We visited the Brasserie Blanc a couple of weeks before Valentine's Day as we knew that it was going to be fully booked on that day. We rang up about four weeks beforehand to make sure that we could get in on the day of our choice but even then we had to take the time that was offered to us rather than select our own time because it gets booked up so quickly.
We had decided to take our 11 year old vegetarian and all round fussy eater with us. I had a feeling this would be a mistake, but we did ask what there was available on the children's menu that was suitable and was told that there was an extensive children's menu with plenty available for her.
We arrived a little early, but there is a nice area to sit it to wait and we were given our menus to peruse. For me there was a mouth watering selection, but before we had left the bar area, there were already grumblings that there were no vegetarian options on the children's menu.
We were promptly seated at one of the upstairs tables which gives a lovely view over the restaurant. Our waitress was struggling a little with the language barrier, and there was some confusion as to what was in one of the children's selection because frustratingly for a vegetarian, our daughter is allergic to cheese as well. I chose the duck, my husband chose a beef dish and it all seemed very reasonably priced although I had expected it to be much more expensive.
Our problems started when my daughter's meal arrived. We had checked that the dish she wanted had no cheese but was just pasta with a tomato sauce with some vegetables in it. There was obviously a misunderstanding though because what arrived was macaroni cheese with a few slices of carrot grated on the top. We explained the problem and good for them, they checked with the chef that he would cook a plain omelette for her and we ordered a bowl of chips. Unfortunately, this arrived with cheese in the middle, by which time the daughter was having a major sulk! Still, my food was delicious and I enjoyed every mouthful. My husband thought his was also very good although he had expected it to come with vegetables or some other accompaniment, but it was served without anything. It would have made sense to make this clear on the menu.
The bowl of chips finally arrived after my husband and I had finished eating which was a little disappointing as it is not nice to have to watch others eating when you are hungry especially for a child.
Overall I would recommend this restaurant - I thought the food was excellent and they did try really hard to get something for my daughter to eat although I think that the fact our waitress struggled to understand us was a problem. If you have children who are fussy eaters, you may have a problem, although the chef was brilliant in agreeing to offer an alternative. read more
