I've been here a few times and every time I leave in pain, to say the very least. I found a great gentle braider that I've been going to instead for the past year or so but I needed an emergency appointment and just decided to go here again. I voiced that I am tender headed and to be as gentle as she could. My head hurt so bad. Ladies, if your head is genuinely in pain after getting braids that is not a good sign. It can easily lead to traction alopecia and make you lose your hair. It is frustrating because as a customer, professionals should respect your hair health. Braids should PROTECT our hair, not lead to more breakage. If you are tender headed and/or have fine hair, I absolutely would never recommend coming here. After my last experience, I'm never going back. I asked for knotless and my braids are not knotless. Additionally, she used WAY too much gel, and small sections of my hair were left out in some braids and then braided into the braid next to it. read more

So I have been coming to this place for about 3 years now and absolutely love this salon. This is one of the most professional and clean salons I have been to and I am so glad I found this place when I moved to Philly. My stylist is Bintuo and she is very sweet and does a great job with my hair. I've had her do my Box braids, Senegalese twists, Kinky twists, Crochet braids, and Marley twists. She also works with your schedule and is very timely. ( No 10 hour braiding sessions, I just don't have the time or patience for that). I also appreciate her professionalism. She doesn't chat on the phone the entire time or stop braiding in the middle and ask me to pay, or have me hold her messy cheese curl eating child. Yes, I've experienced those things from other salons (craziness) so this place is truly a breath of fresh air. I've recommended 2 friends and my sister and they all loved their hair as well. Braidmasters definitely slayed my hair and I love my jumbo marley twist. I came here a few weeks ago because I knew a couple of people who frequent the shop and I saw that their work was pretty good. Braidmasters definitely lived up to the hype. I'm not sure of the ladies names that did my hair, but one thing for sure, they did not come to play! they came to work, and it showed. I was in and out the shop in less than 2 hours, plus I still have my edges and they won't literally snacthed! They use to do an excellent job which is why I gave them 3 stars instead of the two they deserve but pricing , work and time haven't been consistent. I got my hair done in May after not having braids for a few months same style and length I usually get they charged me $250. I got small butt length knotless which was only $50 more than what I used to pay them so I didn't mind. I recommended my friend who went the following week she got waist length and medium they charged her the same price?! I went back in July for cornrows (2 layers) and they tried charging me $270 which is insane. I ended up getting boho knotless instead of cornrows bc who's paying that for a style that doesn't last as long ? They charged me $300 for shorter and bigger braids and some of my braids had knots. I also was getting my hair done from 8:30-7 which was way too long. If they could keep consistent pricing and not try to add knotted braids to a knotless style I would recommend them to everyone but every time my friends or myself have patronized this business the pricing is NEVER consistent and lately the braids have been mediocre. Ladies take the trip to NY where the braid shops will braid your hair to the ground and get you out in no more than 6 hours for the price of $200 any size they are all over NYC and we'll worth it read more

I asked before sitting down if it could even be done in that amount of time and was told yes when the answer was clearly NO. This is where I get my micros done. The lady who does them is named Bintou. She is really nice and will help you take your braids out, shampoo, condition, and blow dry your hair before starting to braid your hair. With tip, I pay 160-170 with hair included and it lasts forever. I have even gotten it done on Sunday. I usually call to make an appointment with her. It is located in the gas station mini shopping area with the Dunkin Donuts at 52nd and Lancaster above one of the office spaces. The space is shared with Dollface Hair Studio. They really did a great job on my hair. The cleanliness of the shop was okay. The stylist kept taking calls from her child on her cell and there were two gentlemen that came in (not for business) that spoke in their language very loudly. They were obnoxious and annoying. Got my hair braided here 3 yrs ago...wanted the owner to complete my long box braids but she had a client...someone else started my hair and she was completely heavy handed. I have long thin hair...she grabbed every edge before i could say stop...and RIPPED out one braid as she finished to the end! I could have died! Of course she apologized and I should have left or demanded someone else finish my hair..(i was leaving town in the AM)...long story short by day 3 of my trip i had 7 -9 braids from the perimeter of my head (my poor edges) that came out..from the root!! When i came back into town i went straight back and the owner rebraided front of my hair bigger so more pulling...but as to my edges...I havent seen them since!!! Which is horrible. We should not lose hair from any braided style. Needless to say I havent been back. read more

The first my hair was braided and I did not feel pain. I have a big head. My hair was completed in about 4 hours which was great time. Now the downfall is that my braider did not braid my hair pass the length of my natural hair which began to poof out weeks later because I do not have a relaxer. I used human hair because my scalp can no longer tolerate the synthetic hair that is normally used. I was a little upset afterwards because I had to take the braids out in 3 weeks time which was almost like a waste of money. read more

I went to this shop today because the reviews were good, barely anything bad to say. I guess my first mistake was going on a Sunday with only one stylist available. I arrived and nobody was there. (She Arrived soon after) I showed her a perfect picture of what I wanted done and she gave me a priced based on the length. I wanted box braids with some color on the top with tip of my pants length. Now anybody that knows hair knows BOX BRAIDS are distinct because of the parts. Man when i got home and realized she screwed up the easiest part i was livid. My parts were not in boxes but instead where however she decided to part at the moment. One side was considerably bigger than the other and she did not even put it in the style i showed her on the picture. I am very unsatisfied and feel misled by these other reviews. Where do I begin. 1) I sit in the chair, the hairdresser starts attacking my hair with a comb. The cringe on my face must have been noticeable, she stops and with attitude says, "What?! Your hair is tough! I can't comb through it. You want to do it?" Really? Am I being insulted. I have learned to love my hair, I don't appreciate being insulted and having it ripped out. I actually had to comb my hair out (again, mind you it was combed at home) 2) The hairdresser then begins to braid slower than I EVER had somebody braid my hair. 3) Only 1 other customer on a Saturday morning in the Summer! That should have been my first warning. 4) The hairdresser rarely used a comb throughout the whole braiding process so I KNOW when I take the braids out I will be dealing with a knotted mess because she couldn't take the time to care for my hair. 5) No healthy or natural products were used, just straight horrible gel that will just break my hair off and cause damage and dandruff. 6) I asked her to use more of my own natural hair in the twists. Her reply, it won't look as nice. I don't care how "nice" a temporary hair style is, I still want to have hair left over. 7) It took 6.5 hours for large Senegalese twists. I actually had to tell her to speed it up. When I did that, then the other two hair dressers who were EATING decided to help. Conclusion: Too slow, overpriced, lack of education or consideration for the health of my hair. I would not recommend. read more

For my first time getting professional twists, this was a very pleasant experience, I got long Senegalese twists and the price was very reasonable. Bintuo did a great job, the twists were tight but not to the point where I had to take a pain-reliever. The shop was clean, quiet, and she didn't take any breaks. Also, I was a walk-in and Bintuo literally came from home when I called the number on the storefront. The whole process took 5 hours, which was amazing considering she was the only one working on my hair. I got medium box braids and Bintu and another lady worked on my hair the whole time. She was very professional and started on time. This salon will be receiving a letter from my lawyer in the coming days. After specifically asking for my braids not to be too heavy or tight, the front edges of my hair were braided so tight that hair was pulled clean out of my scalp from the root! During my session, I told the stylist about my complaints, and she told me to come back. I was going out of town that same evening and could not simply return. When I called to speak to the owner about this, 9 days later, she became extremely rude and after some debate hung up the phone on me. During the call, I asked for a partial refund and was told that they don't do refunds and that I should come back to the salon to have it "fixed". The hair from the front of my scalp is already gone. It has been pulled out of my head by the tight and heavy braids that the stylist put in despite me asking for this specifically not to happen. What is there to fix? My hair is already damaged. After she declined to offer me any money back, I decided to contact a lawyer. So far I've learned that this salon and stylists may not even be licensed which is required in the state of Pennsylvania. This alone is subject to $1000 in fines from the state. It would make sense for the owner of this shop to simply offer me a partial refund as I have requested, rather than pursue this through legal channels which will likely end up much more costly for her. read more

Matter-of fact I usually get many compliments on my braids and questions asking where I go. Originally, I was pleased with my hair. My first appointment went well (5 stars). I arrived 15 minutes before my scheduled appointment and was the only client. My box braids were neat and done in record timing. I scheduled an appointment for a touch up and was even flexible with the date to accommodate the braider's availability. I arrived on time again and she had completely forgot about my appointment. I'm not sure how considering I watched her write it down. I was told that I would have to wait 3 hours. Ummm no, that's ridiculous! I rescheduled for the following day. For the third time, I show up on time and there's no one there. This was my second visit to Braid Masters. My first visit was perfect. The shop is open, clean, well-lit and warm. I wasn't put off by the neighborhood because I live in University City just 15 minutes away. Bintou did my Senegalese twists in under five hours with no drama and charged me a fair price. A few months later I scheduled another appointment for more of the same. I really wish I could give a 5-star review because my first time was so great. But this time, I scheduled a 9am appointment to be first in and first out. She courteously called me at 8 to let me know she was going to be running about 2 hours late. I adjusted my day and prepared to be here at 11. She called again at 10 saying she wasn't quite ready and she'd call about 30 minutes before I should come. Eventually I just showed up at 1 and I was quite surprised to see someone else in her chair getting the twists I'd scheduled to get this morning... and I'm still waiting. I came here to get my hair done before s trip. Bintou was nice and courteous and also 30 minutes late to my appointment. I waited outside in my car along with a co worker who was waiting to get in for work. I was the only one there and they made up for time by both of them working on my hair. It made the time go a lot faster. They finished my hair in 5 hours. I got long box braids down my back. Bintou did leave once to get a drink from the dunkin donuts next door but quickly returned and asked if I needed anything from there, which I thought was nice. We did not talk much as they both talked the whole time in their language, which is normal and I was totally okay with that. What I had more of a problem with is her stopping multiple times to answer her phone. She needs and assistant! The shop was really clean compared to some braiding shops that I have been to. Very clean and professional environment. There is a small parking lot so no need to worry about meters, or parking if you drive. And most importantly they do very good work.
