We arrived early and found ample parking for the off season, in season they run shuttles to remote parking. We have to eat Gluten Free and even though we were told that was not a problem. No one seemed to know or care what that is. Everyone else was served and wife and I sat there until I asked a cast member who told me to have a seat but did nothing to remedy the situation. I was finally able to flag down help who was serving another couple and we were brought vegetarian meals! So much for service! We finally got a side of pork and were able to enjoy the meal. The cast seemed focused on the play but not helping guests. We sat next to a couple at another event who had had similar no service experiences on a different night. Not awful but certainly needs some help and some training. I am usually very generous with the praise especially for food service.

And it's buffet style so the portions were decent. The show was great. Funny with a lot of audience participation. Some of the magic tricks were obvious but others had my group scratching their heads trying to figure out how it was done. And one trick really blew us away. If you go to the show, I'm sure you'll figure out which one I mean. Now the only downside is that I am disabled with a wide powerchair (27 inches) and it wouldn't fit through the stall door of the restroom at the theater. So I had to wait til I got back home to use the restroom. A minor inconvenience but worth noting. All in all a good experience.

The restaurant displays a tribute to its namesake, a decorated Vietnam Veteran. As two disabled veterans traveling with our families, we expected at least basic courtesy. We ended up in second row from the stage. Check-in was a breeze. You go through a metal detector and they scan your tickets either from paper or your phone. They scan the premium tickets first and then allow general admission. The Showboat is highly maintained and looks so gorgeous! Our server at dinner got our table's drink orders and explained the fixed menu. The food was plentiful and delicious. The musicians play during dinner and then there's a break between dinner and dessert to clean up. During the break, you can walk up to the decks and see the lake and landscape. It's so gorgeous but we only stayed on deck for about 15 minutes before heading in since it was just so hot outside even in the shade. The performance was awesome(Greater Tuna) and as far as the size of the place....it seats 80 to 100 I'd guess, which is perfect size. I ended up buying season tickets. So in the future, I'll take others reviews as just that...their opinions. This place was a wonderful visit. I'm from Iowa and have season tickets to ACTORS theater in Ames Iowa and have had Des Moines Playhouse season tickets.
