sandwich and tells you how much it is. You reach in your pocket, you pay her, she give you change and you're out the door. On to the next one. The sandwiches they serve here is pretty good. Salmon, ham, cheese, greens, tomatoes, onions, etc. Those are all pretty much created equal,,, what really makes the difference here is the bread. They make their own bread here,,, yes,,, own bread,,, from scratch. Flour, water, yeast, etc... all that good stuff. All that and a lot of love to create the perfect light and crispy on the outside and mouthwateringly chewy and tasty baguette you've ever put in your basic mouth. Anyways, the simple things are what I love,,, and Le Fournil Du Maine is what I call my regular joint. Thank you so much for making amazing sandwiches,, I'll see you again next time I'm in town.
