They're constantly under-staffed, so the service can be a little slow, particularly at peak times. It's usually pretty noisy in there, with generic pop music coming over the speakers (particularly odd given the older clientele). The building itself is lovely - one of the oldest in Weston - and it's been turned into a restaurant pretty sympathetically, even if the tables are a little crammed in to make the most of numbers. There are fascinating photos of the history within the wider Weston context over all the walls. It's just a shame that the food verges on the mediocre. They do a reasonably priced set lunch menu, though the dishes are all uninspiring and predictable - and laminated menus are always a bit off-putting. It's definitely worth looking at their specials board, as that's where the more interesting food seems to lurk, though I had a slightly weird combination of apples and scallops which didn't quite work. And it's expensive too - their 'sharing' mezze platter was £18-ish, small and bland. The non-set-menu mains are all in the mid to high teens, which just seems a lot for the kind of food you'd expect in a basic pub. My gran lives in Weston, and this is usually where we go for lunch when I vist because it's the best that I've found - but I would definitely appreciate any other suggestions!

At approximately $368 per night, the hotel was neither the most expensive nor the least expensive option available. One of the reasons we selected it was because a complimentary breakfast was included. Upon arrival, we were surprised to discover that our room had two single beds rather than one larger bed. I immediately contacted the front desk to request a room change but was informed that the hotel was fully booked and no alternative rooms were available. A larger bed would have been preferrable but it wasn't a big deal. The room itself was uncomfortably warm and stuffy the whole time. Although the window could be opened slightly, it provided very little ventilation. There appeared to be an air conditioning unit in the room and an air exchanger above the door so I contacted Reception for instructions on how to operate them. I was surprised to learn that neither unit was functional. I again requested a room change but was told this was not possible. The hotel did offer a fan, which we accepted the next day. Unfortunately, the room never cooled down, even during the night. Both of us experienced restless, uncomfortable sleeps due to the heat. The bedding consisted of duvets in covers, with no separate sheets provided. We eventually removed the duvets and used only the covers but the room remained excessively warm. A few days later, we borrowed a second fan. While the fans helped cool us when we had them pointing as us, they did not lower the room temperature. Adding to the frustration, each fan had a timer that automatically shut it off after a maximum of two hours, requiring us to wake up repeatedly throughout the night to restart them. Between the heat and the fan timers, neither of us slept well during our entire stay. Another issue was the shower. Regardless of the time of day, the water pressure was extremely poor. The staff were friendly. The hotel is in a good spot as it's between the city centre and the Bay (about a 15 minute walk either way). It's in a residential area so there's nothing but housing around.

It's a classic pub, a drink after work pub, but I think that's because a lot of people don't know it's there. It's a great, central location but there's not many other reasons you'd go down that road unless you use it as a cut through or stay at the thistle hotel. They do a solid food menu and a good range of drinks. The decor is classic and I think that's what makes it feel a bit wintery. It's a smidge towards the pricey end of a pubby pub but you get a nice glass of wine instead of a vinegar! There's loads of seating, lots of nice sofas and the creme de la creme is out the back... There's only a ruddy cinema you can hire in the back room. And this isn't just a few seats and a projector it's a lush room with luxury leather, comfy seats with a blanket each and nice decor with film quotes on the wall and sound proofing. You can hire it for sports or films or occasions. It's mega, trust me. Well worth the £70 an hour. And you can add food to that! A great idea for something different to do! There's also a few benches out the back for the smokers and it's overlooked by a really historic building that apparently makes it into all the Bristol tourist books. Tempura prawns: the batter was perfect and not too greasy. I had 7 prawns and 4 of them were huge. Pork Belly: sadly it was a little undercooked and the fat was a bit wobbly - not what you want! Sweet potato pakora: 5 decent sized pakoras. Not much spice but tons of flavour that lasted for ages. Stick a fork in me: I wont be needing to order more! They also have these amazing lights hanging from the ceiling which my little boy was fascinated by. The garlic chicken was nice but more like garlic bread with chicken and some red onions than a pizza. The sweet and spicy one was really nice, delicious tomato base with peppers, onions and slightly tough spicy sausage.
