Now the only cinema with an IMAX screen in Sheffield, but be prepared to pay to see a film on this screen. Whilst a Starbucks has just opened in the cinema lobby, unfortunately it does not take the Starbucks loyalty card so just be aware of that before you order. And watch out for parking on Orange Wednesday's or when an event is on at the Arena. If you don't get there early it can be a bit of a nightmare finding a space. Overall, reasonable facilities and fairly comfortable seats for those extra long films.

The screens are large, the sound is spot-on and the seats are on a steep rake - which means it doesn't matter how tall the person in front of you is, you can still get a good view. There's ample legroom, too. Everything else is standard multiplex: long queues, overpriced food and drink and noisy clientele. If you want to see the latest blockbuster in Sheffield then Cineworld is the place to go. If you want to nod sagely as you admire the mise-en-scen of the latest Alain Resnais reprint then try the excellent Showroom independent cinema in town.

Match attended: Sheffield Wednesday 0 Manchester City 1…read more Hillsborough Stadium is an old English football ground, and with that comes a great deal of history, some of it is truly sad and I want to pay tribute to the fans involved here in 1989. Located in the Owlerton area of Sheffield, it's three miles from the city centre. Although some fans might make the mistake of getting off the tram at the Hillsborough stop on the Supertram network, remember not to do this as the nearest stop is infact Leppings Lane, which is the road the stadium is located on - rather confusing given the stadium name is a good 25-30 minute walk from the tram stop of the same name! It is an old stadium so they do have pillars holding the stand up in certain awkward areas which give a restricted view at certain parts. A capacity of 39,732 which is restricted to 34,854 for security reasons surely is too much for Sheffield Wednesday, only Elland Road in the EFL Championship has a larger capacity currently given the security restrictions. I did find this to be one of the worst stadiums I've visited, which for such a large stadium is unacceptable in terms of disabled access and the age of the stadium, regardless of being built in 1899 with many modernisations since then is unacceptable - approaching the stadium from Hillsborough Park there is a large fence which stewards refuse to move as "it's locked and they can't unlock it" until after the game, which would leave a disabled person stranded. In the stadium ground its-self, there is a great number of steps also from this approach and when I asked the steward the best way to get in he merely just pointed, which eventually caused me to be late to the game by around 10 minutes, which was truly frustrating given I had allowed plenty of time to get there, it was such a kerfuffle. The disabled seating area also is pretty bad, the stewards allowed numerous fans to stand all over which would block disabled spaces with the "carer" tickets being forced to stand if they want to watch the game - Hillsborough really is in the dark ages in terms of stuff like that. I'm so glad my team Manchester City got the win as that made an awful stadium experience as a spectator slightly less to my attention but still this stadium needs to be improved in so many areas from disabled access to making transportation clearer and stewards actually show some form of care, rather than sitting back with a lazy attitude "I would tell you to go this way but there are steps so just go around the stadium". The older Brammall Lane, interestingly home to their cross-city rivals Sheffield United is much better on all fronts as a spectator, so I'm glad it is Sheffield United in the Premier League over Sheffield Wednesday but even for a Championship club this ground is well below standards other than on capacity which they still can't fill, the match experience lacked atmosphere with tonnes of empty seats based on a turn-out of just 20,000.

First-Hand Experience: More info about my personal experience at this stadium - I've been here to see Sheffield Wednesday play twice, but more importantly, I come here whenever I am in Sheffield, as a pilgrimage to remember 96 Liverpool fans who died right here in 1989. That's not why it gets a 2-star. But the place is still truly run down. The horrors of the past were not properly learned from because it's never been wholly renovated as it should have been. As such it remains a harrowing reminder... seeing games here is intense and cool... but when nobody's playing, it reminds you of some very painful things. I've been to most UK & US stadiums, due to lifelong obsessions with travel, sport & especially footy (soccer to Americans). Born & raised in England, I followed Oxford United (hometown team) to stadia all over the country at away games, and later Liverpool (fave team) around. Every stadium review - like all my reviews - are from first-hand personal experience, usually from several visits. In 2011, I was on music tour in the UK, and visited most stadiums for fun in my spare time. As recently as Fall 2014, when I was "stuck" in UK for 3 months, I went to hundreds yet again while travelling. I have pictures of me at most, which I'll post later. Also, when back in UK I'll take more pix, and add more stadia! *** return to regular review *** So this stadium, it's really hard to write a review of it as a Liverpool fan, for obvious reasons. But even without that incident, the fact that it was such a dangerous place to watch football means it'll be hard to give it a high rating now based on what it once was. Then you also have to look at the policing, the ambulances and the stewards. And the fact that the stadium was such a death trap. And they just kept putting games there. I'm going to give the FA, the South Yorkshire Police, and so on, a 1/5, but I'll give this stadium a 2/5 just because they've made it all-seater and safe now. But the corners still aren't filled in, and it may be the biggest stadium in England outside the Prem, but it's far from one of the best. It can hold 40k and opened in 1899, but Bramall Lane is a much better stadium on every level. It hosted 4 games in the 66 World Cup, and then three Denmark games in Euro 96.

So when I was setting up my tour, obviously I played Leeds on Monday, Bradford on Tuesday, and…read more.. duh... Sheffield Wednesday. A She-Field is basically a female version of a He-Field, and it's way better in every way than a He-Field. So now you know. Bell Biv Devoe. First-Hand Experience: I'm lucky enough to have seen Sheffield Wednesday live on 6 or 7 occasions, including in the very old days down in Oxford, and of course at their home stadium more recently. Which was very sad for me. This team is a brilliant team that is a giant of the English game. I have to separate them from their stadium which was a death trap and a heartbreaking place for any Liverpool fan. They were formed in 1867 and so are one of the oldest teams in the world. They're currently in the second tier but are a fallen giant, along with Sheffield United, and belong back in the big time as soon as possible. They were originally a cricket club which is kind of boring. The club played only on Wednesdays, hence the name of the team now. They play in boring blue and white. The Arctic Monkeys, Gary Cahill, Paul Carrack, Jarvis Cocker, Michael Palin, Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead and Def Leppard all supposedly support the Owls. Yes they're nicknamed the Owls, how adorable. They have won the Premier League 4 times, in 1903, 1904, 1929 and 1930, so some really amazing pedigree there. They won the League Cup as recently as 1991 when they were still a top team, and they won the FA Cup in 1896, 1907 and 1935, so their trophy cabinet is definitely full and impressive. They've spent 66 seasons in the top division, but not since the year 2000, so hopefully they'll be back soon. The reviews here that are for the stadium need to be moved to the new stadium listing. They once beat Geri Halliwell 12-0. I'd rather join her than beat her. Chris Waddle, Des Walker, Marc Degryse, Paolo Di Canio, David Hirst, were a few of the legends here. Sheridan, Harkes, Wegerle too. Americans before Americans were cool. Just don't ever go and watch them on a Tuesday or a Thursday. It'll end badly.
