I am ALL for family restaurants. This little mom and pop shop is super easy to zoom by when you're on lakeshore but i promise its worth the break pump! I was craving some good old jamaican food and i had heard about bratenahl kitchen since moving to the east side so i stopped in after a long day at work and was pleasantly surprised. I ordered some oxtale and rice, some curry chicken and some beef patties. When i say EVERYTHING hit, it HIT. the spices were perfectly balanced, and this was a huge concern because in my experience some jamaican spots go overkill on the seasoning but bratenahl kitchen hit it on the mark. Food was ready to go, no wait time, no hassle. They have contactless payment and to-go, masks were work, all hygiene and safety protocol was followed from what i could see. THUMBS UP for sure! The oxtale was so good, tender, scrumptious, the rice and peas YUMMM. the beef patty was fresh out of the heater and i wanted another one as soon as i was done. You get a really good portion for the pricing, enough for two meals or to feel two people. Definetly worth the stop!

Bratenahl Kitchen is pretty much just that - a kitchen, behind a bulletproof window, with a table inside and a covered patio outside. Food - amazing. Vibe - shady as f***. What it lacks in hipster appeal, it makes up for with plenty of personality and flavor. I drove up to one of the handful of parking spots located right off the road and had to double check that the "OPEN" sign was lit because it didn't look like anyone was inside the tiny shack, or the decrepit, tinier shack next door. Luckily, the door was unlocked and bells jingled to alert the proprietor/cook of my presence. The menu is succinct, but it was hard not to be distracted by the graffiti covering every surface (even the ceiling), all heartily endorsing the authenticity and tastiness of the food. A good sign. All the items are competitively priced too since the menu price includes tax. (But definitely include tip if you're happy with your meal.) Going with my gut, I projected at the ear behind the plastic that I wanted Shrimp Sautee. He nodded and disappeared into the domain of his kitchen. The place has a smell like spoiled vegetables and unwashed rags, which wasn't the most pleasant to wait in, but I hoped the graffiti wasn't wrong. One of the four chairs around the lone table was my temporary perch. An unseen radio was broadcasting some Winter Olympics event, so at least I didn't have to wait in silence. You may also choose to amuse yourself by reading the various signage, including the answer to the question, "Is there a public bathroom?" on the door to the kitchen (No) and "Am I safe here?" (Yes, potential goonies beware of the owner), and a myriad of religious fixtures. In short order my shrimp came, smelling a hundred times more fragrant than the rest of the dining area. He showed me my order in a takeout box through the window, an exchange of cash was made, and I collected my goods. All the utensils are disposable, so I guess a lot of labor is saved by not having to wash anything but the cookware. Now, the food - DELICIOUS. Like, currently salivating while thinking about it delicious. The shrimp were fluffy and covered in a rich, sweet, and smoky sauce. Fresh black peppercorns added a kick to the meal, and even the rice and beans I couldn't shovel into my mouth fast enough. These portions will definitely keep the munchies away for a few hours. I will be returning to try everything on the menu.

Entrance of restaurant

Though I have enjoyed the food from this restaurant in the past, I don't think that their hours posted are up to date. I've come here on 2 separate occasions in the past year from out of town during their normal business hours and no one has been available to take my order or answer the phone. If you want a more reliable and good Caribbean food experience, then this place will only let you down. I recommend trying some place else.

Wow, what a great place. This is the epitome of a hole in the wall, but the guy running the place is super nice and friendly. Credit card machine wasn't working and he told me where the closest ATM was. It had a $1 fee and he gave me a $1 discount off my food without even asking! There's only one table on the inside. Probably take your food to go if it's cold outside. There's a patio with a decent amount of seating in front of the restaurant. The menu has quite a few options, check out my photos of it. Judging by the tape over the menu, It seems like it changes quite a bit or some items are seasonal (there was a grill on the outside, maybe some taped off items involved that?). I didn't try it but they had sweet potato pie if you have a sweet tooth (wasn't on the main menu). They also had a few Jamaican sodas. The menu has a good variety of dishes and some you won't find anywhere else. From what I've gathered, the food is authentic Jamaican home style cooking. It was delicious, but make sure you're ready for those bones! I got a "small" goat curry and a large braised oxtails to share with my wife. I love goat in general and the goat curry was great. It wasn't as strong as Indian curry, but it was still very flavorful. The braised oxtails were excellent as well. Both were served with a side of cabbage, rice, and beans. I don't know how to explain the cabbage, but I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. I'll be back for sure.

Delicious food but ran into the same issue as others with "the credit card machine is broken"' routine. Curried shrimp was excellent!! My Husband said the oxtails were excellent and we both enjoyed the beef patties!! Close to home so we will go often and take cash if the machine is "broken" again!!

The food was bold and authentic. My experience didn't quite live up to the anticipation. The atmosphere had promise. It had very nice African art on the walls that added to the unique accent of this small eatery. To be very honest, the place did not look extremely polished or clean. Service cold and really unlike typical Caribbean hospitality and vibes. That's also compared to local Afro-Caribbean spots. I came at the end of the day (around 8 PM) and was the only customer so maybe that explains this disappointing level of energy. My options at the end of the day were limited. Quick bites menu was available to build my own plate. The ingredients are not upfront within view so it's hard to tell what you'll get until it arrives. I ordered jerk chicken XL plate with all the possible toppings, and asked for a side of plantains (up-charge). The serving was generous but still a bit pricey for $20. I took my order to go. The dinner plate was too spicy for my liking. The plantains were extremely good, very authentically Caribbean tasting. I loved them. The overall experience just lacked that soul I was looking for. Mostly street parking is available in the area. The eatery is within walking distance of the Cleveland State University campus which is convenient for students and visitors. It's always tough to reflect on a less-than-great experience, especially when I want to root for places like this. I know that restaurants--especially smaller, community-driven ones--have off days. Maybe that's all this was. Still, I walked out bummed.

The food on the other hand was horrid. It tasted like it had been sitting in the warmers for over a week and the smell was foul. When I left I had an extreme stomach ache and felt sick to my stomach. Would not recommend but the one worker needs a raise.

It has a nice outer crunch and is well seasoned but not overwhelming with it. You can see the cracked pepper on the skin. It's juicy and cooked well. I do prefer a more cruncher skin however, but this is preference. Chicken alone is a 9/10. This may be controversial but Cole slaw is FIRE to me lol. I consider myself a slaw connoisseur. I enjoy it with numerous meals and meats. The slaw here is yummy. Nice crunch of cabbage and carrot. Mayo base and the perfect ratio of mayo and cabbage 10/10. Every group has a weak link and that is the fries. They were hard. They are shoestring fries and it can be easy to over cook this style of fry. Next time I will opt for another side option 1/10. The cornbread was ok but flavor wise was different and delicious. When I took a bite of this cornbread, my whole mouth dried. It literally sucked all the moisture from me . However, the flavor is vanilla cake like and just delicious 4/10. I also ordered a beverage called Morir Sonando. This is a Dominican beverage that typically consists of oranges, sugar, milk and ice. A beverage I am a fan of. For those foreign to Morir Sonando, it is very reminiscent of Dairy Queen's orange julius, except way less sweet and less thick. This drink is no short of amazing 10/10. Refreshing. Beef empanadas. Delicious. Get them. Get a side of the sauce 11/10. Lastly, I ordered the tres leches cake (3 milk cake). Perfection at its finest. When you're craving tres leches cake, you want THIS. Upon walking in for pick up, Pica Pollo West was very clean. Which makes my likely hood of returning anywhere higher. The service was average. Nothing worth noting. I will return. I want to try their fish next!

The curry chicken meal came with a few pieces of chicken, cabbage, plantains, and rice & peas. Everything on the plate was delicious. And I'm not typically the biggest fan of cabbage, but I like the way Gar and Mar cooks and seasons theirs. But oh my God, THE BEEF PATTY. Next time I come here, I might just make my meal a bunch of beef patties. The curry chicken was good, but the beef patty was absolutely fantastic. The crust was so buttery and flaky, and the filling so flavorful and well-spiced. The patty was so good that I ordered another one for "dessert," though the patty is very much savory. This unassuming spot is positioned mostly for takeout, with few seats for those who choose to dine in, and offers a limited menu. Offers are made at the counter through a takeout window. I often gauge Caribbean or Jamaican restaurants by how well they prepare their oxtail stews. Unruly's stew had a little more heat than I anticipated ( guessing their recipe actually uses scotchbonnets vs. jalapenos), and it was delicious. The server even added in extra jus into my order ... As if she knew my heart. The portion was generous and reasonably priced. There also were bottles of fun, Jamaican sodas available for purchase. Overall, a good restaurant to satiate cravings.
