Our…read moreoriginal plan was to stay enrolled for about 6 months to focus on math and reading, mostly for my 7 year old because I did not like common core math she was getting at school. We were going to be changing schools and wanted to make sure she was where she needed to be at the new school. After the six months we realized the kids were doing very well and learning at their pace and we decided to stick with it. It was one of the best educational decisions we have made for them. Kumon simply became part of the daily routine in our household, as the kids do packets 7 days a week. They really don't remember life before Kumon so it is just part of their routine. We strongly believe ALL kids can benefit from Kumon. Both subjects helped the kids develop exceptional study habits and they are straight A students in school. Kumon helped with reading skills (grammar, spelling, comprehension and more) and Kumon Math helped them to easily navigate what they were given in school. Beyond the educational portion, it gave them confidence and that is what I am most grateful for. Tina and her staff have always been wonderful to the kids and to us, the parents. She communicates with us on the goals and when kids are struggling with topics. She provides concrete suggestions on how to handle those occasional struggles. If you are even remotely considering Kumon, whatever the reason, I strongly recommend you enroll. Stay with it for at least six months. I really think if you do it for a year or longer you will no doubt see the benefits as we have.

During COVID, we had a smooth transition to online and packet pickup (and even spent some months in another State). And with the extra hours in the day (since there was no where to go), the extra Kumon practice was beneficial for filling in some of the hours with useful learning. An example of key learning was the completion of squares method for determining the vertex of a quadratic equation. Who knew? That method is also the basis of the proof for the discriminant method of solving more complex quadratic equations. This is covered very briefly in Algebra 1 and your student might miss the importance of this without Kumon.

Our 8-year-old was experiencing adjustment difficulties following the move and had some incidents involving aggression. After only two weeks, Susan and Art told us that our 5-year-old was "great," but referred to him as "the other one" while saying that our 8-year-old did not belong there. We found this comparison and the way the situation was communicated to be insensitive and unprofessional. We were also told that they were not equipped to support children who act out or do not fit their daycare's approach. Susan stated that they had not experienced this type of behavior from another child in 10 years. Rather than working with us on a transition plan or discussing possible supports, they made it clear that our son could not remain in the program. Our son had been academically successful in Fremont Unified, but he was struggling emotionally with a major move and needed patience, structure, and constructive communication. We understand that every program has limits regarding the behaviors it can safely manage. However, we were very disappointed by the dismissive way our child and family were treated and by the lack of compassion shown during a difficult transition. After only two weeks of enrollment, we now have to find new childcare for both children. Based on our experience, I would urge parents--especially those whose children may need additional behavioral or emotional support--to ask detailed questions about the program's capabilities and approach before enrolling. They conveyed to us that they had limited training, resources, and ability to support children who need additional help, and that their program is better suited only to children who fit within their narrow approach to childcare.

She was assessed at Huntington and we learned that she was a grade level or more behind on certain subjects. We knew that she needed additional support to get up to speed prior to the start of 6th grade. Mona provided a clear action plan to address my child's needs. We were provided a set number of hours that was an estimation of the time needed for my child to catch up to her grade level. We would meet up with Mona every 4-6 weeks to see the progress our daughter was making. We will see the scores our daughter achieved on different subjects. We would also discuss the focus of the upcoming weeks. The improvement was gradual in the beginning. Once my daughter got used to the process and routine, we saw dramatic improvement in her grades. Even her attitude towards learning has greatly improved! Mona mentioned that confidence on the subject matter is what really contributes to the success of a student. What concerned us more was our 4-year-old's experience. When we arrived 10 to 15 minutes early a few times, we found him just sitting and playing instead of being engaged. In a 30-minute session, losing 10 minutes is significant. Overall, it felt unstructured and not worth the cost. We expected more engagement, attention, and value for the price.
