The team, quality of horse care, and the facility at Pine Knoll Farm are unmatched. As a client who…read moreboards both a show horse and two retired horses, the care for my horses is to a level that everyone hopes for but rarely gets. The team cares for my horses as if they are their own, with excellent communication and true horsemanship. The property has incredible Bluegrass views, extremely spacious and comfortable stalls, carefully maintained grass turnout, and an immaculately manicured indoor arena. I appreciate that Gillian's standard of care for her animals is higher than most and she, Rob, and Octavio run Pine Knoll as a the most welcoming well-oiled machine for both horse and human. I have never felt so comfortable as a horse mom, and my horses have never been as happy as they are here. Anyone is lucky to be able to experience it firsthand.

Fantastic last minute booking they got us in for. My husband and I were on a quick two night trip…read moreto Kentucky to do a little distillery tour, but they are closed for Covid. Driving through all the greenery horse pastures hubby made a comment he wishes he could ride a horse; next thing I did was a quick secret search for horse riding, and DRS came up. I called pretty late at 7:45 at night as we only had two more days, the answering machine said to text the number for guided tours and I did, apologizing for it being so late. The next morning I got a text back while at breakfast that they were able to get us in at 1:00 pm that day. I surprised hubby, we went to hotel changed and headed out on a short drive from Lexington. Entering the grounds i couldn't wait to go on a ride, I haven't been horseback riding since 2012 in the Bahamas. And while this wasn't quite like that experience, it was perfect for what we wanted. It was informal and casual as the ladies brought us right in and gave us the names of our horses. We had 3 other ladies with our small group of 5, plus our guide Britney (spelling?) and her helper I didn't catch his name. Britney's mom helped us to our horses, I had Sun a 17 year old male horse that was gentle and easy. I am truly a beginning rider and the instructions were simple and clear, and Britney reminded us along our trails of things like "lean back going down this hill" etc. They have 100 acres of land and an adjacent 300 for the horses. The scenery was so beautiful and the trails were shaded for the most part which was a nice reprieve from the middle of the day hot sun. The other worker alongside Britney took pictures of us as we rode by so that was a cool bonus. We truly had a great time, about an hour was spent at Deer Run which fit nicely into our schedule. When we find ourselves back in Kentucky DRS will be the first place we contact!

Our two guides that went with us were super friendly, patient, and informative. It's not far out of Lexington and if you plan on being in the area I highly recommend you plan a stop in here. If you're a lover of animals you want to make sure you spend your time and money on places that offer a great experience while taking the best care of their animals. Stepping Stone definitely checks both boxes.

Head trainer and owner, Tanya, is big on building strong foundations and has an excellent reputation for starting young horses or retraining difficult ones. She's also the head coach for Transylvania University's head eventing team, which is based at the farm. There's an indoor plus outdoor arena, a cross country field, and plenty of room in surrounding farmland to hack out or do interval training. Tanya especially, along with the farm and stable managers are big on barn and horse safety - this is the kind of place where you will find no sharp corners or edges, breakaway hooks on every cross tie and rope, everything up to code, well-maintained paddocks and fencing, no dogs allowed, etc. If someone is doing something that's not leading to the optimum safety and protection of their and others horses, they'll be told so. The stalls, wash rack, tack room, and aisle are kept very clean. Quality is valued in every lesson beginner to advanced, and in horse care. Stall-care horses are fed twice per day, with pasture-care horses brought in by staff for daily feedings for a reasonable added fee as needed. 12 stall barn, 5 big pastures, and smaller paddocks for overflow/quarantine horses. They throw good hay in the winter and provide up to 2 scoops per day of high quality Hallway feeds grain for pasture horses, included in the price of board. The unofficial barn farrier & barn vet are top-notch and preferred in their fields by sport horse owners. Plus, the barn cats are AWESOME. They have their own Instagram @catsofthreedayfarm .
